NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: http://cmp.ly/3

In Episode 478 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” I welcome my very first evolutionary biologist to the podcast. His name is Michael Rose and he is a professor of biological sciences at the University of California-Irvine. He’s long had an interest in the subject of aging and a concept known as “biological immortality” which is how I found out about Professor Rose’s work after reading this column in December 2010. He’s written a book about this topic called Does Aging Stop? which Professor Rose told me would be good sleep-inducing material until you get to the end when he shares about how hunter-gatherer-styled nutrition helps to bring aging to a halt. He expounds upon these concepts in a really cool blog called “Michael Rose’s 55″ blog. It’s a fascinating concept that I am sure you will enjoy hearing more about from start to finish in today’s episode!

Listen to Michael Rose share about his evolutionary biology work:

  • Why he chose to become an evolutionary biologist
  • The popularity of evolutionary biology outside of the United States
  • His introduction to evolution in a high school biology class
  • What “biological immortality” is and why it is necessary to stop aging
  • Why he doesn’t think environmental forces have an impact on aging
  • How an industrial diet helps speed up the process of aging
  • The aging that is taking place is happening at every physiological level
  • What the #1 reason is why people are aging
  • Whether there is anything we can do to slow or stop the aging process
  • How to hearken back to the hunter-gatherer ancestors the right way
  • What will “kill off people over the age of 40″ in modern society
  • The sugar, grains, grasses and milk that are only recent additions to the diet
  • Two problems he sees with the makeup of the modern diet
  • Why a Twinkie is “pure poison at every age”
  • How grain-based foods are especially harmful for “older humans”
  • Why it takes about a million years to fully adapt to a new food in the diet
  • The reason why we have a high incidence of chronic diseases in middle-age
  • Why he believes you need to hearken backwards to obtain optimal health
  • Rob Patterson’s “55 Theses” project
  • How the 55 explains why people have found success cutting out the carbs
  • Whether there is any evidence that Paleo man ate any high-carb foods
  • The process used to “break down the toxic components” of underground food
  • How people can learn more about how to follow a Paleo-styled lifestyle
  • Whether there have been any clinical trials testing the Rose hypothesis
  • Why young people under the age of 30 should consume an agricultural diet
  • How it all goes downhill for weight and health after the age of 30
  • Evolution works powerfully on the young and then fades out as you age
  • The perfect example of Art DeVany exemplifying his theory
  • Why some people need to switch to a low-carb, high-fat diet earlier in life
  • What is making modern-day man live longer despite a bad diet

Fascinating interview for so many reasons. In particular, the idea that evolution impacts the young most intensely, plus how if you hail from stock that has farmed longer, you can eat a more agrarian-based diet…at least until you can’t (He kept mentioning age 30, which made me then wonder why 30 in particular). I’ve been kind of obsessed with this notion of what I’ve dubbed in my head as “ancestral nutrition” since I read Julia Ross’s “The Diet Cure” and she had an almost-throwaway remark that if you come from Northern coastal stock, such as Scotland/Ireland, your ancestors frequently ate cold-water fish – meaning, you need to do so as well to get the nutrients you’re missing. It got me to thinking about, well, what if your ancestors are from Southern Africa, would they necessarily actually need as many Omegas from cold-water fish as, say, me (my ancestors: Scotland, Ireland & a grandma from Finland) – and what foods would their bodies thrive on? (I think, actually, with his three metabolic “types”, Dr. Mercola is edging in this direction) I’m sure the traditional recipes of the region (a la Sally Fallon’s book) would shed more light on that subject. Also, I loved the much-longer perspective of 4 million years, and the fact that we’ve been cooking for at least 1 million of them (I should note I’ve been in search of a good “sound-bite’y” argument to address the notion put forward by most raw foodies that cavemen didn’t cook so we shouldn’t, and Dr. Rose served me up just what I was lookin’ for). Thankyou so much Jimmy – as usual, you have the most unerring sense of the coolest & most interesting areas of research.
