The LLVLC Show (Episode 543): Adele Hite Shares A Dirty Little Secret About The Dietary Guidelines

QUEST BARS HAS A BRAND NEW NATURAL LINE:

NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: http://cmp.ly/3

In Episode 543 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we are pleased to have a good friend who I have been privileged to know over the past few years. Her name is Adele Hite (you might recall my 2-part YouTube video of her presentation in May 2010 at a meeting of The Nutrition & Metabolism Society here and here) and she is currently an MPH/RD candidate at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health and the Executive Director of an advocacy group called Healthy Nation Coalition. Adele has had a keen interest in nutrition, health and wellness for the past decade ever since she was trying to figure out how to shed 60 pounds off of her body and improve her health in the process. That’s when she discovered how amazingly powerful low-carb diets can be as a therapeutic measure for people struggling with fixing their own health. She was privileged to work with the great low-carb researcher and practitioner Dr. Eric Westman in his Duke Lifestyle Medicine Clinic in Durham, North Carolina where she was responsible for educating patients on how to implement a low-carb lifestyle change to fix their obesity, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and more. She is now pursuing multiple degrees in nutrition and public health as well as serving on the board of directors as the Executive Director of the Healthy Nation Coalition dedicated to redefining what the definition of “healthy” food in America is. Listen in to today’s episode as she shares a dirty little secret about how the government-recommended Dietary Guidelines are made and why it’s not really based on any relevant science. This one is an eye-opener for sure!

Listen to Adele Hite dish on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines:

  • Her beginning in nutrition as a vegetarian shunning animal foods
  • She ate that way for 16 years as her “weight just kept going up”
  • She was “not a happy person” as her health got worse and worse
  • She “quit dieting,” did some research, and found low-carb
  • Her fortuitous meeting with Dr. Westman
  • Her work with Dr. Westman’s patients educating them on low-carb
  • Continuing her nutritional education to find the low-carb “flaw”
  • There are so many “entrenched interests” that keep low-fat going
  • The 1980 Dietary Guidelines released with science “divided”
  • There was “no evidence” that this diet prevented chronic disease
  • Frustration over “the same [diet] for every patient”
  • The food and drug industries love the Dietary Guidelines
  • We live life assuming as a society that “we’re gonna get sick”
  • Her internship in DC revealed these industries are also “victims”
  • We can make better decisions dealing as individuals on diet
  • My testimony before the USDA in July 2010
  • Robert Post who said “the evidence is just not there” for low-carb
  • She asked about “revisions” in Guidelines based on testimonies
  • Post responded, “no, why would there be” any changes made?
  • The 2005 report showed there was “no requirement for carbohydrate”
  • The fear of dietary saturated fats is what keeps driving this
  • Ignoring low-carb is simply “justifying an addiction”
  • Krauss study found no link between saturated fat and heart disease
  • We are always looking for ways to “justify” keeping carbs in our diet
  • What about all the scientists who “vetted” the science
  • The Dietary Guidelines have never been studied for effectiveness
  • Americans have “followed the Guidelines” pretty faithfully
  • And yet obesity, chronic disease, and more have increased
  • Her interest in how we persist in the face of “inconclusive” evidence
  • We have to “take the gloves off” to make change happen
  • RDs are “intimidated” by American Dietetic Association (ADA)
  • You have to “keep your mouth shut” or face the consequences
  • Patients will lead the charge when they combine their voices
  • How the Ancestral Health Symposium is unifying the communities
  • Why having a policy focus is critical moving forward
  • How a lawsuit against saturated fat prohibition may be needed
  • Getting the diet information out to people without the filters
  • She’s taught that it’s “a matter of course” you’ll get fat and sick
  • How Paleo puts the focus on food quality that improves low-carb
  • The food system is not set up to make healthy foods affordable
  • Why changing the macronutrients properly is step one
  • It’s important to listen to your own body and ignore the experts
  • The close association she found between the Guidelines and ADA
  • How Joanne Slavin made the case for increasing animal protein
  • How this whole section of the report just “disappeared”
  • The “anonymous” group that is really behind the Guidelines
  • She refused to take no for an answer and dug deeper with a FOIA request
  • When she got the names, she saw 7 of 8 panelists were RDs
  • The “indoctrinated” education of RDs who were on this panel
  • You don’t deviate from the USDA Dietary Guidelines or the ADA
  • Who exactly is guaranteeing the Guidelines are based on science
  • Slavin admitted “there is no scientific basis” for the Guidelines
  • Registered dietitians are “selling the Guidelines” to the public
  • The “self-perpetuating circle” that this system creates
  • How the Guidelines brag about “transparency” with the process
  • There should be parameters created for Guidelines based on outcomes
  • The scientists long realize Guidelines aren’t based on science
  • Why a scientist would put themselves in a position to be used
  • What she would like to see happen to the Dietary Guidelines
  • Her “Fix Our Food” project to make food reform happen
  • We are on the cusp of a paradigm shift that is taking place
  • The problem is “the machine” that produces these Guidelines
  • Individuals will need to take the charge in producing change
