LLVLC On YouTube (Episode 49): Low-Carbing On The Cheap Is Not That Hard

How do you eat a low-carb diet with very little money?

I’ve heard it so much over the years from people considering the low-carb lifestyle. It’s an excuse that people like to use against this wonderful way of eating that has helped me and others get our weight and health under control. You’ve no doubt heard it yourself–low-carb is too expensive! All those meats cost money and I just don’t think I can afford to do this diet.

In Episode 49 of “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube,” Christine and I share some tips and ideas about how to low-carb on the cheap and show you it’s not really that hard to do at all. Low-carb isn’t all about meat as you well know, but even getting inexpensive meats isn’t difficult if you know what you are looking for. If I had a dollar every time somebody has told me they can’t afford to be on a low-carb diet, then I’d be a millionaire by now!

See how to low-carb on a budget in today’s video:

Great video you two! One other thing, many stores have a section within the meat area that has labeled packages stating “Butcher’s Special of the day” or something to that effect. I’ve gotten meats that way at about 1/3 the regular prices.
    Thanks for the tips! :)

    Hey Jimmy,

Great video – enjoyed it. Did you forget fish? In the UK we can get tuna, salmon, sardines, pilchards etc for a dollar a can or less – full of protein and good fats! Even fresh fish can be cheap if you pick the right ones – over here you can find fresh sardines and mackerel very cheaply as well as a variety of other sea fish if you can find the right store. I think the last time I visited the US I bought some fresh catfish which was pretty cheap…

Basically, this is the corn diet, as the mainstay of the diet is meat from factory farms in which the animals are fed corn (and antibiotics because many animals are not designed to eat corn so they get sick, and hormones so they eat lots of corn.)

It’s cheap all right, because corn is subsidized by the tax-payers, but one of the manny hidden costs (Michael Pollen details the other ones) is that the run-off from the high pesticide use in corn production is poisoning the Gulf of Mexico.

If we passed you and Christine through a spectrometer (don’t try this at home) you’d find you were made of corn, which maybe explains the corny jokes.

This is a diet with lots of hidden costs that you don’t pay for when you go through the check-out line at Cosco.

For me, low carb is the cheaper way to diet. Prince Charming is the original carnivore anyway so I have to include a lot of meat in my menu. Low carb is the one diet that will make him happy and still help me lose weight.

Don’t hot dogs usually contain HFCS or some variation thereof? I have found a brand of bison franks that do not but I stay away from processed meats mostly due to the sugars (and nitrates/nitrites) in them.

Christine, don’t feel bad…cranial flatulence is my middle name! LOL! ;oD

Almost forgot (SEE!! Cranial flatulence!!) I see so many commercial salad dressings with one form of sugar or another…I make my own for use at home and figure blue cheese is the safest bet eating out.

    Great topic to cover! Thanks
