In Episode 471 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” I welcome an Orlando, FL-based radiologist named Dr. J. Daniel Jones who has a personal passion for healthy low-carb living these days. Although his field of medicine doesn’t directly allow him to interact with patients regarding their diet, “Dr. Dan” has certainly seen his fair share of the ramifications of nutrition-related diseases come across his computer screen in the past three decades of being a radiologist. But it wasn’t until he discovered healthy low-carb living as a way to control his Type 1 diabetes since the age of 34 that he began putting all the puzzle pieces together for himself. My wife Christine and I met Dr. Dan and his wife in Key West, FL during the 2011 Low-Carb Cruise and you could immediately sense that great things are sure to come from this man in the coming years. He doesn’t have a web site, blog, book or anything like that…YET! But I’m sure it’s in the works right now since he so desperately desires to get the word out to as many people as possible what a quality Paleo-styled, low-carb diet can do to greatly improve the health of diabetics especially. Enjoy hearing this medical professional speak from his heart about the tremendous positive impact of livin’ la vida low-carb!

Listen to “Dr. Dan” discuss living with Type 1 diabetes:

  • His foray into the medical field in the late-1970s
  • The “devastating” news of his Type 1 diabetes diagnosis
  • His 440 blood sugar reading from a fasting blood test
  • The “bagel and banana diet” he went on to combat the diabetes
  • The subsequent “rollercoaster” ride that ensued
  • How Dr. Richard Bernstein’s book totally changed his thinking
  • Why the insulin pump is not the be-all, end-all cure
  • How losing his eyesight made him get serious about low-carb
  • The reversal of symptoms leading to “normal” eyesight
  • How “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” helped continue to educate him
  • Why he thinks all humans should be eating a low-carb diet
  • The “blind eye” that is being shown towards low-carb research
  • Why it could be a couple of decades before answers are discovered
  • The lack of consensus about how to feed humans
  • Why he is choosing to speak out without a book or web site
  • The “power of the Internet” influencing people towards low-carb
  • His disappointment in seeing the MRI results of “noncompliant” diabetics
  • A crazy discussion on an ADA forum about diabetics eating cornbread
  • The importance of controlling blood sugars in Type 1 diabetics
  • Why the “fat kills” message is so detrimental to the diabetes cause
  • Why diabetics feel they are “entitled” to the Standard American Diet
  • How insulin is both life-saving and potentially life-threatening
  • The real fear of death from hypoglycemia for people with diabetes
  • Why a diabetic needs to be “motivated” to control their disease
  • His theory about why Type 1 diabetes is on the rise lately
  • The life stressors that can lead people to developing Type 1 diabetes
  • The susceptibility to autoimmune diseases for people with Type 1
  • What he means by diabetes being the “perfect corporate disease”
  • His newfound skepticism about just about all of his medical beliefs
  • How the low-carb message is going to penetrate the culture
  • Why every low-carber should be supporting The Nutrition & Metabolism Society
  • Why more grassroots efforts online are needed to promote low-carb
  • The explosion of Paleo-styled web sites in the past couple of years
  • Why most people “don’t have time to think about food” and don’t
  • The old guard in the ADA being overcome by the new youth wave

      Hi Jimmy:

I enjoyed your broadcast. One thing that interested me was how to spread our message. Well, you might be interested in what’s going on in California, where I live. A “John McDougall MD” authored a bill in the California State Senate (SB 380) in order to require California doctors to receive continuing education about the relationship between diet and common diseases. The bill, with some modification, passed 7 to 1 in the Senate Business & Professions Committee. Here are the opening statements before that committee given in support of the bill by Dr. McDougall and Dr. Don Forrester. I thought you might want to take a listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZRYxz0Eft8&feature=player_embedded

Dr. John McDougal MD’s ideas of the perfect diet is not a Low-Carb either, just check out his web site. http://www.drmcdougall.com/

Anyway, this seems like a set back for Low-Carb in California.

THANKS Cathi! I’m no fan of McDougal’s work…We’ll keep fighting against the nonsense.

I just got around to listening to this podcast tonight. Excellent and it really touched home. I have T2DM and control my BG with a low carb diet but I had two sisters with T1DM and both died with horrible diabetic complications after about 40 years. So sad they were not given a choice of low carb by their doctors. Also I have worked in an eye clinic where there is a constant stream of people with diabetic retinopathy. None of these patients are ever told there is another way that may reverse their retinal and other problems related to high blood sugars.

I agree that we need to support the Nutrition and Metabolism Society and that the grass roots movement is where changes will start.

Another possible reason for the increasing incidence of T1DM is celiac disease(CD)and gluten sensitivity. CD has increased over the past decades and there is a strong correlation with T1DM. They may find even a bigger correlation if they look at those with non-sensitive gluten sensitivity.
