In Episode 462 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from an extraordinary man living with Type 1 diabetes since 1957 by the name of Ron Raab who serves as the President of the tax-exempt, not-for-profit group called Insulin For Life. The mission of this Australian-based group is to make sure people with diabetes around the world have access to the diabetes testing supplies and insulin they need to manage their disease. Ron is a HUGE personal fan of using a low-carbohydrate/low-insulin regime which has resulted in a major improvement in his own daily blood sugars and quality of life–and he’s committed to spreading that message to diabetics worldwide! As you listen to him speak in this interview, you’ll sense his despair over how low-carb nutrition has been so summarily dismissed by the scientists and medical professionals who should know better. But he’s encouraged by the grassroots efforts of low-carb bloggers and researchers who are helping to bring about change in thinking about livin’ la vida low-carb.

Listen to Ron Raab explain why he’s so passionate about helping diabetics worldwide:

  • How his own Type 1 diabetes and family history spurred him to take action
  • What led him to the low-carbohydrate approach that was “like a bolt from the blue”
  • Why he found switching to a low-carb diet to manage his diabetes was difficult
  • The symptoms of his diabetes that improved when he started eating low-carb
  • His frustration about why low-carb nutrition is ignored by diabetes health leaders
  • Why it’s ludicrous to think a high-carb/high-insulin diet will properly manage diabetes
  • How he pushes the logic of low-carb as a means for promoting it to people
  • Why there’s “no incentive” for promoting carbohydrate-restriction for diabetics
  • How people are being “made diabetic” by diabetes clinics and medical professionals
  • Why medical professionals and researchers seem to be embracing “selective science”
  • The importance of grassroots efforts to “produce the groundswell” for low-carb
  • Examples of paradigm shift changes that happened in other fields of science
  • Why it’s ludicrous for diabetics to be told to eat pasta, rice, potatoes and high-carb foods
  • In a perfect world, what he would like to see happen to bring about change
  • Why you “don’t get a lot of action” out of published journal articles
  • The lack of science given to the USDA educating them on low-carb diets
  • How the growth in diabetes may be what leads people to the low-carb answer
  • Why we’re “running in circles” about what to do about diabetes
  • The unintended health consequences of a high-carb diet beyond diabetes
  • Why it’s so important for diabetics to be deliberate about cutting their carb intake
  • The recent introduction of calories into weight/health management
  • How the “minority consensus” pushed through a high-carb, low-fat diet
  • Why it’s dangerous for people to eat a low-fat, low-carb diet
  • What China is doing to “attack the diabetes problem” there
  • Why insulin is “a luxury drug” used to treat the “luxury disease” of Type 1 diabetes
  • How the high-carb diet is playing out in developed nations around the world
  • The way diabetes is giving low-carb nutrition a foothold in treatment
  • Why diabetic conferences are stuck on promoting a high-carb, low-fat diet

All the background noise is very distracting. I think your microphone is picking up more than you know. Please listen to this interview so you can hear this.

Jeanne, I’m well aware of the noise and I apologize for the distraction. But it was happening on Ron’s end of the Skype call. I didn’t want to stop the interview because I could still hear what he was saying. After the interview was finished, I asked him about the noise throughout and he had no idea. He said his wife was moving stuff around. If you only knew all the stuff I deal with to make these interviews happen…I should write a book about it someday. ;)

Yay! I’m not alone! I have sure felt it. Just Dr. Bernstein (whom I have never met) and me. Now one more. In all my contacts with fellow type 1s I have NEVER come across another type 1 who does low-carb. I have so wanted a friend.

    • Katie Vincent

Thanks for the podcasts…You are doing us a great favour. Keep it going!

    • http://diabeticmediterraneandiet.com Steve Parker, M.D.

I was going to compliment you on the quality of the recording! Came out fine in my neck of the blogosphere. Another great interview, Jimmy. Mr. Raab’s in a position to influence the current diabetes care model.
