Well, you know that I'm FOR diet soda being that my blog is entitled, I Love Diet Soda. I read about that study that says diet soda makes you gain weight and that's complete rubbish. How can something with no calories make you gain weight? Impossible I say! I drink diet soda because I love its taste and the fact that I can sip on it all day without worrying about excess calories.

BunnellFarm is absolutely correct! I am terribly addicted to carbs myself. I have tried to get over it several times, but I have let carbs back in for one reason or another every single time. And I weigh almost 330 pounds to prove that.

As for Katiep saying, "I agree that there are some wicked pleasures in life that you just have to have or you will go crazy!", that is one of the most reckless statements in modern history. Why not just make it include things like illicit drugs, promiscuous sex, or something else? Follow that logic and it's what you would eventually get.

Keeping the "Sugar High" alive and the "Caffeine High" alive at all cost(like the rats in tests) points inexplicably to the lifetime addictions to stimulants that most of we Americans face. Look at the "wrath" that rises when somebody speaks to forcefully against these addictions. They will tear you to shreds, you are not going to take away there sugar substitute or there caffeine, period. They will discredit you, they will scoff at you, they will jump all over you if that is what it takes but nobody is going to take away there goodies. Just like the person defending corn syrup ie, her job is at stake, and it's a fight to the end. Addictions are powerful forces and we will fight to the death for them, even if they are killing us. Look at heroin, tobacco, cocaine, caffeine, sugar etc etc. We become terribly addicted to all of these. Our "body chemistry" and all of the "why's" of this are far to little understood and far to little studied.

I gave up diet sodas as a staple a year ago in March. I say a "staple" because I used to drink upwards of a 6-pack of 12-ounce cans of soda a day. I did switch to almost exclusively non-aspartame soda about 3 years ago.

I do drink diet soda on occassion now, but it's maybe one or two a week. I've grown so accustomed to drinking almost only water and unsweetened iced tea with lemon now.

No, I didn't notice any difference in weightloss or the way I felt or anything else by switching off the diet soda habit...at least not in a month or two time. But I have been able to lose more weight this past year. Did losing the diet sodas have some much bigger-picture, longer-term effect (in addition to the omega balancing and supplement adjustments)? Honestly, I don't know.

My biggest concern with the soda, however, was the constant bombardment of phosphoric acid. What was all that constant consumption of phosphoric acid doing to me in the long run? I'd rather not find out the hard way.

I made the change and I'm glad I did. I'm eating more paleo now than ever before (no diet sodas a million years ago) and reaping the benefits in both weightloss and general health.

-David

You know, I've never understood the argument that drinking diet sodas or eating foods with artificial sweeteners in them will cause you to CRAVE sugar. That's not been my experience at all.

The reason why I consume these products is BECAUSE I don't want sugar anymore. In other words, they give me just enough of that "sweet" taste that my palate desires and I'm satisfied.

While I applaud people who can give up both sugar and artificial sweeteners, I think most people would go batty on that kind of exclusionary diet. Especially for those of us who were sugar junkies, things made with Splenda are a God-send!
