NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: http://cmp.ly/3

In Episode 411 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” I’m happy to have registered nurse Sally Pacholok from B12 Awareness to talk about how so many chronic diseases are misdiagnosed as something else when they are in fact related to a deficiency in Vitamin B12. She co-wrote a comprehensive book on this subject with Dr. Jeffrey Stuart called Could It Be B12?: An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses. Listen to Sally talk about how her own personal enlarged red blood cells that led her to researching Vitamin B12, why doctors think Vitamin B12 deficiency only happens in the elderly, how she became so passionate about educating the public about Vitamin B12 after the failure of the conventional wisdom from physicians, why mainstream physicians need to take this issue more seriously for the sake of the health of their patients, why the daily recommended dose of Vitamin B12 is way too low, why the dosage should be at least 1000 mcg in a lozenge form, how a blood test can determine how much Vitamin B12 you need to take, why the guidelines need to be changed for how much Vitamin B12 should be consumed, how the common signs of aging are actually Vitamin B12 deficiency, the statistics of Vitamin B12 deficiency occurrence, why people are so grossly misdiagnosed with their Vitamin B12 deficiency, how there comes a point when people have become too damaged by their lack of Vitamin B12, the misunderstanding of terms that confuses the public, the severe lack of nutrition training in medical school, how the diabetes medication Metformin may be impacting Vitamin B12 blood levels, the gastrointestinal drugs and nitrous oxide that deplete Vitamin B12 leading to severe deficiency symptoms, the emergence of Vitamin B12 deficiency possibly leading to developmental delay and autism, how veganism can lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency unless you adequately supplement, how a patient can get properly tested with a blood, urine or homocysteine test, why children under the age of 12 need to have the urine test done, the ideal Vitamin B12 levels you should shoot for, the dangers of gastric bypass patients becoming severely Vitamin B12 deficient, the kind of supplements people can consume to get Vitamin B12, why getting a Vitamin B12 shot is the most ideal and affordable way to get it, her disappointment in the apathetic response to her “Year of B12 Awareness” campaign in 2009, the impact she made in the state of Alabama involving the governor of that state, how people can join her in educating others about Vitamin B12 deficiency, and who should be tested for Vitamin B12. If you’ve ever wanted to know about what’s so important about Vitamin B12, then this is the podcast for you!

Another excellent interview! I forwarded this to my family and friends. My in-laws and parents have had some health problems so maybe it is another thing they can check. It’s interesting she mentioned that children can be deficient because their mothers were also malnourished. I think this is something the modern world forgot. Ancient cultures provided for proper nourishment of newlyweds, women and children in order for their tribe to survive. Dr. Price showed it can happen in one generation, but I think we are seeing it in 2-3 generations of factory food. I find it sad that simple things like vitamins are missed by modern medicine. I’d like to see more research being done to understand the causes of all vitamin and mineral deficiencies (not just the ones with books written about them!). Some people say it all goes back to the health of the soil.

Thanks again for bringing another interesting topic!

    One more thing…..

Is it just me, or did she make it sound like the injury from being vitamin deficient was caused by the doctors? She mentioned a malpratice lawsuit of the Illinois nurse. The diagnosis prevented treatment to the point that the patient’s health deteriorated enough to sustain permamnent damage, but I don’t think the underlying deficiency was iatrogenic (doctor-caused).

We rely on doctors to diagnose patients properly and the law requires that they get annual training to maintain their license. I suppose there are legal definitions for lawsuits and what is required from doctors. Yet the responsibility for health belongs to the patient. I suppose this is why Jimmy has worked so hard bringing awareness about the USDA Food Pyramid. The average person might think he is following the best advice available only to end up malnourished and sick.

Very interesting about Metformin, I’d never heard that before.

  • pjnoir

Yes, Metformin, as wonderful a drug as it is, does create a B-12 deficientcy. This is well covered by Jenny at http://diabetesupdate.blogspot.com/
