In Episode 510 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” I’m happy to welcome a naturopathic physician named Dr. Andrew Myers. His brand new book that he wrote with the 1998 Nobel Prize For Medicine recipient Dr. Louis Ignarro is called Health Is Wealth: 10 Power Nutrients That Increase Your Odds of Living to 100. I could tell just by talking to Dr. Myers how much he loves helping his patients overcome their health woes through the use of holistic, natural therapies eschewing the standard treatment of prescription medications. Between today’s two interviews, I share a brief three-minute conversation I had this week with Ann Marie Michaels from the CHEESESLAVE blog who brought to my attention the current plight of an Ontario, Canada-based raw milk farmer named Michael Schmidt who has been on a hunger strike for the past month protesting the Canadian government making it illegal for him to produce and sell raw milk to his customers. Michael’s goal right now is to have a meeting with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty to plead his case and convince the government that raw milk is safe and superior to the pasteurized and homogenized versions of milk sold in stores. Listen in as Ann Marie shares how YOU can get involved by listing 10 Ways to Support Michael Schmidt in his fight for the right for him and his customers to have access to real food like raw milk. We must stand up for real food now lest governments around the world tell us we don’t have a right to choose how to feed ourselves.

Today’s second interview continues with the theme of naturopathy as we speak with a current student of naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University named Mark Woodall from “Naturopathic Health & Fitness.” He wrote to me earlier this year and said he’d love to share with my listeners about what it’s like going through the process of becoming a naturopathic physician. Mark discusses the extensive nutrition-focused education he has been receiving in naturopathic school and how much more thorough it is than conventional medicine. The field of naturopathic medicine is expected to see a huge boom in the coming years–check out what these doctors of the future are being taught and why you should be very pleased to have people like Mark Woodall dedicating their careers to this expanding field of medicine.

Listen to Mark Woodall guide you through naturopathic school:

  • Why he decided to forgo the military to pursue naturopathy
  • The various schools around the U.S. teaching naturopathy
  • What the first two years of of naturopathic medicine is about
  • How this podcast led him down the path to naturopathy
  • The eye-opening experience most naturopathic students have
  • Health issues in his family that “made an impact” on him
  • The horrible nutritional advice personal trainers give clients
  • Why what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for all
  • The six guiding principles that naturopaths follow
  • Why there are powerful natural modalities that don’t cause harm
  • The importance of providing information to patients
  • Why your first visit to a naturopath is typically 1-2 hours
  • What traditional medical doctors have as guiding principles
  • The therapeutic order naturopaths seek to follow (drugs last!)
  • How pharmaceutical drugs have “gone crazy” in recent years
  • How much education he has been given on nutrition so far
  • The strange relationship between naturopaths and the AMA
  • The openness naturopaths have towards Paleo/low-carb therapy

I live right down the street from Bastyr College and thought to look at the college for a new doctor, but this nonsense turned me away.
This is posted at the site for the Bastyr Center for Natural Health website.  http://www.bastyrcenter.org/content/category/3/123/169/
      My Plate? Really?

But I did find a ND who was educated at Bastyr and her website looks like this… http://elliotthealthcare.com/
Big difference and she is great. You should try to get her on the show.

She is listed on your list of Low Carb doctors and on the Paleo Physicians Network too.

Most NDs are quite open to low-carb living…
