Top 25 ‘Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb’ Amazon Bestsellers In 2009

There is a lot of low-carb “stuff” out there for you to get your hands on and I’m always fascinated to see which ones rise to the top of the heap. Especially with such a wide selection of products available from online retail sites like Amazon.com, wouldn’t it be interesting to see what the bestsellers are among your fellow readers? Well, now you can because today I’m going to share the Top 25 Amazon affiliate sales through my web site in 2009. Not surprisingly, most of them are books by authors I have interviewed on my podcast show, but there were a few surprises here and there. Interestingly, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution did NOT make the list, but I suppose that book has been floating around out there long enough by now.

Here are the Top 25 “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” Amazon bestsellers in 2009:

1.
FAT HEAD DVD
by Tom Naughton

One of the first and most highly-anticipated new low-carb products to be released in 2009 was this documentary from first-time filmmaker Tom Naughton. I interviewed Tom on my podcast in February 2009 where he shared his desire to use his comedic talents to share about low-carb living in a non-threatening format. People who would not read a long dissertation-styled book (see #4!) have expressed their appreciation for the simplicity Tom used explaining the low-carb message in an entertaining and educational manner. This DVD was #1 by a mile!

2.
Body By Science
by Dr. Doug McGuff

One of the year’s biggest surprises is this book from first-time author Dr. Doug McGuff. I interviewed him on my podcast in March 2009 and people connected with his “super-slow” fitness/paleo nutrition message. I had the opportunity to meet Doug in person at a book signing event he had in Greenville, SC and there was a HUGE crowd gathered in that corner at Barnes & Noble who were anxious to hear what this man had to say. This is a truly fantastic book for anyone looking for the connection between proper low-carb nutrition and the right kind of exercise (and it’s not what you think!).

3.
The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle
by Drs. Mike & Mary Dan Eades

Although this book by the Protein Power authors only released in September 2009, it still landed very high in my 2009 bestsellers list. Whenever Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades release a new book, people in the low-carb community are naturally drawn to it. I was privileged to interview them on my podcast the week of the release to discuss the concepts of this new book designed to help people shed the fat around their midsection quickly and safely. If you’re stuck on your low-carb plan and want to shake things up a bit, then perhaps this book could be just what the doctor ordered!

4.
Good Calories, Bad Calories
by Gary Taubes

What more can you say about Gary Taubes and this book of his? Since it released in September 2007, the shock waves have continued to reverberate through the mainstream medical and nutrition establishment to the point that his message cannot be ignored. I caught up with Gary in January 2009 about some of the “war stories” of sharing the carbohydrate-restriction message with doctors, researchers, and people who would otherwise shun any talk of eating more fat and cutting your carbs. Gary’s willingness to put up with such intense scrutiny all for the sake of sharing the truth about livin’ la vida low-carb is one of the reasons I named him to my Top 10 Low-Carb Movers & Shakers of 2009 recently. This book will continue to sell well for many years to come!

5.
Premium MCT Oil
by Ultimate Nutrition

The first of two supplements on the list, I wrote about this product in April 2009 as an aid in weight loss and health. Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) help create ketones in the body and are an effective way to create the necessary energy for your brain and body. I’ve added MCT oil to protein shakes and food in my own personal nutritional plan because taking this stuff straight up is pretty disgusting. But the benefits of getting it into your diet somehow someway are immeasurable!

6.
The Brain Trust Program
by Dr. Larry McCleary

Speaking of MCT oil, it was Dr. Larry McCleary who first told me about it in this 2007 blog interview I conducted with him. I had him as a guest on my podcast in February 2009 to discuss the concepts in his 2007 book. Dr. McCleary is one of the most brilliant minds in the low-carb community and yet he has a unique way of presenting the information in such a way that even us mere mortals can understand. This is definitely a book that should be on the shelf of every low-carber!

7.
Primal Body-Primal Mind
by Nora Gedgaudas

Another new name that has emerged in 2009 within low-carb circles is Nora Gedgaudas. I had the distinct privilege of sharing my podcast interview with her just last month and her book has already landed in the Top 10 bestsellers of the year. Nora has her own radio show and interviewed me in September and I have a feeling we’ll be hearing much more from this primal author in the years to come.

8.
The Stubborn Fat Fix
by Dr. Keith & Valerie Berkowitz

Former Atkins Center For Complementary Medicine professionals Dr. Keith and Valerie Berkowitz have their own practice now in New York City called The Center For Balanced Health. I interviewed nutritionist Valerie in May 2009 about this new book they wrote to help people overcome their inability to lose weight. It’s a book well worth your while to check out if you ever get “stuck” in your low-carb lifestyle.

9.
Carbohydrates Can Kill
by Dr. Robert K. Su

Yet another first-time author is Dr. Robert K. Su who wanted to share his own personal experience using low-carbohydrate nutrition to help himself lose weight for his daughter’s wedding. The result, as we discovered in my April 2009 podcast interview with him, was so much more than that. This low-carb revelation changed Dr. Su’s life forever and now he’s on a one-man mission to tell everyone he can about the powerful life-changing impact of livin’ la vida low-carb. When he tells you why “carbohydrates can kill,” it’s certainly hard to argue with his reasoning.

10.
Genocide
by Dr. James E. Carlson

Another author who is unafraid to tell it like it is in language that cuts to the chase is the unstoppable Dr. James E. Carlson. Brought back to my podcast show in January 2009 as one of the best interview guests of 2008, this man continues to rock the boat with a message that can only be defined as sincere, direct, and 100% correct! He was one of the guest speakers on our annual low-carb cruise this year and will be joining us again in 2010. And as I noted just last week, Dr. Carlson now has his own LIVE weekly television show about healthy low-carb living. I’m looking forward to watching this man continue to blossom and dispel the myths that people have about low-carb.

11.
Living The Low-Carb Life
by Dr. Jonny Bowden

One of the first people I “met” online when I started my blog in April 2005 was none other than Dr. Jonny Bowden. He sent me an autographed copy of this book and I was so enamored by it that I declared in my May 2005 blog review of it that it is “THE must-have book for everybody doing low-carb.” That book has certainly stood the test of time comparing all the various low-carb plans out there with the pros and cons of each. It’s been such a perennial bestseller that Jonny has been given permission to revise and update it into a brand new book coming in January 2010 called Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight Loss. This will essentially be the same book as the original with brand new information that has come out in the years since the original release. Something tells me this book will end up very high in the 2010 Amazon bestsellers.

12.
Trick And Treat
by Dr. Barry Groves

I reviewed this book in November 2008 from British low-carb scholar Dr. Barry Groves. It’s a virtual treatise on all things related to healthy high-fat, low-carb living. Don’t expect Dr. Groves to piddle-paddle around with what he knows is true. He is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the low-carb lifestyle and shows why in this book!

13.
500 Low-Carb Recipes
by Dana Carpender

The all-time bestselling low-carb cookbook is this very first one released by Dana Carpender in 2002. It is still considered one of the most in-depth, diverse, and highly-referenced low-carb recipe resources anywhere which is why it still sells very well. For people desiring variety in their low-carb way of life, Dana’s book has just what you are looking for.

14.
200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes
by Dana Carpender

With back-to-back bestsellers on this list, you can see why Dana Carpender’s books are so popular among low-carb enthusiasts. She joined us on our low-carb cruise in 2009 and is returning again in March 2010.

15.
The Metabolism Miracle
by Diane Kress

Another new name popping up on this bestseller list is registered dietitian Diane Kress. Listen to Part 1 and Part 2 of my October 2009 podcast interview with her about this book that identifies upwards of 48 percent of the overweight population as having a condition she refers to as “Metabolism B” where carbs are not metabolized properly. It’s an interesting concept that implores some elements of carbohydrate-restriction. However, as I shared in my review of this book, there is somewhat of an aversion to fat expressed by Kress in her book as well as the strange notion of adding back carbohydrates to the diet of people with this condition. Overall, though, I think it is a worthwhile book to read and learn from for people who are wanting to expand their nutritional knowledge.

16.
The Slow Burn Fitness Revolution
by Fred Hahn & Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades

We haven’t been told by the so-called fitness “experts” out there the whole truth about exercise and how it relates to weight loss. Television shows like The Biggest Loser glorify hours upon hours of cardiovascular exercise and yet what if producing a toned, muscular body was as simple as just a few days a week of about 15-20 minutes of an intense “slow” lifting technique. That’s what Fred Hahn and this book are all about. In 2008, he released another book for children on healthy low-carb eating and proper exercise entitled Strong Kids, Healthy Kids which I consider “Slow Burn for Kids.” I met Fred in person at the ASBP conference in Charleston, SC earlier this year and am anxious to have him join us as a guest speaker on The 3rd Annual Low-Carb Cruise to the Bahamas in March 2010.

17.
Men’s Health TNT Diet
by Dr. Jeff Volek & Adam Campbell

One of the premier researchers on low-carb diets in America today is Dr. Jeff Volek from The University of Connecticut. This man is putting himself out there releasing some of the most cutting-edge research on cutting carbs you’ll find anywhere. He teamed up with his Men’s Health buddy Adam Campbell in 2007 to pen this book about the proper role of a low-carb diet for men desiring top-notch fitness. The thing I love about Dr. Volek the most is he himself follows the diet that he is studying, so the concepts in his book are both empirical in his study participants as well as anecdotal in his own life.

18.
The Diet Cure
by Julia Ross

Before 2009, I’d never heard of Julia Ross. But somebody told me I needed to read this book and interview her on my podcast. Boy, am I glad I did! As a nutritional psychologist, Julia understands that there’s more to losing weight than just the physical. Using a mind-over-matter technique for defeating carb cravings, this book arms you with ways to enhance your healthy low-carb lifestyle so that it becomes a lifetime commitment.

19.
Carb Wars
by Judy Barnes Baker

Another one of those “Class of 2007″ low-carb books was this one from my friend and fellow blogger Judy Barnes Baker. I did a blog review of this low-carb cookbook in February 2007 and was super-impressed by Judy’s personal story of trying to help her husband eat better without feeling like he was suffering on a diet. The recipes in this book are extraordinary which is why it is still selling years after it released. She has a brand new cookbook set to be released in 2010 that could quite possibly shake up the nutrition establishment. I can’t wait to hear about it when she joins us on the 2010 Low-Carb Cruise as well.

20.
Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
by Nutiva

The second nutritional supplement on this list is by far my favorite fat to use other than butter. The weight and health benefits of coconut oil are undeniable despite the fact that it contains virtually all saturated fat. But despite what people like Dr. Rod Jackson say about it, we are learning from the latest research that saturated fat is not the great enemy we once thought it was. Long live coconut oil and the Nutiva brand is arguably the best there is.

21.
The Great Cholesterol Con
by Dr. Malcolm Kendrick

We’ve all been sold a “con” job on this whole cholesterol business and Dr. Malcolm Kendrick has decided to blow the lid off of it to expose the truth for all the world to see. The dry, witty sense of humor Dr. Kendrick possesses only enhances the message he shares about why cholesterol isn’t what people need to be concerned about regarding heart health. As you’ll learn in this book, there is no evidentiary science that backs up the heart/cholesterol hypothesis. If you are still worried about your cholesterol, then you need to read this book ASAP!

22.
Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb
by Jimmy Moore

Well, well, well…look what we have here. My debut 2005 book release about my 180-pound low-carb weight loss success story landed in the Top 25 list for 2009. I’m looking forward to releasing my second book 21 Life Lessons From Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb in just a couple of weeks and, if it does as well as I expect it to then I’ll revise, update, and expand this book to include more of my personal story along with a boatload of recipes. I’m utterly amazed by this self-published book which has sold in excess of 10,000 copies since it released.

23.
Atkins Diabetes Revolution
by Dr. Mary C. Vernon & Jacqueline Eberstein

When the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins slipped and fell on some ice in New York City and he was taken from us, he was working hard on a brand new book about diabetes. Enter Dr. Mary C. Vernon and registered nurse Jacqueline Eberstein to release this very important book on the principles of low-carb living for diabetics. Eberstein worked directly with Dr. Atkins for three decades and has literally seen thousands of patients following a carbohydrate-restricted lifestyle change over the years. And Dr. Vernon has implored a low-carb strategy for treating her patients with diabetes in Kansas for many years. If you suffer from this terrible disease, then you owe it to yourself to read this book. Incidentally, both of these ladies will be on our cruise in 2010, too.

24.
Nourishing Traditions
by Sally Fallon

It’s hard to believe a book released over a decade ago would STILL sell so well, but that’s exactly what has happened with Sally Fallon‘s book. As the Founder and President of The Weston A. Price Foundation, Sally is working to educate the public about healthy nutrition and this cookbook of hers has stood the test of time. It’s an instant classic and worthy of adding to your collection.

25.
The Cure For Heart Disease
by Dr. Dwight Lundell

And finally, we have this book from cardiologist Dr. Dwight Lundell. In our statin-happy society, it’s so encouraging to hear from a renowned heart specialist that that way we are treating cardiovascular disease is dead wrong and that the answer is so incredibly simple. He rails against the money-hungry pharmaceutical companies who are more interested in their profits than in the health of the patients who take their drugs. It’s an eye-opening read for people who live in fear about their heart health.

Wow, what a comprehensive review. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I’m adding “500 Low-Carb Recipes” to my Christmass list.
