I’ve Been Invited To Appear As An Interview Guest On The CNBC-TV Diabetes-Focused Show Called dLife

The half-hour dLife program airs on Sunday nights at 7:00PM ET

Right now I am staying in a hotel in Connecticut waiting for something pretty exciting to happen on Wednesday. Last week I was contacted by the CNBC television program called dLife to appear on the show as an interview guest to talk about my new book 21 Life Lessons From Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb. Cool! This opportunity just came completely out of the blue and I’m grateful for the chance to share how healthy low-carb living changed my life.

I was a little surprised a diabetes-focused TV show would be interested in hearing someone who is not diabetic, but this is something I am passionate about sharing with people suffering from diabetes. Carb control is the key to combatting this disease and I intend to make that point loud and clear during the interview. Although dLife isn’t explicitly supportive of livin’ la vida low-carb, their willingness to allow a message that runs counter to conventional wisdom to be shared is admirable.

Here’s what they said about why they invited me to appear on their show:

“While every story is unique, we believe your story and book will be informative and inspirational to our audience.”

A producer for the show called me on Friday and conducted a 45-minute pre-interview to get a gauge for how I would answer the questions that will be posed to me. He said I would be interviewed by a female physician who is no fan of low-carb diets and that the final segment would be about three minutes long. I’m sure they’ll shoot 15-20 minutes and whittle it down. I can’t wait, although television goes by super-fast! Wish me luck.

I’ll get back home to South Carolina on Wednesday night and I’ll give you more details about when to watch. Thanks for supporting the work I am doing on behalf of the healthy low-carb lifestyle. We ARE making a REAL difference.

Get ready for the old tired argument that low carb high protein diets will harm your kidneys and that your body needs carbs…Both lies. I was once on an Insulin pump and using massive amounts of humalog. I use NONE now because my lifestyle is low carb. I even ran a half marathon last year over the objections of several friends that said I couldnt do it. I will be running another one in Dallas in March. Type II diabetes can be beaten even when it is hopeless. It just takes exercise and low carb living. You can tell that carb friendly doctor to stop spreading her lies for me. I am one who has gone against the ADA and the idiotic crap they publish and healed my life…Don’t back down Jimmy, but please go armed with good info, she will pull out the cannons on you…

It wasn’t bad at all, Dusty. They were fantastic and treated me with respect for my views.

Very cool Jimmy! If the interviewer turns out to be hostile, have your studies handy and see if you can’t get your point across with facts.

I didn’t realize (until I read one of Richard’s recent posts) that the high carb advice for diabetics was originally based on the fact that they couldn’t easily test their glucose levels, so they had to err on the side of too much carbs rather than risk hypoglycemia from their insulin injections. Just accounting for the fact that it is now possible to measure blood glucose regularly means that overeating carbs is unnecessary. I wish the ADA would get with it.

Me too, Cynthia. One of the things I attempted to convey during the interview was give people a choice about what is best for them and encourage them to do that. The one-size-fits-all approach that is currently being used is NOT working.

I was told by my diabetic educator that I needed 195 gms of carbs a day. I told her that was too many carbs and that I couldn’t lose any weight. So after 4 years of this diet and continued weight gain I took matters into my own hands. I have lost 85 lbs and my doctor has taken me off my insulin pump and insulin all together. He asked what I was doing and I told him I reduced my carbs to 90 carbs a day and exercise. I was told by the doctor to continue what I was doing and tell my diabetic educator to take a flying leap. I’m now living Primal with carbs under 90. My labs are normal and my A1C is 5.3 For years carbs were killing me.

Way to go Daid! I’m so very proud of you.

Good for you, Jimmy! Keep spreading the good news, and confronting the lies and misconceptions.

    ALWAYS Kent! Always!

    Howdy,

Two years ago my New Year’s Resolution was to stop taking all Prescription drugs. I am a type 2 diabetic. I was taking 5 medications for: blood sugar control, high blood pressure and Cholesterol. These medications cost $550 per month. One medication alone (Byetta) was $350! None of these medications did anything to improve my health. Their side effects only made me sicker. I am now much healthier and have much better of my diabetes by Living La Vida Low Carb and exercise. That’s the ticket.

    AWESOME Carl!

Congratulations. You’ve helped so many people. This is a chance to help even more.

Thanks Kathy! I certainly hope the message can continue to spread about livin’ la vida low-carb.

Jimmy will the interview get posted on the internet so that people in the rest of the world can view it as well?
What a great opportunity, but also quite scary, these interviewers know how to slash and burn!!

The interviewer was a complete gentleman and very professional. I thought it was going to be an MD (that’s what they said in the pre-interview), but it was a broadcaster with Type 1 diabetes instead. I don’t know when it will air on television, but it should be available on the dLife web site once it does. And you know I’ll post it right here on my blog when it does. :)

That’s quite a feather in your cap, Jimmy!

I was under the impression that the founder of dLife was motivated by Dr. Bernstein himself. In other words, the founder is receptive to, if not an advocate for, low-carb eating in people with diabetes.

    -Steve

Hey Steve, he is! I met dLife founder Howard Steinberg on the set on Wednesday and he’s a super-nice guy. The first thing out of his mouth to me was, “Dr. Bernstein and low-carb living changed my life so I admire the work you are doing. However, I can’t be a champion for it on television just yet.” But at least he’s willing to have guests on like me and talk openly about carbohydrate restriction to a degree within the content of the show.

  • Dan (aka Renegadediabetic)

Congrats Jimmy. DLife tows the low fat party line, but does talk about watching carbs and allows the low carb viewpoint on the show. You’ll be joining Dr. Bernstein as a guest. You’ll probably encounter an adversarial interview, but it could be positive. You’re well armed against the anti-low carb arguments.

THANK YOU Dan! Dr. Mary Vernon has been on before as well, so I’m quite honored. They were SUPER nice to me and said I did an outstanding job answering the questions succinctly. Doing something like this really got the juices flowing in me to do my own television show someday. I’d love that!

  • Dan Jones MD

Your passion and personality will successfully help to illustrate that there is a LOW CARB OPTION that works for diabetics. The important word is option but this option is almost never given to the diabetics by their caregivers. You are the voice of the internet that is stimulating change. Without yourself and your low carb colleagues more and more diabetics will get maimed by the insanity that ADA and others promote.

As a Type 1 and a physician, I have tried it all. Low carb is the only thing that works.

We appreciate your work and look forward to the show

THANK YOU Dr. Jones! That is PRECISELY the message I attempted to convey during the interview and hopefully it comes screaming through loud and clear. Diabetics need to hear it.

  • Rosemarie

My husband and I are regular watchers of the Neil Cavuto show on Fox Business News…and imagine my surprise today when I saw YOU. Granted Cavuto mixed this up with economics but you still got your message out. And you did great! I’m looking forward to the next one.

THANKS Rosemarie! It was quite an opportunity even if it was a bit unorthodox. ENJOYED myself! Thank you for watching!
