We’ve put a lot of emphasis on the tremendous impact of the Paleo diet this week through my special focus on it at my podcast during “Paleo Extravaganza Week.” While I recognize the term “Paleo” means different things depending on who you talk to, then basis of most of versions goes something like this: hearken back to the animal-based high-fat, lower-carb diet of our early ancestors, avoid the convenience foods of modern man, exercise in a way that simulates our hunter-gatherer predecessors and let your lifestyle reflect these principles despite living in the 21st Century. It may sound absurd to some people, but this is the way we were meant to live in order to be as strong and healthy as we can possibly be. And we’ve already heard testimonies of how powerful Paleo can be this week from people like Mark Pomery, Dr. Loren Cordain, and Diane Sanfilippo with one more interview tomorrow featuring Monica Hughes.

In Episode 451 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we literally hear from the granddaddy of them all in Paleo/evolutionary diet legend Art De Vany. He’s been a previous guest on my podcast in December 2008, but his work has gotten a whole lot more attention in recent months. This has already been a big week for this 73-year old “superman” as his work was highlighted along with Robb Wolf this week on ABC-TV’s “Nightline” on March 1, 2011. And his monumental new book The New Evolution Diet: What Our Paleolithic Ancestors Can Teach Us about Weight Loss, Fitness, and Aging is the culmination of nearly two decades of living like a Paleolithic/neanderthal man. So many people have discovered Paleo/low-carb living as a result of being exposed to the amazingly inspiring work of the great Art De Vany!

Listen to Art De Vany share why Paleo living is so important:

  • The release of his book after many years of research and writing
  • Why Paleo seems to have gained momentum as of late
  • The reach of Paleo into India and China that is coming
  • The epigenetic factors involved in obesity and diabetes
  • Some of the superhuman health markers he possesses at 73
  • How our genes express health through proper diet and exercise
  • The absurdity of waiting to switch to a Paleo diet until after 40
  • Why a modern Paleo diet should be similar and not identical to Paleolithic times
  • Why intermittent fasting and going hungry once a week is necessary
  • The pulsating burst of insulin that happens in anticipation of food
  • Getting into the “Paleolithic range” for improved insulin sensitivity
  • The inflammatory high-calorie diet consumed by Michael Phelps
  • What he thinks about the role the hormone insulin plays in health
  • The role of exercise in improving exercise sensitivity
  • Why exercising less and doing it more intensely is best
  • How “eat less, exercise more” became embraced as normal by people
  • Why the brain without glucose has no willpower
  • Whether there is any benefit to fasting more than once a week
  • How the body will adapt to scheduled eating patterns
  • The concept of “muscle is medicine” in overall health
  • His typical Paleo-styled real food menu plan
  • Why consuming raw food in your diet may be risky
  • The reason why he cuts visible fat from the meats he eats
  • Why eating a variety of foods is important to diversify toxin exposure
  • Why it is important not to ignore natural bodily signals like hunger
  • How being chronically hungry makes you become fatter
  • What a typical day in the life of his diet and exercise plan looks like
  • Why you can’t possibly overeat when you’re consuming a Paleo diet
  • How exercising in a fasted state can benefit your health

Art is only into himself. He is one of the worst Atkins haters going. Still pushes the lies about his death.

      • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

I didn’t sense that in any of my conversations with him and he knows where I stand on Atkins and low-carb. Perhaps he’s changed his mind, PJ.

      • Zack Flummerfelt

        “Art is only into himself.”

I’ve been reading and subcribing to Devany’s site for years and I have to say this is bit of a reach into someone’s soul don’t you think? Devany (and Cordain) for that matter have highly nuanced views on saturated fat and orthodox low-carb dieting. Devany’s doesn’t claim to be a lowcarber in the same vein. For you to expect an orthodox Atkins approach from Devany’s website is a false expectation.

“he (sic) early posts spoke nothing about paleo”

This is a straw man “Paleo” is more narrow category in the broader scope of evolution. Devany has place in the diverse, I repeat diverse, paleo movement. His original Evolutionary Fitness paper that dates back to at least the year 2000 should confirm this let alone his longtime association and friendship with Dr. Cordain.

“Atkins is the starting point for all low carb, paleo and/or any diet outside the SAD standard.”

You may force this on yourself but the rest of us need not.

    • pjnoir

I use to pay to be on his blog site until the comments about Atkins “dying fatand overweight with heart disease. He always added that even if he did die from slipping on the ice, I would never have because I am nimble and would never fall, this spoken by a man living in southern California, not knowing a thinmg about dark city ice and front stoops. He is only about himself. Sorry but he gets far to much credit as a leader in Paleo, he early posts spoke nothing about paleo and advocated a lot of fruit for breakfast. If he changed his mind, it was for his benefit, not low carb or paleo. Again, sorry for the tone, you can delete this message, but my button gets pushed since that post. Aktins is the starting point for all low carb, paleo and/or any diet outside the SAD standard. And nobody reads past the first two weeks. Demonized as a heart terrorist by the public, even those that support him fear mentioning his name.

        I welcome Art to respond.

    • pjnoir

Just watched some wonderful you tube videos by DR Johnny Bowden, a fine ambassador of low carb and Paleo and a gentleman. Sorry Jimmy, but I don’t pull many punches, something I should learn.

      • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

        I’ve long admired Jonny.

    • http://criticalmas.com MAS

Great show Jimmy. Thank you for asking about daily 16 hours. This is something I’ve been playing with and my progress has stalled. Going forward I’ll be more “spontaneous and random”.

    • pjnoir

I’m sorry Jimmy but something must be going around because suddenly on my facebook wall – the paleo folks have posted Art De jokes ala chuck norris. Seems a lot of people see him the same way.

    • PHK

      thanks.

his discussion about “chaos” & randomness is to prevent our bodies from “adapting” is really interesting. (perhaps it’s like “kick the butt of your metabolism to keep it on its toes. XD)
i’ve been semi-fasting 16 hr/day somewhat everyday for the last few months. now i’ll try more random spontaneous approach.

      regards,
