I'm not Gary Taubes, but I do think I can articulate why the low-carb supporters disagree with Dean Ornish on whole grains. And it all comes down to basic metabolism.

Just as sugar is nearly instantly metabolized by the body as sugar and spikes blood sugar levels, so too do the excessive carbohydrates that are found in the so-called "healthy" whole grains.

Although they do not enter the body as a simple sugar, the body responds to these carbohydrates in much the same manner when blood sugar spikes and the resulting insulin rush hits. This is an unhealthy place to be in as I have demonstrated in study after study here at my blog.

Here are just a few:

http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com/2007/07/study-high-carb-diet-leads-to-advanced.html
http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com/2007/06/high-carb-diet-raises-insulin-levels.html
http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com/2007/05/study-high-carb-low-fat-diet.html
http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com/2007/01/study-high-carb-consumption-leads-to.html
http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com/2006/10/study-high-carb-foods-lead-to-kidney.html

There's just too much evidence that a high-carb diet, even one with lots of whole grains, is not an ideal way to manage your weight or health. That's why I'm livin' la vida low-carb for life!

Ornish and Taubes agree that sugar and flour are bad for you. They don't agree about whole grains. Is there any research on that, one way or the other?

Peter Silverman

This "study" is a scam. Thanks for the in depth analysis. Oh well, if it makes Dean Ornish happy, what can I say? :)

One question. Based on the following quote, are they saying that it's better to meet some arbitrary percentage of fat, protein, carbs, red meat to white meat, etc. rather than get all your essential nutrients?

"One of the unexpected findings is that the 2005 USDA Food Guide Pyramid, the current government recommendation, fared significantly worse than the New Glucose Revolution, Weight Watchers High Carbohydrate and Ornish plans," Dr. Ma noted. "The USDA dietary guidelines were originally devised to prevent nutrient deficiencies and it's clear that we need to modify or rebuild the pyramid to look into cardiovascular disease prevention, as it is the leading cause of death and disability for Americans. Americans deserve a better dietary guideline and recommendation."

Just remember, doctors 'practice'! The rest of us have who have jobs can't get by with 'practicing', we'd get fired, or if we were a business owner we'd go out of business. I'm a plumbing contractor, but if I 'practiced' fixing customer's broken plumbing, I wouldn't have any customers.

Anyhow, these people choose to ignore the facts and preach the fables. They got here just a little bit too late to convince me that LC doesn't work...and work well. In just 3 short months, my health is light years better than it was when I was eating high-carb! Tons more energy, the brain fog is gone, no indigestion, cholesterol and triglycerides going down, less fatigue, eating healthy real foods and just in a better state of overall health.

The proof is in the pudding! Oops, sorry, I forgot we don't eat pudding! But, how can one argue with the thousands of LC success stories. They just flat out ignore them.

Long Live Low-Carb!

Ron, aka The Former Donut Junkie
