‘Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show’ Episode 181: Dr. Barbara Berkeley Says People Should ‘Refuse To Regain’

Lifetime weight maintenance is the central theme of “Refuse To Regain”

Go to any bookstore and browse through the diet and health books section and you will find a dime a dozen books in there about what you should do to lose weight. Weight loss has become a multi-billion dollar industry because people have this idea that they can eat a certain way for a while to lose weight and then go back to their old way of eating with no consequences. But you and I both know this is a sure-fire way of gaining weight back and returning to those old habits that got us fat in the first place. It’s a ruthless and merciless cycle that people put themselves through time and time again.

But in Episode 181 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from Dr. Barbara Berkeley from Cleveland, Ohio who has written an incredible new book entitled Refuse to Regain!: 12 Tough Rules to Maintain the Body You’ve Earned! who outlines steps for people to follow AFTER they have lost the weight and are preparing to keep their weight managed for life! She’s been involved in this subject matter for two decades and says weight maintenance all comes down into two main central points: what you eat and how many calories you consume. Hear how these congeal into the thesis for her book.

On Thursday, we have quite a podcast to share with people who are fans of The Secret–the one and only Bob Proctor will be here along with Melonie Dodaro to discuss The LifeSuccess Perfect Weight Program. They focus on the mental aspect of losing weight that is too often missing from most weight loss programs. You’ll REALLY enjoy this podcast, so DON’T MISS IT!

Does this doc have a connection with low-carb?
The intro doesn’t say, neither does her listing on your doctors’ blog.

Your blog sometimes morphs from llvlc to general calorie counting and weight loss so I can’t always tell in advance what is low carb.

Thanks CC! Did you listen to the interview? She is VERY MUCH a pro-low-carb advocate as are virtually all of my past interview guests except for Dr. Dean Ornish. When have I “morphed” to calorie-counting for weight loss? Just curious. I’ve always consistently been low-carb all the way, baby!

I should have said, “general calorie counting” not just for weight loss, because of calorie counting in your FitCamp logs.

And also because you don’t necessarily agree with Taubes on exercise for weight loss- I just assumed that was from you believing your cardio exercise helped burned the fat.

Sure, I counted calories at FitCamp because I was asked to keep track of my calories to make sure I got in 2500 a day. Incidentally, that’s about how many calories I was getting prior to FitCamp, so I wasn’t really doing anything different from the norm. As for my disagree with Taubes, I wrote about how I believe the cardio exercise I did in 2004 during my 180-pound weight loss was instrumental in my weight loss success in my book. But that doesn’t mean I’m for calorie counting. THANKS for allowing me to clarify. :D

Thanks for this interesting interview, Jimmy. I will be following closely to see how it goes with your elimination of products from your diet. I am in the same place as you, trying to get this last bit of stubborn weight off. We might be so insulin resistant that we just can’t eat those things without gaining even though some folks can.

One comment on exercise. I heard Jonny Bowden say that exercise does lots of wonderful things for our bodies but it really is not effective as a weight loss method. However, he said, it is essential for keeping the weight off. I also heard on NPR one morning that there is research that says that exercise (and they were talking about walking in particular) helps stave off Alzhimer’s because your brain is working in the background when you are not even aware of it, telling your body what to do, like move that foot..now that foot. This helps stimulate the brain. That is good enough of a reason for me to exercise even if it doesn’t make the pounds drop off. I’ve been on hiking trips where I’ve hiked up to 36 miles on a weekend and come home and have gained 3 pounds. LOL Folks say that it is all muscle weight but my body does not look any different. So I think I’ll go by Jonny’s premise and view exercise as good for lots of systems in my body but not the vehicle by which I am going to lose weight. That takes dietary changes. Thanks again for all of your hard work. I think your shows are just as professional as the People’s Pharmacy (Joe and Terry Graedon – who are local to my area) which I also enjoy. Take Care, Maryi
