In Episode 515 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we’re back again today with two more amazing interviews to share with you promoting the message of healthy low-carb living. First up we have another one of those young, up-and-coming naturopathic physicians out there doing some truly incredible work with her patients and the public named Dr. Lauren Noel. I’ve grown to have a great deal of respect and admiration for the people pursuing naturopathy as a means for treating patients and Dr. Noel is a firm believer in attempting to find non-pharmaceutical answers to her patient’s health woes first rather than prescribing pills on a whim as has unfortunately become the norm. This is certainly the wave of the future in the medical profession and it’s exciting to have so many who are willing to take this non-traditional path to bringing about real change in the lives of many. Dr. Noel even takes her powerful message of nutritional therapy to the airwaves each week through her popular “Dr. Lo. Radio Show” that airs on iTunes. Be inspired and encouraged that there are doctors out there who actually care about fixing chronic health problems rather than covering them up with some risky drug.

Listen to Dr. Lauren Noel share her passion for patients:

  • How she’s always been a “strange bird” about health
  • The bad acne, weight and health problems she had in high school
  • How working in an acupuncture clinic “sparked” her interest
  • The Internet search that led her to discovering naturopathy
  • Working with a naturopathic doctor “confirmed” her decision
  • Why her past health issues gives her “empathy” for patients
  • Her “Dr. Lo Radio Show” inspired by Sean Croxton
  • Why she takes calming herbs before her radio show
  • The digestive issues she dealt with and how she overcame it
  • Why you shouldn’t have any bloating or gas
  • How your poop shouldn’t be a struggle or smell too much
  • How she was “addicted to carbs” growing up
  • Why you need to have a bowel movement every 12-14 hours
  • What “leaky gut” is and why it needs to be fixed
  • The negative role of inflammation in a variety of diseases
  • Her own struggle with leaky gut that “took a while” to restore
  • How she was a “Food Guide Pyramid girl” and then vegetarian
  • What led her to low-carb/Paleo as a nutritional option
  • The danger of becoming too “religious” about their diet
  • What her patients think about her advocacy for proper nutrition
  • What a healthy digestive system should look like
  • Why she recommends people chew their food 31 times to a liquid
  • How restoring gut flora helped her not get strep throat again
  • The gut dysfunction that elderly people deal with
  • What people tend to overlook with gut health
  • A teaspoon of sugar depresses your immune system for 5 hours
  • Why she puts people on the Paleo diet for a month to begin
  • The importance of variety and experimenting with your diet
  • The myth that red meat stays in the gut for a long time
  • Why fatigue is the most common symptom she sees in her patients
  • How she does long-distance consultations with patients
  • She’s joining us on The 5th Annual Low-Carb Cruise

Today’s second interview features a former podcast guest named Jennifer Eloff (listen to my previous interview with her here) who is joined this time around with her husband Ian. They have teamed up for an exciting new community-building book series called Low-Carbing Among Friends. The first book in the series debuted last week and plans are already underway for the second and third book in the series to release in 2012. I’m excited to be a part of this wonderful new project that is deliberately designed as a way to bring the low-carb advocates together to show solidarity with the message to help make a difference in the lives of real people. And the people involved should be some really familiar names to most low-carbers: Maria Emmerich, Kent Altena, Dana Carpender, Dr. John Briffa, Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, Dr. Steve Parker, Dr. Robert Su and MANY MORE! Low-Carbing Among Friends contains lots of delicious low-carb and gluten-free recipes that are a delicious and nutritious way to live this lifestyle. Tune in to hear how this concept was birthed and where they see this series going in the years to come.

Listen to Ian and Jennifer Eloff share their new project:

  • How Ian saw the publishing world changing in the late 90′s
  • The morphing of book selling and the impact of Amazon
  • The “divine inspiration” he had for a team of low-carb authors
  • His analogy of the Jamaican bobsled team with his cookbook
  • Why it is important to do something different and have fun
  • The team of 11 involved, including four medical doctors
  • How this book is dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Robert Atkins
  • The “total disarray” that happened after Dr. Atkins died
  • How we’ve come back stronger than ever now in 2011
  • The loyalty of the low-carb community to promoting the message
  • How the book has already done phenomenally well in pre-sales
  • Why everyone around us lambastes our nutritional choices
  • Why the carbs are the real problem and not fat and protein
  • Why they’ve included “gluten-free” as part of a low-carb book
  • How being allergic to something makes you crave it
  • The catering to the Paleo community with these cookbooks
  • The “low-carb community has matured” by staying cohesive
  • How low-carbing has changed a lot over the years
  • What sets the Low-Carbing Among Friends concept apart
  • The wide variety of recipes available in this book series
  • How the ingredients used in the recipes are commonly found
  • How tricky it is to get ingredients living in South America
  • The 300 recipes available in the nearly 350-page book
  • Who will be a part of the future books in this series
  • The “State Of The Union” of low-carbing coming in the next book
