In Episode 439 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we bring to you Part 1 of an interview with one of the most popular podcast guests of all-time–New York Times bestselling author Gary Taubes! His 2007 tome Good Calories Good Calories is widely regarded as a game changer in how medical professionals view a high-fat, low-carb diet as a therapeutic treatment option to use on their patients. In that book he went into great detail with the historical account of how we got into the low-fat, high-carb mantra that has become the basis of conventional dietary wisdom in modern society. But the problem with GCBC was it is so laborious for the non-medical person who couldn’t slug through it without a big headache. After some urging from me and others over the past few years, we finally convinced Gary to write a more consumer-friendly version of his classic book so that it could be something people could give to their friends, family and even their doctor to communicate the low-carb message with credibility. The result of that was the December 2010 publication of the much more practical Why We Get Fat And What To Do About It that is set to reach a much wider audience. Keep your eye on this book to see how well it does throughout 2011–I have a sense good things are yet to come!
Listen to Gary Taubes talk about his brand new blog and his plans for it, the usual suspects who have been critical of Gary and writing comments on his blog posts, the media opportunities he has received for his new book compared with GCBC, the Reader’s Digest column about Gary and his new book, the reasons why he wrote Why We Get Fat, the influence of Dr. Eric Westman’s nutritional recommendations for his patients in his book, cooking with coconut oil and his favorite new find coconut butter, how he responds to some of the primary criticisms he receives like he’s only in it for the money, the “torture” of physical education in schools, the perplexing views of people who support low-carb but don’t like his work, how the Internet allows virtually anyone to have a voice, the cyberstalking that takes place online, why he doesn’t have time to respond to every little critic, the stark contrast between bloggers like James Krieger and Peter at HyperLipid, his interaction with the “twisted” antics of CarbSane, how he defines winning the debate with these critics, the response from the listeners who listened to the CarbSane interview, why he doesn’t mind having criticism of his theories, why GCBC was actually three PhD theses wrapped up in one book, the meticulous way he did research for GCBC, the admitted “little mistakes” that wound up in GCBC, the experts Gary interviewed that led him to the conclusions he wrote in GCBC, how quickly the science changes in the time it takes to bring a book like GCBC to print where mistakes will be made, and the criticism he receives for his notion that “calories don’t count” and what he means by it. This has got to be the most candid conversation I’ve ever had with Gary Taubes and I look forward to sharing the exciting conclusion of this interview in Part 2 airing tomorrow!
