      Thanks for having Dr. Braverman, Jimmy.  His book, The Edge Effect, was recommend to me by a trainer but I was also told to ignore his diet advice. However, I’m still concerned about what he says about coconut
      oil and saturated fat for the brain.   He’s obviously changing lives and
      doing good work but it contradicts what my family and I have experienced.  I had been doing a Paleo like diet but with lower fat & legumes for a good 10 months & was feeling better than ever. However, I was enlightened by the science behind Paleo so I removed the legumes & began focusing on adding increasing sat. fats (particularly coconut oil) & felt even better, especially with mental focus and mood (it’s been about 4 months of increased sat. fat intake).  I did the same with my family and it goes for all of us.  I have teenagers and the difference has been very obvious-their moods have significantly improved.  Personally, I had been feeding my family a quality Mediterranean diet for all their lives but they still had health issues.  The changes in them when I added sat fat into their diet (and got rid of the “healthy whole grains”) has me thinking that I had actually been STARVING their brains of proper nutrients.  The are eating close to Paleo but are not 100%.  Anyway, I know where you stand or did before this interview.  I think I’ll send Dr. Braverman a note, for what it’s worth.

        The Edge Effect is where I first heard about him and I pursued this interview for the past three years. I was perplexed about what he said regarding the saturated fats in coconut oil in light of what we have learned about the ketone-producing effects of coconut oil and brain health. There’s plenty of evidence that Dr. B seems to be neglecting IMHO. If you get feedback from him after sending him a note, I’d love to hear about it.

          I sent him a message yesterday.  I hope he responds.  A funny story from something my 17 yo. told me yesterday, (background: it’s his senior yr. and he has a very heavy academic load plus he is a full time athlete so a few times this week, I got him “going” by making him my version of a “mocha” with a shot of coconut nut oil-which I have done here and there in the past minus the coconut oil).  He said, I don’t know what you are doing different with my coffee, but whatever it is, I feel so good and energetic the entire day the days you make it for me!  Not that we should be making our teenagers coffee (it’s an occasional treat), but it is obvious to me that he is experiencing the same benefits as I am with the coconut oil (the coffee goes without saying).  I don’t always get it in his breakfast food because I cook everyone’s together and unfortunately my husband is allergic :( .  I think I might melt some separately and pour it on his regular breakfast of grass-fed beef, pastured bacon, & roasted yams!

      I finally got a chance to listen to this podcast on the way to work. I marvelled at your holding your tongue while Dr. Braverman dissed saturated fat. I also noted that he mentioned the now-thoroughly-discredited research on resveratrol, which indicates to me that once Dr. Braverman came to his original conclusions some years ago, he fell into the diet-guru-wannabe-with-an-MD trap of assuming he knew all the answers and had nothing left to learn. I find that attitude to be very disappointing in an MD, but all too common. He needs to follow the research a little more sceptically — for instance, of the hundreds of studies claiming to prove that saturated fat is somehow bad for you, the only thing they have actually proven (other than a glaring trend of intellectual dishonesty) is that hydrogenated cottonseed oil (aka Crisco) is unhealthy (look up 5TJP sometime; that’s the primary Atkins-bashing rat chow by Purinal Test Diet).

        A person recommended Dr. Braverman’s Edge Effects to me.
        his ideas are quite interesting. & i agree that one should feed the brain the food that makes the chemicals

        but the diet is boring & dry for me.

        The tests in his book showed that i was either deficient in Gaba or (and?) acytocholine. (i forgot)
        but then he advises against liver & egg yolk which have much higher glutamic acid & choline.
        instead one is supposed to get them mostly from (inferior) sources : whole wheat germ/bran/rice bran/soy & chicken & fish)?
        the only fat he approves seems to be olive oil.

          He’s certainly fat-phobic and seems to prefer the Mediterrannean diet overall.

      He seems to have evolved a diet that sticks fairly closely to some traditional views, including pushing vegetable oils, low saturated fat and low salt etc etc.  I didn’t hear anything that singles him out as a brain specialist (compared to Larry McCleary, for example.)  His website seems to focus on selling his product and over medicalising people (he’s very big on hormones, for example).  

      Jimmy your guests seem to split down the middle between the enthusiasts who want to share their information as much as possible and the product pushers, like this guy.  Dr William Davis, Dr John Briffa, Jenny Ruhl, Adele Hite are firmly in the first group.

      I have listened to 99.9% of your podcasts.  Whether I believed the guest’s viewpoint or not, they were all interesting to listen to.  I’m sorry, but Dr. Braverman was painful to listen to and had some disturbing advice.  Some of it didn’t even make sense and was contradictory within the same statement.  I don’t know Dr. Braverman’s age, but I got the sense that he himself could use a good dose of Younger Brain, Sharper Mind.
