Nutrition & Metabolism Society Video: The Testimony Of Low-Carb Diabetes Legend Dr. Richard K. Bernstein

One of the coolest parts about getting to work in the low-carb industry interviewing the biggest names in the world of nutrition, fitness, and health is the privilege I get to rub elbows with some of the real superstars supporting the science and practicality behind livin’ la vida low-carb. I don’t like to name drop or anything, but I consider people like Gary Taubes, Jackie Eberstein, Dr. Mary C. Vernon, Dr. Eric Westman, Fred Hahn, Drs. Mike & Mary Dan Eades, Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, Dr. James Carlson, Dr. Richard Feinman, Dana Carpender, Dr. Ron Rosedale, Tom Naughton, and so many others friends. I’ve not only interviewed so many of these wonderful people on my podcast which is a distinct pleasure, but I’ve also had the opportunity to meet them in person at various conferences that have taken place all around the country as well as the annual low-carb cruise. What a wonderful perk of the job that quite frankly never gets old. But last month I was honored to be a part of an event in New York City with The Nutrition & Metabolism Society where I was the official videographer. My job was to record the lectures by the speakers who were present and post them on YouTube. One of the most celebrated invited guests is a real hero and legend in the realm of low-carbdom: Dr. Richard K. Bernstein!

Dr. Bernstein is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of the low-carb nutritional approach for diabetics since he himself has been living with Type 1 diabetes for over six decades and thriving. And after being written off by conventional medicine, Dr. Bernstein discovered the importance of carbohydrate control on controlling blood sugars and set out to dedicate his life to helping other diabetics have normal blood sugars like non-diabetics have. He first appeared on my “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” podcast in June 2009 and was so widely received that my listeners voted him back for Encore Week in January 2010 as one of their top five favorite podcast guests last year. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who has been vilified by the mainstream medical establishment who has fought Dr. Bernstein tooth and nail every step of the way. Even still, he’s remained vigilant in his pursuit of empowering diabetics with the truth about the negative role carbohydrates play in health. He has written several books, including his famous revised and updated version of The Diabetes Solution which is the dietary bible for so many people living with diabetes because it has saved their lives. Dr. Bernstein’s personal story of how he found out about low-carb diets, what it was like in the early days of doing it, his medical school journey in his 40s, and the obstacles he has had to overcome were the subject of a fantastic one-hour video lecture conducted on Saturday, May 8, 2010 with a group of about 40 supporters of the work of The Nutrition & Metabolism Society in attendance. Learn from this low-carb master and be encouraged by the uplifting message he has to share!

Jimmy, i realy love this presentation. Watched it a couple of times already. But did you know that you can combine the six seperate YouTube video’s into one YouTube playlist. You can than embed this playlist in your posts. http://www.youtube.com/cutthecarb#g/p VBR Hans

    • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

THANKS Hans! Yes, I know that you can make a playlist, but I like the idea of separate videos in case someone wants to watch one or two now, then a couple later during their busy day. :) Happy you enjoyed it!

Hey Jimmy, listening to Dr. Bernstein’s talk was the best part of the day for me… other than meeting you, of course…

    • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

HA! I think hearing from a living legend like Dr. Bernstein trumps meeting a dorky blogger like me any day. :D It was great to finally meet the infamous MrFreddy, though.

Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen his whole body before. He sure looks like he’s one fit guy!

    • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

      He’s definitely a skinny man!

  • Cathi

Wow. . .that is was really interesting. Thank you Jimmy for putting that hope.

Boy, when I got to the last part of the video, where Dr. Bernstein was talking about the last five patients, who could not losing weight, I really thought he was going to start talk about the connection between Diabetics 1 and Celiac Disease. I just found out through DNA test that I have the HLA-DQB1 *0302, which predisposes one for Celiac Disease. I didn’t realize until lately that it is also the same DNA gene that predisposes one towards Late onset Diabetes 1.

{This is from information is from Wikipedia – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HLA-DQB1
    HLA-DQB1
Major histocompatibility complex, class II, DQ beta 1, also known as HLA-DQB1, is a human gene and also denotes the genetic locus that contains this gene.[1] The protein encoded by this gene is one of two proteins that are required to form the DQ heterodimer, a cell surface receptor essential to the function of the immune system.

    Diabetes:
Several alleles of HLA-DQB1 are associated with an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes.[3][4][5] The locus also has the genetic name IDDM1 as it is the highest genetic risk for type 1 diabetes. Again the DQB1*0201 and DQB1*0302 alleles, particularly the phenotype DQB1*0201/*0302 has a high risk of late onset type 1 diabetes. The risk is partially shared with the HLA-DR locus (DR3 and DR4 serotypes).

    Coeliac disease:
    Celiac1 is a genetic name for DQB1, the HLA DQB1*0201, *0202, and *0302 encode genes that mediate the autoimmune coeliac disease. Homozygotes of DQB1*0201 have a higher risk of developing the coeliac disease, relative to any other genetic locus.[6]}

It was interesting listening to Dr. Bernstein talk about “ low Immune deficiency” with Diabetics, and how he struggled with Sinusitis and diarrhea. I too have struggled with those two things most of my life, and just recently was diagnosed with Celiac Disease along with low Immune deficiency. My Natural killer Cells on the blood test that I took are severely low. A normal count on a test is supposed be around 100, anything below 20 is bad. My test came out less than five. So, My Doctor has me on Gabba Globulin Shots to try to bring up my immune systems. Now as for FAT, which Dr. Bernstein talked in the case of those last 5 patients was either being stored or leaving through Carbon Dioxide in the breath. In my case, I am not storing it. According to the test that I took, I am severely Mal-absorbed and my fat is passing out of my body, which is why I am unable to get the proper amounts of Magnesium and Vitamin D even know I am taking high amounts of both of these two vitamins.

Now there was a test done that proved the theory of the Deficiency of invariant natural killer T cells in coeliac disease
in celiac disease that published online 2006 November 23 by Grose RH, Thompson FM, Cummins AG Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Adelaide, Woodville South, SA 5011, Australia.
Here is the results of that test
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1954856/

It was interesting that Dr. Bernstein also found that his 5 patients had Low Immune Deficiency.
I also found it interesting, when he talked about himself having Lymphoma. Celiac Disease can cause a person to have what they call a non-cancer large Lymphoma. Celiac Disease undiagnosed can lead to Intestinal Cancer too. So, I find the similarities between Diabetic 1 and Celiac Disease very interesting indeed. I wonder if, Dr. Bernstein has his patients also tested for Celiac Disease, because you can have both.

Anyway, thank you so much Jimmy for putting up Dr. Bernstein U-Tube Videos they were incredibly interesting, and really got me thinking.

Thanks for watching and don’t miss the next videos coming.

    Jimmy,
In part 2 at about 5:35, Dr. Bernstein states that his hdl is 123 and his ldl is 53. Having hdl much greater than ldl is unusual. If Dr. Bernstein didn’t misspeak, then he is doing something right.

    • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

      Nope, he didn’t misspeak.

  • Dan Jones MD

I am a physician Type 1 diabetic for 24 years. I am a radiologist and professionally do not treat diabetics. I do not have a website or a financial or political motivation in the below comments. I am a diabetic “user” who requires insulin and is motivated to spread the word of a great man.

I just returned from the American Diabetes Association meeting, which is attended from people from all over the world who sincerely believe that the ADA is the only authority on diabetes. I attended as a physician to learn the latest and greatest in diabetic treatment. I went as a knowledgeable physician, but primarily as a “user”. At the meeting, there were innumerable brilliant scientific and physician authorities and their followers. There were NO scientific sessions on low carb, and essentially no mention of low carb options. Dr. Bernstein’s book is not sold at the ADA book booth.

I have no doubt that the people of the ADA do what they believe is right. But it seems to be such “an old boys club” with little innovation from the mainstream perpetual diabetic dogma, heavily influenced by technology, pharmaceutics, and government food pyramids. The ADA seemed missing of youth, novel and new ideas.

I left with one major thought, “thank God I discovered Dr. Richard K. Bernstein”. I remain totally astounded that his concepts and teachings are not accepted, in spite of a wealth of evolving evidence supporting it.

Here is what the ADA has done for me:
    1. Misled me for decades about what constitutes acceptable control. This exposed me to undue risk and complications. I was a motivated patient and did what I was told was right and considered a model patient.
    2. Misled my doctors for decades about what constitutes acceptable control.
    3. Taken my money for decades and promised a cure – in spite of hundreds of millions of dollars I have not seen significant improvements in type 1 care in my duration of Type 1 diabetes
    4. Encouraged me to eat low fat high carbohydrate diet at my risk – and the benefit of food industry and their lobbyists, and naive nutritionists.
    5. Encouraged me to eat a diet not acceptable to the human animal or my genetics, so as to live a “normal” life and not be stressed.
    6. Encouraged me to take and for my doctors to prescribe statins for lipid profile improvement, with statin side effects.

Here is what Dr. Bernstein has done for me:
    1. Taught me to achieve near normal blood sugars, without risky severe hypoglycemia
    2. Taught me to decrease blood sugar fluctuations and excursions.
    3. Totally reversed complications.
    4. By finally learning control, I have developed a much more optimistic attitude about my disease, a much better outlook.
    5. Achieved a normal lipid profile with no statins, low carb diet only. Coronary calcium score 0.
    6. Taught me to eat a much more healthy and nutritious diet then I had before.
    7. Made me healthier and better.

My experience motivates me so strongly to encourage other diabetics to investigate the Bernstein type low carb option for diabetic treatment. If you have diabetes, please investigate this in detail. Read his book – twice.

THANK YOU for your work, Dr. Jones! You are the kind of physician we need leading this charge to improve the health of patients with diabetes.
