Fun-Filled Friday: TV Appearance, Local Love, Gladys Hardy, Kirk Cameron Witnessing, And Reusable Toilet Wipes?

Friday’s here! WOO HOO! I know it’s just another day, but Friday gets me excited because it marks the end of another week as the weekend gives me a chance to rest, relax, and recharge for a new week. Tonight I’ll be going down the road a little bit with some guys from my church for our annual men’s retreat to get fed spiritually and build brotherhood with other guys. It’s gonna be great!

Here are this week’s “Fun-Filled Friday” stories for you to chew on (they’re low-carb!):

Last week, I told you about my opportunity to be on LIVE television in my local area of Greenville/Spartanburg, SC. It happened on Sunday morning at WYFF-TV and weekend host Kelly Coakley did an AMAZING job with the two interview segments. I felt awful that morning because I woke up with a nasty cold, but it turned out pretty good despite my illness. Kelly said this was the best Sound Off South! interview she’s conducted. What a high honor! See for yourself my local TV fame:

Speaking of getting attention locally, a Spartanburg, SC-themed blog called Spartanburg Spark focusing on all things about the town affectionately referred to in our area as “Sparkle City,” decided to feature my blog on their local blog listing. However, it wasn’t an easy decision for blog author Steve Shanafelt to make.

“I’ve been on the fence about adding to [my local blogs] list for a few months now–Jimmy Moore’s Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb. As you can probably gather from the name, the blog and site is dedicated to documenting and promoting the low-carb diet and lifestyle. While the site is definitely promotional and commercial–Moore sells all kinds of low-carb stuff on the site–he frequently posts something of interest to a broader readership.”

Well, THANK YOU Steve for seeing that my blog is diversified enough to appeal outside of a small niche market to be worthy of inclusion on your list of local blogs. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing to promote the message of healthy living to the people of Spartanburg.

Shifting gears a bit, I must be one of a small handful of people who had never heard of a sweetheart, opinionated, little old lady named Gladys Hardy. If you’ve ever had a grandma who had something to say about EVERYTHING, then you’ll relate to Gladys. In fact, she called the Ellen Degeneres Show a couple of years ago to offer up suggestions for Ellen to improve her show and has now become a staple guest via telephone on the program. Here’s the video that got it all started and it will have you in stitches!

Speaking of loving Jesus, one of the most endearing heartthrobs of the 1980s was Kirk Cameron because of his role as Mike Seaver on the popular television show Growing Pains. Well, now Kirk is all grown up and is boldly sharing his faith in the Lord while still using his acting talents in films like the theatrical version of the book Left Behind and the 2008 hit Fireproof (if you have not seen this movie yet, get yourself a copy and watch it with your spouse–a REAL love story with a message out of Hollywood!).

Kirk has gotten bold in sharing his testimony with just about anyone anywhere as you’ll see in this clip of him talking about God with some gang members in Southern California (this is absolutely amazing!):

Finally, in the “SAY WHAT?!” department, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw something called reusable toilet wipes from a company called Wallypop. The purpose is for “supporting a natural lifestyle” by people who ostensibly think using toilet paper is bad for the environment. REALLY? Has it gotten THAT bad that we have to resort to something like THIS?!

Here’s what the wipes look like for those of you who are interested:

The company claims these $11-20 per dozen reusable toilet wipes are a lot more comfortable and soft on your bottom, economical, and don’t stink.

“They don’t go into a sealed container. They go into a little (lidded) garbage can in the bathroom. Many people use a wet bag. There is no odor.”

I won’t take your word on it because I’ll be sticking with my conventional toilet paper, thank you very much! Would you change to a livin’ la vida reusable toilet wipes lifestyle? I’m curious to hear what you think!

    Excellent interview, Jimmy.

    Fireproof is a must see for every married couple. I am curious as to what the reaction of non-Christians would be to this excellent movie. Have you talked to any non-Christians who have seen the movie?

    I haven’t personally, Lewis, but I’ve heard stories of reconciliation happening after people have gone to see this movie.

    Great job in the interview and more importantly great job landing it. Has the station received any feedback yet?

    From a non-Christian that kirk cameron clip was pretty amazing.

    THANKS Matt! The aftermath of the TV appearance has been neat–people who saw me have walked up to me and commented on the interview. Even people I don’t know! Plus the blog saw a traffic increase and my e-mail box has been filled with questions from people in my own area who wanted to know more about low-carb living. They came to me to do the interview because WYFF recognized the work I’m doing in their own backyard.

    I appreciate your feedback on the Kirk Cameron video. It’s a great lesson for anyone to heed about speaking your convictions in a passionate, but non-threatening manner.

    I have to laugh at the reusable toilet wipes. From the headline I was picturing something for cleaning the toilet, and was not expecting it to be a replacement for TP!

    The singer Sheryl Crow has a campaign going to get everyone to use just one (or two, if *absolutely* necessary) squares of TP per visit. All I can say is ICK – guess I’m not going to help her save any trees. Maybe the Wallypop people should contact her people… ;-)

    Im sorry but I did not like the kirk cameron video. It reminds me why I dont go to church. He had his speech and memorized it well, but the guy behind him had questions and was totally ignored. Not once does he stop and listen to the man and help him. I cant tell you how many crhistian churches I went to that it happened to me

    I’m sorry you didn’t like the video, Michele. I think Kirk was focused on sharing with the one guy and didn’t want to get off on any wild goose chases with the questions the other gang members had. That’s not to take away from the validity of their questions, but Kirk’s focus for this discussion was on the bald man in front of him. A witnessing opportunity should ideally be a one-on-one conversation to allow the free flow of ideas and thoughts. Perhaps Kirk could have asked to speak with each of them individually later on (and maybe he did).

    It’s okay to be prepared like Kirk was to be able to share intelligently as well as allowing room for the Holy Spirit to move in him to speak the words God would have this man to hear that day. He couldn’t just pull some of that stuff he shared out of thin air, so preparation with appropriate Bible verses and applicable stories makes sense. I’m sorry your experience with Christian churches has been the way it has. It just goes to show how much more work is left to do to reach people with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ.     Jimmy, I think you’ve missed the boat on the wipes. I can’t be sure, but those wipes are probably meant for little baby bums. Just look at the patterns. Again, I can’t be sure, but they are probably more comfortable for the baby (less chemicals) We just held our little ones like a football (bottom in front) and used good old soap and water and the bathroom sink).

    You looked great on the interview! Thanks for your dedication at spreading the word. Hope you’re over your cold too (wasn’t noticeable)

    I don’t get the reason why Steve Shanafelt was hesitant to add your blog to his list. Was it because it’s content is not specifically about your local area, or was he worried that he was promoting something controversial?

    I thought the same thing on the wipes, but they are promoting them as a replacement for toilet paper to allegedly “save the environment.” They even describe them on their web site as “family wipes” to replace the toilet paper in your home. I dunno, it seems more harmful to the environment to have to wash these toilet wipes in the washing machine more often than the paper that disintegrates in the toilet bowl before getting flushed into my septic tank.

    THANKS for your kind compliments on my interview. I had a lot of fun doing it and would love to be able to do TV often. And, yes, I’m feeling much better from my cold now. As for the local blog listing, I think he believed my low-carb message was too niche until he realized the appeal of my writings is much more broad and mainstream than he assumed it would be. That’s a high compliment. :)

    Hey, thanks for the link to our wipes. If you take the time to read the website, and not just the other blog posts full of rhetoric, you’ll notice that there’s no implication that toilet wipes save the planet, that we think TP companies are evil, or the like.

    Many of my customers are trying to protect fragile septic systems, and quite a few have personal health concerns that cause them to want to use something moist to wipe with.

    Personally, I KNOW that washing oneself with moist cloth gets one cleaner than trying to scrape off with thin paper.

    Kirk Cameron video was interesting. I’ve personally admired his decision to “come out” as a devout Christian and to avoid roles that did not allow him to act out his faith, despite what this has done to his career.

    I saw the Kirk Cameron video and I have to agree with Michele. I was initially intrigued by the video and I thought that the reason he brushed off the other gang member was because he wanted to be focused. But then I went to the site that appears at the end of the video, and saw Kirk Cameron and his evangelical business partner’s video interviews with other folks on the street and they did the exact same thing…even while speaking with just one individual, one on one.

    When the person being interviewed would attempt to ask a question, they’d brush it off and just repeat this speech they had prepared. When the interviewee would attempt to raise interesting points or attempt to engage in a discourse, they’d either cut the person off, place negative/insulting captions at the bottom of the video, of simply cut off the video tape. They claimed that God’s existence could be “proven”, yet surprisingly they never did so. As someone who grew up in the baptist church and spent summers at Bible Camp, I found this shocking and embarrassing.

    And by the way, there’s a reason God refers to it as “faith”. So insisting up and down that it can be “proven”, as if God is some object of man that can be understood by all…I just found this shocking.

    Also, using the fire and brimstone/scare tactics approach to bring people to the Lord is archaic and manipulative. In my eyes, if someone has to scare me into doing something, then it’s probably something that I shouldn’t be doing in the first place. Passing judgment (in a dodgy, manipulative manner, no less) on others is not only NOT our role or right as mere humans, it’s a complete turn off to those who are not of the faith (and to many of those who are).

    THANKS for sharing your thoughts, Misty. But actually this isn’t about Kirk Cameron at all because he’s a human who makes mistakes like the rest of us. It’s really about the need for a Savior who took it upon himself to come to Earth to die for the sins of the world. He didn’t have to do that, but He did it willingly out of love for you, me, and all of mankind. That’s why He is my Lord and I believe in Him by faith. Thank you again for sharing your concerns.
