NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: http://cmp.ly/3

In Episode 493 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we welcome longtime bodybuilding and nutrition expert Randy Roach to the podcast to discuss his anthology of the history of the bodybuilding movement starting with Muscle, Smoke & Mirrors: Volume I. If you ever had any questions about how bodybuilding got started, what the original bodybuilder diet looked like and how it got altered in a completely different direction in the 1950s, how supplements entered the picture, whether there is any science supporting the idea of bodybuilding, and other such interesting topics, then this nearly 600-page book is one you will definitely want to pick up! Randy is currently working on Volume II which discusses the impact Arnold Schwarzenegger had on the sport, how Gold’s Gym rose to fame, and more. There’s even a Volume III outlined to cover the “biggest medical fraud of the 20th Century” that shifted the American diet (gee, I wonder what that could be), steroids, the world’s food supply, and the future of bodybuilding. We discuss all of these concepts and more in today’s dynamic interview!

Listen to bodybuilding historian Randy Roach share the real story:

  • How nutrition interested him in the 80s as he was losing his eyesight
  • What led him to become legally blind
  • How he got a lot of help from people dealing with his blindness
  • The history of bodybuilding and the nutrition of the early adopters
  • How they called themselves “physical culturalists” in the early days
  • How bodybuilders were aligned with naturopathic physicians
  • Why most ate an Eskimo diet (high-fat, high-protein)
  • The shift happened when the vegetarian movement and cholesterol scare happened
  • Whether there was performance changes when “carb loading” was introduced
  • How metabolic steroids coincided with the high-carb eating trend
  • Why bodybuilders understood the role insulin plays and keeping carbs in check
  • The protein powder industry being borne out of the rise of low-fat diets
  • The renewable financial model of promoting supplements
  • Why soy used to never be in the food supply (considered “industrial waste”)
  • How the articles all shifted to pushing “protein” supplements for moneymaking
  • The need for oversight of the supplement industry
  • Why whey protein was an example of what was considered industrial waste
  • The long, slow, degenerative diseases brought on by eating white bread
  • What he believes is the perfect bodybuilding diet
  • Why it’s important to eat raw food vs. cooked food
  • The cultural impact on bodybuilding of the late Jack LaLanne
  • How optimism and happiness helped Jack LaLanne live a long life
  • What impact Arnold Schwarzenegger had on the sport of bodybuilding
  • When and why the explosion of the gym proliferation happened
  • Why gyms tend to focus mostly on cardio rather than weightlifting
  • The resurgence of HIIT as an effective way to burn body fat
  • Why aerobics are “antithetical” to weight training
  • Why it’s important to find exercise that makes you happy
  • When the super slow lifting trend began and whether it’s gaining prominence
  • The travesty of the move to a low-fat diet as the “prudent diet”
  • The globalization of the modern food supply
  • How he and other bodybuilders got fooled by the proliferation of low-fat diets
  • Why a 10% fat diet just isn’t natural unless you’re a pure vegan
  • How Dr. Atkins got jaded by mainstream thought on calories

Next up we hear from Dr. Frank Barnhill, aka “Dr. Huggiebear,” author of a book entitled Mistaken for ADHD: How you can prevent mislabeling your child as a failure in life in the face of a looming ADHD misdiagnosis crisis. It’s unfortunate that far too many kids with behavioral problems are diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) when there may be improvements made through simple changes in nutrition. This is the passion of Dr. Barnhill who is working diligently to stop the medication madness and helping parents get to the root cause of the behavior issues of their kids who have been told they have ADHD…maybe not. If you or someone you know has a child who has been diagnosed with ADHD, then you need to listen to this podcast!

Listen to Dr. Frank “Huggiebear” Barnhill discuss ADHD:

  • How he wanted to have “a positive impact” on the entire family unit
  • Why he added an ADHD focus to his practice and what it taught him
  • The desperation of parents dealing with behavioral problems of their kids
  • How a patient was misdiagnosed with ADHD and she had bipolar disease
  • The various vulgar labels given to kids on ADHD medication
  • Why kids who are taken off of their ADHD medications get better
  • What motivated him to write his book to avoid mislabeling children
  • Why so many doctors are getting it wrong treating kids for ADHD
  • Why a doctor can’t diagnose ADHD in just one office visit
  • ADHD medications do not fix behavior, but instead the attention span
  • How low blood sugar acts as a “zebra” of ADHD
  • The negative behavioral impact of a child with hypoglycemia
  • How sugar, fast food, and preservatives are impacting behavior issues
  • Controlling carbohydrate intake is critical to preventing ADHD
  • Vitamin D, Vitamin B-12, and thiamine are necessary for controlling behavior
  • The lifelong stigma of having a child with the “label” of ADHD
  • How exercise helps improve the behavioral problems in children
  • Why there is such a quick move by parents and teachers to medications
  • The faster you try to treat ADHD, the more likely you’ll harm the child
  • How nutritional changes can take upwards of a month to show improvements
  • The lack of adequate blood work conducted by physicians on children
  • Whether there are checks and balances on doctors prescribing ADHD medications
  • The network of physicians he’s compiling who treat ADHD properly
  • The $20,000 annual medical expense to treat an ADHD child
  • The millions of children who are being misdiagnosed with ADHD
  • Why his book is a resource to guide what ADHD really looks like

Eliminating sugar, additives, and dyes and restricting grains and starches made all the difference for my son. After a major “Red Bull” event when he was 19, he was finally convinced to make the change and literally saved his life.

Jimmy, I really enjoyed Randy’s interview. It opened my mind on all the supplements and the comparison of Big Pharma with Big Supplement. I lived that era with Randy. Great expose on bodybuilding. It touched home most for me with Jack LaLanne. Jack was an idol of mine and I wept when he died. If you google Jack LaLanne at 71 years of age, he looks great. He looks like Jack LaLanne. Before the low fat craze his recommendations, which you can here on his TV shows on youtube, are all about whole eggs, steak, fat, real food “If man makes it, don’t eat it.” Problem was Jack got sucked into the low fat/no fat dogma like all of us. Towards the end he was eating chicken breast without the skin etc. You know the drill. Then there was the juicing. He believed in it. When you juice, you are eating “man made food”. Just what he preached against early on. Pure sugar. Look how he aged so drastically the last 25 years of his life. He died at about the same age as Julia Child, who never worked out except to raise a wine glass or pick up a chicken she had dropped during her show. She ate high fat and laughed as much as Jack. I miss them both but in my second half of life, I am going to work out less and eat more fat.
