In Episode 492 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we have the privilege of hearing from two medical doctors who truly understand the importance of consuming dietary fat for health. First up we hear from a cardiologist named Dr. Ernest Curtis who has written a fantastic book on the important subject of cholesterol called The Cholesterol Delusion. After watching his patients with coronary heart disease and heart attacks have cholesterol levels all over the map, Dr. Curtis began to question the hypothesis that he had been taught pointing the finger of blame at cholesterol and fat. What he found is there’s a whole lot of nothing in the science supporting this theory and it is now being perpetuated on the public despite this because of the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical drug industry that keeps it going. If you’re frustrated by the constant promotion of drugs for a cholesterol “problem” that may not be an issue at all, then you will be encouraged by this cardiologist who gets it!

Listen to Dr. Ernest Curtis share the truth about fat and cholesterol:

  • How the front cover of his book is his “typical breakfast”
  • His confusion about patient profiles that didn’t match what he learned about cholesterol
  • The “nonexistent” support that he discovered for the cholesterol theory
  • The statin drug industry has become a huge special interest
  • Why we don’t know the long-term side effects of statin drugs
  • How we became “deluded” about cholesterol being harmful
  • Why the truth about cholesterol is seeming to fall on deaf ears
  • The lack of time practicing physicians have to study this more deeply
  • How doctors simply accept what they’ve been told about treating patients
  • How he distressed his office people by denying the pharmaceutical reps
  • What happens when someone has a heart attack or heart disease
  • Why he doesn’t think there’s anything in diet or lifestyle that changes atheroschlerosis
  • What good purpose cholesterol serves in the body
  • Why eggs have such a high cholesterol make-up
  • Why talking about the difference between HDL and LDL is “pointless”
  • The “huge turning point” that happened when Ancel Keys promoted his work
  • Why it “amazes” him that people still cite Keys’ Seven Nations study
  • What he thinks about what Gary Taubes wrote in Good Calories Bad Calories
  • Why he disagrees with the notion that refined carbohydrates are a health issue
  • The lack of evidence that lifestyle has anything connected to health
  • Why he doesn’t think carbohydrates are a culprit in health calamities
  • Whether there’s any difference between diets that are isocaloric with different macronutrients
  • His appendix that helps patients learn how to read a medical report
  • Why the abstract and conclusion should be ignored
  • The importance of the quality of the data used in the research

In today’s second interview, we have a fantastic chat to share with you featuring a physician named Dr. Steven Horvitz from The Institute for Medical Wellness. He’s one of my featured low-carb doctors listed at my List Of Low-Carb Doctors and is doing wonderful work with his patients in Moorestown, New Jersey. And if you love to hang out on Twitter, so does he using the username IMWHorvitz. Listen and love!

Listen to Dr. Steven Horvitz share about his medical practice:

  • How he knew he wanted to be a physician from the “time I could walk”
  • His traditionally-based, holistically-focused medical treatment
  • How he’s been hanging out on Twitter to help people with nutrition
  • His support for a low-carb, “somewhat Paleo” approach to diet
  • How one size fits all only works for one person
  • Who his major influences are in how he treats his patients
  • His exposure to low-carb from one of his patients who was successful on it
  • Why he’s the exception to the rule of educating himself as a physician
  • Why he gave up on taking insurance (sans Medicare) so he can treat patients like he wants
  • The doctor’s obligation to treat high LDL even if it means nothing
  • Why throwing statins at people is just “removing a marker”
  • How the iPad has made it a lot easier for him to be active on Twitter
  • What he does to screen his patients for heart disease (heart scan)
  • His personal experience using a low-carb diet on himself
  • The whey protein shakes he recommends to his patients
  • What his typical low-carb diet looks like

How did you like what you heard from Dr. Ernest Curtis on cholesterol? Do you agree with him that heart disease is mostly genetic tendencies and lifestyle (diet, exercise, etc.) has nothing at all to do with it? What about my conversation with Dr. Steven Horvitz? Tell us what you think in the show notes section of Episode 492. You can pick up a copy of The Cholesterol Delusion by Dr. Curtis and visit DrHorvitz.com for more information on the work of Dr. Horvitz. Coming up next week, we continue the two-for-one interviews on each podcast. On Monday, we’ll hear from Randy Roach, author of Muscle, Smoke & Mirrors and Dr. Frank Barnhill, aka Dr. Huggiebear, who has written a great must-read book on the topic of ADHD called Mistaken for ADHD: How you can prevent mislabeling your child as a failure in life in the face of a looming ADHD misdiagnosis crisis. Then on Thursday, we head to our Scandinavian friends in Sweden and Norway to hear about the LCHF Revolution that’s happening in that part of the world. We’ll hear from a good friend of mine who is a physician in Sweden named Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt from “The Diet Doctor” blog who is leading the LCHF charge there. We’ll also hear from a family doctor named Dr. Sofie Hexeberg, a bestselling author about high-fat, low-carb living in Norway. Her book Healthy on low carb: a new life with proper food (not yet available in English) hit #1 in Norway and spent a total of 42 weeks listed in the Top 15 in general literature. We’ll look forward to hearing from them next week!

Jimmy, you asked Dr. Curtis about the physician’s credo “first do no harm” and how could modern medicine have come this far. You were referring to strong drugs and surgeries. In Western medicine, surgeries have been around since the Roman Empire, at least. Arrogance in doctors is almost a required trait. Here’s an interesting article on the subject of western medicine history. http://naturalhealthperspective.com/tutorials/history.html
