As I’m writing this, I am packing my bags to drive down the road three hours from my home in South Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia for the 2013 Ancestral Health Symposium (#AHS13). I’ve been privileged to attend the first two that took place in Los Angeles in 2011 and then in Boston in 2012. It’s a great place to meet and hear from the top voices and leaders who are promoting health from more of an evolutionary perspective than what the lockstep unison information from virtually all of the current authorities on nutrition and medicine. What’s cool about attending this conference is you have an eclectic mix of hundreds of scientists, physicians, dietitians, CrossFit fans, Paleo bloggers and podcasters, and even people who are just learning about what an ancestral diet and lifestyle is all about all together in one place. The loving community is part of what has helped Paleo become such a huge hit over the past few years and it’s that willingness to welcome in new people to the fold that has been the secret to the swell of success it has seen.
Ever since I began attending various Paleo/low-carb/health conferences like AHS, PaleoFX, and even some obesity medicine events, I’ve gotten a reputation for being “Mr. Twitter” with very detailed and prolific LIVE tweeting during various sessions. I really do enjoy listening, absorbing and then regurgitating the information in 140 characters or less during conferences because it hopefully helps people who aren’t there feel like they are. Whether you are already on Twitter or if this has piqued your curiosity to create an account to follow my tweets, you can keep up with all of the action by following @livinlowcarbman beginning on Thursday, August 15, 2013 through Saturday, August 17, 2013. Of course, I won’t be the only one tweeting at the event, so follow all the LIVE tweets from me and others at the hash tag #AHS13. If you’ve never been to the Ancestral Health Symposium and want to get a taste of what it’s like, then hop on Twitter and follow the action all weekend.
This year I will be a participant in two primary ways at #AHS13: I’m leading a one-hour panel on “Ketogenic Diets & Exercise Performance” on Friday, August 16, 2013 at 1PM ET featuring a fabulous, highly-qualified group of experts including Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Ben Greenfield and Jamie Scott. The discussion should be amazing and perhaps not nearly as controversial as my “safe starches” panel was in 2012. Then, as soon as that session is over, I will be presenting a 90-minute poster session with the key findings and results from my one-year n=1 experiment testing nutritional ketosis over the past year. I’ll have miniature 8 1/2 X 11 versions of the poster available for the people attending the conference to take with them. But for those of you who won’t be attending #AHS13, here’s a quick peek at the poster I created:

It’s funny for me to be doing something like this because one year ago I had never even given a talk with PowerPoint slides before until that opportunity was given to me to do a speaking tour through Australia in November 2012. Now I’ve got the bug for doing lectures in front of people and I absolutely LOVE sharing in this format. I suppose doing podcasts prepped me somewhat for doing that kind of thing, but I never took the opportunity to give it a go before. The same goes for poster presentations. It’s not something I’ve ever done before, but I can see myself doing more of these in the years to come. Look out world, nothing’s gonna stop me now!
There is one other experience happening for me at #AHS13–I’ll be seeing for the first time copies of my upcoming August 27, 2013 Victory Belt book release Cholesterol Clarity: What The HDL Is Wrong With My Numbers? which are scheduled to come off the printer by Friday and shipped to Atlanta in time for the final day of #AHS13. I couldn’t be prouder of a project than I am of that book that I poured my heart and soul into making over the past year or so. Interviewing 29 of my best experts on cholesterol and then getting Dr. Eric Westman, MD as my coauthor on perhaps the most unique book about this subject you’ll ever read was such a gratifying experience. I’m not gonna lie, I have very high hopes for this book to be extremely successful and maybe even crack the New York Times bestsellers list. If that happens, then maybe just maybe we can begin to see a slow but noticeable shift in the conventional thinking that has long told us that eating a low-fat, high-carb diet with moderate exercise and statin medications is the way to be heart healthy. And the end goal is to get people to stop obsessing about their LDL-C and total cholesterol as the be-all, end-all that determines their risk for having a heart attack. There’s so much more to the story that we worked hard to communicate in easy-to-understand language throughout the book. If you’ve missed hearing me talk about Cholesterol Clarity on various podcasts (and there are PLENTY more to come in the next few weeks), then you can check them all out at the Media page for my book. I can’t wait to hear what YOU think about the book when it becomes available (yes, the Kindle and other e-book versions are coming on the day it releases).
