In Episode 440 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from a physician named Dr. Harriette Mogul who has a book entitled Syndrome W: A Woman’s Guide to Reversing Midlife Weight Gain that explains what inhibits weight loss for so many women as they reach a certain age (it applies to men as well but women seem to get hit hardest with this). The plan is kinda low-carb, but with some interesting concepts that I think will be fodder for discussion after you listen to my interview today. Hear Dr. Harriette Mogul discuss how she was a “chunky child” while classmates all seemed to be thin, how much she was astonished at the lack of nutrition education in medical school, why she thinks medical doctors are looked to as the experts on weight loss and why it is so difficult to find the “optimal regimen” to help people lose weight, why physicians are more apt to promote drugs and surgery over lifestyle change for weight loss, when she would choose bariatric surgery to help a patient lose weight, what Syndrome W is, why it’s not limited to just women, the “major changes” made to the revision of the book (got rid of the pink cover!), what she thinks is causing the rise in insulin levels as they reach midlife, the influence of Dr. Robert Lustig on her work, whether Syndrome W is a relatively new phenomena brought on by modern-day conveniences and technology, whether a thyroid problem can exacerbate Syndrome W, what tests she runs on her patients to determine if they have Syndrome W, the importance of the two-hour glucose tolerance test, how Syndrome W is different from the normal midlife weight gain, why overweight are shamed and deemed unhealthy while skinny/normal weight people are lauded and considered healthy, why “normal” when it comes to weight is so severely skewed, the results of the randomized, controlled clinical trial on her Syndrome W protocol, the 4-3-2-1 Pyramid implementing the “carbohydrate-modified diet” within the Mogul Protocol, why she thinks people can’t stay on a low-carb diet over the long-term, why she encourages “forbidden foods” in her patient’s diet, why she chooses to promote low-fat dairy and protein devoid of saturated fat, what she thinks about the satiating properties of consuming dietary fat, her concerns with cheese and nuts being too easily over-consumed, whether any of her patients have problems with the carbohydrates she recommends, what reasons her patients give that they can’t stick with a low-carb diet, her use of Metformin to help those who have an especially difficult time losing weight even if they don’t have diabetes, the adjustment of the Metformin dose to prevent nausea, and the trickiness of coding someone with diabetes who does not have diabetes just to have the healthcare costs covered.
