In Episode 463 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from a returning podcast guest named Dr. Larry McCleary, a neurologist who is promoting the brain-belly connection in a brand new revised and expanded version of his book Feed Your Brain, Lose Your Belly. I had Dr. McCleary on my podcast last year to talk about the first edition of this book which was so well received that he decided to revise and expand it with a whole new chapter for 2011! If you didn’t think there was a connection between carbs, insulin, brain health and expanding waistlines, then you need to listen to what Dr. McCleary has to say.

Listen to Dr. Larry McCleary explain how the brain and belly are indelibly connected:

  • Why he thinks he comes to “Low-Carb Mecca” when he visits my podcast
  • Why he decided to create a new version of his 2010 book
  • Why he believes insulin is the master hormone that warrants attention
  • The “good side” and the “dark side” of insulin
  • The dramatic negative effects of insulin on the brain
  • More and more researchers connecting insulin to Type 3 diabetes (Alzheimer’s disease)
  • Why Americans like a quick fix such as a prescription drug to cover diet sins
  • How reducing carbs can improve migraines and hot flashes
  • Whether or not it is safe to be in a ketogenic state for years
  • Why people have such an abhorrent fear of fat…but shouldn’t be
  • The unintended consequences of lower fat consumption on weight and health
  • Why we need more “brain happy” fat in our diet
  • Whether it’s possible butter has insulinogenic effects
  • What’s wrong with George Stella using non-trans fat margarine instead of butter
  • If it is EVER a good thing to limit fat in your diet for the majority of people
  • Why coconut oil is such an essential part of the brain-body connection
  • How feeding cows coconut oil did not make them gain, but lose weight
  • What his favorite snack is and why it became his favorite
  • Why it’s easy to overeat nuts and getting too many calories
  • How do people determine the right level of calories for them
  • Why you’ll keep eating food that mixes carbohydrate with dietary fat
  • Whether exercise is more detrimental than beneficial for losing weight
  • How exercise gets you more in touch with your body
  • Why people tend to get so emotionally tied to their weight
  • How to stay motivated to stick with your low-carb lifestyle
  • What fetal programming is and why he added this new chapter to his book
  • Why eating a low-carb diet during pregnancy is the best way to eat
  • What one low-carb concept he wants to communicate to people above all else

Hi Jimmy, another very informative podcast – thanks. We are using the diet to control hormones (insulin) and it is this control that seems to be driving the health benefit. Hormones are very powerful things.

His comments about the hormone insulin in pregnancy were interesting. I think it is about getting all the hormones right (in pregnancy and otherwise) and have added my own links relating to vitamin D (hormone) and thyroid (hormone)in pregnancy.

      Jimmy,
As always, great interview! I really enjoyed Dr. McCleary – he was very clear and drove home some excellent points. Even though I’ve heard him before, it never hurts to review the lessons! M
