In Episode 549 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we are pleased to welcome Peggy Emch from “The Primal Parent” blog to the show to talk about the great work she is doing in the Paleo/primal/low-carb community. Interestingly, though, when I first contacted Peggy about being a guest friend on my “Low-Carb Conversations” podcast, she immediately contacted me back stating “But I’m not low-carb anymore.” Needless to say, that got my attention and caused me to want to have her come on my “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” to talk about it further. When she agreed and we started talking during this interview, it quickly became apparent that Peggy still indeed eats a low-carb diet along with lots of meats, fats, organ meats, bone broth and more to help keep her health in line from the infertility and other such issues she’s suffered from in the past. She is doing some truly incredible work through her superb blog where she shares with her growing readership how primal low-carb living revolutionized her life forever! Listen in as she and I talk about her journey to optimal health.

Listen to Peggy Emch share how infertility led her to primal low-carb:

  • She has PCOS and decided in 2003 to try the Atkins low-carb diet
  • She was never overweight and was active physically growing up
  • Having undiagnosed Celiac, she had issues with low-carb products
  • When she came across Dr. Loren Cordain’s work, she discovered Paleo
  • In 2005 she began Paleo and got pregnant within months
  • This got her “really, really interested” in traditional nutrition
  • What it is about the Paleo diet that promotes fertility
  • The vegetarian “health” diet she ate during her infertility
  • Soy and whole grain products were a dominant part of her diet
  • She never thought about fat or consciously trying to reduce it
  • Meats, fruits and vegetables were what comprised her Paleo diet
  • The Weston A. Price Foundation that introduced her to real foods
  • She doesn’t do well with carbohydrates and can’t tolerate starches
  • Why some people are able to get away with eating “safe starches”
  • She was “always sick” all the time as a kid on five years of antibiotics
  • Summer 2011 she attempted to raise her carbohydrates with sugar
  • The positive experience that she saw from consuming some glucose
  • She doesn’t eat fruit and foods with fructose (“doesn’t work for my body”)
  • The glucose powder she uses and the limited amount that she needs
  • It’s “not comfortable” when she consumes too much glucose
  • Her “weird eating neuroses” that makes it difficult to make “yummy” things
  • She mixes glucose powder with yogurt and lemonade
  • Her consumption of 0-70g sugar daily that keeps her “low-carb”
  • Whether she has tested her blood sugar using the glucose powder
  • She’s never tested her blood sugar in her life
  • The possible hyperglycemia she gets when she “gets tired”
  • Why she decided to create her “The Primal Parent” blog
  • She was “never into the Internet” before starting her blog
  • Her experimentation on herself and what she feeds her kid is what she blogs
  • Why she’s not into cooking anymore and ate everything raw for a while
  • She got rid of her oven and stove to put her piano in the kitchen
  • What her little girl eats on a regular basis
  • She hasn’t touched sugary, grain-y, carb-y foods in forever
  • Why she doesn’t allow her child to have any of these foods ever
  • How her kid never forgot the taste of a packaged food at 4 years old
  • The difficulty of giving children some junk food vs. none
  • She only buys “treat” food for her kid from the health food store
  • Why she doesn’t make any kind of treats to keep around the house
  • The litmus test she uses when determining what to feed her child
  • “Los Angeles Schools Bite Back at Jamie Oliver’s ‘Food Revolution'”
  • Why she focused on “primal” in her blog name instead of “Paleo”
