LCC (Episode 41): Joey Cardillo And Sarah Ballantyne Defend Meat As Healthy

QUEST BARS HAS A BRAND NEW NATURAL LINE:

NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: http://cmp.ly/3

In Episode 41 of “Low-Carb Conversations With Jimmy Moore & Friends,” we’ve got friends to help us talk about some of the most recent health headlines looking at things from a low-carb perspective My co-host Mindy Noxon Iannotti and I are joined today by Joey Cardillo from “Versatile Health” and Sarah Ballantyne from “The Paleo Mom” blog to discuss some pretty enticing stories, including whether eating meat is daring or dumb (or neither!), whether grass-fed cows are really better than grain-fed, antibiotics still being used in the fattening of cattle and whether our Paleo ancestors thrived from eating cooked meat. We’ve got some real gems in this lineup for you today along with a couple of yummy recipes–Paleo Chewy Granola Bars and Bomb Diggity Bison Chili–directly from our guest friends. So pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and let’s talk about what health low-carb living is all about!

Listen to Joey Cardillo & Sarah Ballantyne defend meat as healthy:

  • The Top 10 Searched Diets for New Year’s 2012
  • Joey has “been through the cycles of the diet trends” over the years
  • He was never overweight, but never felt like he was at 100%
  • How the Atkins diet made him aware of the impact of carbs on him
  • The Paleo diet that produced “pretty crazy” results for him
  • Being covert in sharing the message without using “low-carb”
  • Sarah had “a really long challenge” with her weight and health
  • She was on a low-fat, calorie-restricted diet as a kid
  • This “vicious cycle” made her gain weight yearly until her low-20s
  • She lost 100 pounds reducing her carbohydrate intake and felt healthy
  • There were still health concerns, including adult onset asthma
  • She took steroids that caused her to gain 50 pounds in 6 weeks
  • Her weight was 235 at her wedding which was “just crushing”
  • When she was pregnant she got gestational diabetes and high BP
  • She tested her blood sugar and it clicked she needed to be low-carb
  • With a myriad of health concerns, she discovered the Paleo diet
  • She was “taken by the scientific rationale” of Paleo
  • The change in her health from eating this way was “revolutionary”
  • How this “way of living” had her “so excited” for the first time
  • She created her blog to share recipes and tips she’s learned
  • “Meat eaters – you are daredevils or dumb. Or both”
  • The article was written by a vegetarian (gee, what a surprise!)
  • The study the author cited was about processed meats only
  • There have never been any grain-fed to grass-fed meat studies
  • It just makes sense to stick with the high-quality meats if possible
  • The science referenced actually showed meat gives you benefits
  • People who don’t understand science and report on it are the problem
  • “Are grass-fed cows better for the earth?”
  • This seemed like a “defense by the meat industry” of their products
  • The “narrow argument” to convince people to eat conventional meats
  • Mindy’s co-workers don’t understand why she got a 1/4 cow
  • You don’t need to eat as much grass-fed meat to feel satisfied
  • How eating a burger patty at a restaurant isn’t as filling
  • Methane explosions in the ocean that release more methane than cows
  • The methane argument is “funny” because it’s ludicrous
  • Just let a cow live for how they’re supposed to live
  • “The Failure of the FDA: Why We’re Still Using Antibiotics on Livestock”
  • It seems the FDA “totally dropped the ball” on this issue
  • What unintended consequences come from consuming cows on antibiotics
  • Bacteria will become resistant to antibiotics because of this
  • “Cooked Meat Gave Ancestors An Advantage”
  • A study that showed cooked meat allows you to use nutrition properly
  • The unwinding of proteins when you heat them up
  • Mindy says she is going to “continue to cook my food”
  • Sarah’s Paleo Chewy Granola Bars recipe
  • She had to develop this gluten-free bar for her kids
  • Joey’s Bomb Diggity Bison Chili recipe

Please.  Someone get real.  In the economy we are now in, (and please Obama, stop blaming Bush), most of us just can’t afford expensive grass fed beef.  God bless you if you can.  But I’d bet my retirement checks most cannot.

Someone please give a shout-out for conventional meats WHICH THE MAJORITY OF THIS POPULATION eats.

      Thank you.

There are creative ways to make it affordable if you talk to your local farmer about it. Go to http://www.eatwild.com to find one near you. If you still can’t afford the GF beef, then do your best with what you can afford. The main idea is to eat as well as you possibly can. And grain-fed beef is better than Raman noodles and Mac & Cheese.
