The LLVLC Show (Episode 483): Study Reveals Ketogenic Epilepsy Connection; Dr. Fred Pescatore Still Championing Low-Carb

NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: http://cmp.ly/3

In Episode 483 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we start off with some late-breaking news that happened just last week when a brand new study of mice revealed how the high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet works to control seizures in those people with epilepsy. We’ve already featured podcast interviews in the past few years with people like Dr. Eric Kossoff and Dr. Deborah Snyder on the use of ketogenic diets with epileptic patients. These respected medical professionals have noted that they don’t really know exactly why a high-fat, low-carb diet works to control epilepsy–but that it does work in a certain segment of people with seizures. Now we might be getting closer to an answer to that question thanks to this exciting new breakthrough research.

Detlev Boison from The Legacy Research Institute in Portland, Oregon and his fellow researchers have now identified in mice the molecular mechanism responsible for the antiepileptic effects of the ketogenic diet. It turns out it happens by decreasing the expression of the protein Adk, which is responsible for clearing the natural antiepileptic agent known as adenosine from the brain. This incredible new study was published in the June 23, 2011 issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation. I wrote to the lead investigator requesting an interview and he was more than happy to share more about what they found. The 9-minute interview appears at the beginning of today’s podcast, but you can also hear it in this video I posted to YouTube:

Amazing stuff! Today’s primary interview is with an incredible champion of healthy low-carb living who was another one of those physicians privileged enough to work with the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins in his complementary medicine practice in New York City. His name is Dr. Fred Pescatore and you may remember him as the bestselling author of the low-carb books The Hampton’s Diet and Feed Your Kids Well. But he’s still out there helping his patients find the low-carb answer to their weight and health problems in 2011 (I’ve got him listed on my Low-Carb Doctors blog) and is just as passionate about livin’ la vida low-carb today as he’s ever been! I’ve know Fred for many years, but have never had him on my podcast before–until now. Sit back and enjoy the wisdom from this low-carb doctor who understands the relationship between nutrition and health than most physicians.

Listen to Dr. Fred Pescatore talk about his passion for low-carb nutrition:

  • How Dr. Atkins totally changed his paradigm about treating patients
  • Why nutrition is seemingly so overlooked by medical schools
  • Why it is so difficult for the curriculum to be changed in medical education
  • The difficulty to find good real whole foods today (“know your cow”)
  • How Gary Taubes’ sugar article in The New York Times was missed
  • Why people want the “quick, simple and easy” fix to their weight and health
  • Why the “whole wheat” carbohydrates are even bad for people to consume
  • His warning for people to avoid the gluten-free products
  • His recommendations to lobby our legislators about subsidizing food
  • What he believes regarding “the next step” in improving our food quality
  • How the studies of meat are “biased” by using sick grain-fed animals
  • Why buying food from Whole Foods isn’t necessarily healthy
  • Whether “unnatural” low-carb is okay for people on a budget
  • How we can help lower the costs of clean and healthy foods
  • Why seeing someone eating an ice cream cone is like a cigarette smoker
  • How our poor eating habits are contributing to rising healthcare costs
  • The penalty that people are having to pay for bad eating habits of others
  • Why he vehemently dislikes the CBS-TV comedy Mike & Molly
  • Why there is not a clear message about nutrition in the United States
  • How we have “willpower” to do everything else in our life except our diet
  • Why he thinks about ice cream every single day but resists the urge
  • How “well-meaning” people try to sabotage people on a low-carb diet
  • Why the “cheats” become less and less the longer you eat low-carb
  • The enhancing value of adding macadamia nut oil to your diet
  • How people get “overwhelmed” by all the info about consuming fats
  • Why low-carb is the way we were “meant to eat” all along
  • Why it’s better to eat at home and stay out of the restaurants
  • The carb-consciousness that is happening with more and more people
  • The importance of weight training while engaging in a low-carb diet
  • His 2011 appearance on The Rachel Ray Show about sugar detox
  • Whether we’ll see changes in the food supply in our lifetime
  • If he thinks a President going low-carb would influence the culture

Great, great, great interview….. Did I say what a great interview I thought this was?

Ha ha! Glad you enjoyed it Joe. ;)

    • Greg

This interview made me wonder, as I’ve heard this come up before: do you (or anyone else who wants to chip in) know the specifics as to why saturated fat is supposedly harmless and actually beneficial, but if it’s combined with carbs it’s “a deadly combination” (as described in this interview)? Why isn’t it deadly to combine, say, corn oil and carbs if generally something like corn oil is supposedly less healthy? If you have a link going into this in detail, let me know. And I’ve read GCBC and lots of other stuff but don’t recall how this works. Thanks.

Greg, I would say that the combination of ANY kind of fat with a high amount of carbohydrates is probably not a good idea. Keeping carbs minimized makes the saturated fat you consume benign. This sounds like a fantastic point of discussion for a panel response post on my blog. THANKS for the idea and I’ll get to work on it in my “spare” time. :) Seriously, I will work on it soon. THANKS again!
