Fun-Filled Friday: Smackdown, Keys vs. LaLanne, Exercise, Beauty, Great Sex For You, Twouble With Twitter, Gillespie

Hey guys and welcome again to “Fun-Filled Friday” here at the “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” blog. It’s been a busy week with the blogiversary contest ending and all that goes on with this little empire I’ve put together around the subject of low-carb living. And that reader survey I conducted showed me that a surprising number of you are fans of this here weekly post feature, so I’m happy to be sharing the neat and exciting dibble dabble of stuff for you today.

Although Christina Newman (aka “fastinggurl31″) is a raw foods and vegan advocate, I liked this video she did about a year and a half ago as a “smackdown” for people who keep dieting, losing, stop dieting, gaining over and over again. Her “you’ve got a problem” message is all about personal responsibility and I’ve blogged about this many times previously. Some say this kind of message is too harsh while others argue it’s exactly what is needed. What do YOU think?

So many readers send me stuff all the time to look at and sometimes comment on. What’s really funny is when they e-mail me a study they’ve seen reported on in the media asking me to blog about it and I already had days or weeks prior. READ MY BLOG and you’ll see if I’ve hit on what you’re sending to me. I appreciate you sharing, though.

One reader pointed me to this November 2007 blog post by the great Dr. Mike Eades from Protein Power (who along with his wife Dr. Mary Dan Eades will be joining us on the 3rd Annual Low-Carb Cruise to the Bahamas in March 2010) comparing two men instrumental in shaping health in America over the past 100 years–Ancel Keys and Jack LaLanne. Keys was the guy who basically vilified dietary fat and got public policy changed to reflect that (read Gary Taubes’ book Good Calories, Bad Calories or watch Tom Naughton’s FAT HEAD documentary for all the details). And Jack LaLanne has been an advocate of healthy NATURAL living–and that ain’t low-fat! Check out the difference between these two men and decide how YOU want to look as you strive to live to be 100 years old.

Pretty stunning to say the least! Kudos to Methuselah from the “Pay Now Live Later” blog who is back yet again with another cute YouTube video outlining what exercise was like for the Paleolithic man and how those same principles still apply in 2009. You’ll recall the Paleo Diet In A Nutshell (Part 1) I shared previously that detailed the dietary end of things for people eating this hunter-gatherer-styled nutritional plan. Now check out the new video focused on exercise and it’s not what you think:

Have you ever seen one of those big billboards with a made-up model and wonder how exactly those people looked before all the makeup and photoshopping of their image was done? This is one of the most stunning video transformations you’ll ever see and proof positive that the “image” of beauty around the world today is skewed worse than we even realize. THANK YOU to the Dove Self-Esteem Fund for bringing out the truth about this issue so little girls don’t have to grow up thinking they have to live up to some impossible expectation for being beautiful:

Did you hear about the pastor of a Christian church who got into hot water this week because of a sermon series he is preaching on sex? Pastor Bruce Cadle from the Melbourne, FL-based New Hope Church which meets in a local elementary school had fliers sent out to 25,000 households that asked “Is Your Sex Life A Bore?” and invited them to come to the church services being held at the school to “learn how to have the Great Sex that God created you to enjoy!”

Here’s Pastor Cadle preaching his message with feet coming out from under sheets:

There is outrage from the school district leaders and they’re threatening to kick the church out of the school, but Cadle says sex is something that God wants married couples to embrace as the beautiful thing that He created it to be–so it shouldn’t be taboo to talk about it in church. What do you say about it? Does Pastor Cadle have every right to preach on this subject or is it off limits because the church meets in a public school building?

All the world seems to be on Twitter now. I resisted the urge for a very long time to join this popular social-networking site, but I’m on there now with regular “tweets” throughout the day updating information about who I’m interviewing, what I’m blogging about, and interesting things that I feel like sharing. Heck, even Dr. Eades became an official Twitterer this week (and the man is like a machine pumping out at least 15-20 “tweets” a day! Subscribe to his Twitter account and you’ll see). I found this hilarious video on YouTube the other day called “Twouble With Twitter” and it made me spew all over my computer screen it was so funny. This is what happens when you take your Twittering to the extreme:

And finally I have a brand new video from my sugar-shunning friend from the land down under David Gillespie that outlines some truly frightening statistics about the state of health in the United States now compared to not that long ago. Pay close attention and you may need to watch it several times to get it all in. Sobering, sad, but oh-so-motivating to keep on livin’ la vida low-carb:

That’s all for this edition of “Fun-Filled Friday.” Feel free to comment on any or all of these topics today and there were quite a few good ones. Send me your FFF materials and you might just see it show up right here on a future Friday–e-mail ‘em to me anytime at livinlowcarbman@charter.net. Have an AWESOME weekend everybody and THANK YOU for making this blog a regular part of your life. It means more to me than you’ll ever know. SEE YA! :)

Although I have a Christian background (largely non-denominational and mostly self-directed), I am not presently a Christian, so I guess you can take my opinion with a big ole grain of salt, but…

I see two major conflicts going on here. One is about theology and the other is about use of public property.

Now if you’re a Sunday Christian who thinks religion is about what you believe and you abandon your purported faith the rest of the week (and by “you” I mean in the general sense, not a specific person), then there might be cause for offense if a minister puts on a class about how to have a good sex life. I mean, who’s this guy think he is, right, to control people’s lives the rest of the week? I see a lot of Christians thinking like this now, not to mention scads of other religious people. Personally, I blame hyper-rationalism and postmodernism (what I know of the latter).

But if you believe Christianity should be a way of life then of course one of the people you will consult about how to have a healthy sex life just might be your pastor/preacher/priest/minister. Why not? He or she is there to guide and advise you and presumably has a solid grounding in Biblical theology. And theology isn’t just about how you think or what you believe, it is also about what you do. I’m horrible about remembering where I read stuff in the Bible, but it says in there that faith without works is dead. Another way of putting that is: Walk your talk.

So from the theological point of view I’m totally behind this guy. Good for him. Americans are sadly under-informed about healthy sexuality, as we are about nearly every other aspect of human existence anymore. I’m not sure why that is but it really bothers me.

Now from the use-of-public-property point of view, whether it bothers me depends on whether the presentation was given during the school day. Obviously not. He’s running these workshops on Sundays when no young children are present. While I think some form of sex ed later on in school is vitally important for those kids who are getting no information about it at home, I also support the right of parents to opt their kids out of those classes and I support the ultimate right of parents to teach their children the facts of life (sexual or otherwise) as they see fit. This is a vital part of the transmission of human culture that we are losing thanks to extreme state intervention. And this is a dyed-in-the-wool leftist telling you this, by the way. (Pick your jaw up off the floor, Jimmy. LOL)

So in that sense if parents are irked about any flyers at the *school*, then fine, the school district can deal with that. But it doesn’t require evicting the church. It simply requires a change in advertising policy. Meanwhile, community residents have the right to use the school buildings before and after school hours because their taxes pay for those buildings. I believe the U.S. Supreme Court has addressed this over and over again. It should be a no-brainer by now.

And I just wanna ask: What IS IT with Brevard County? Is the county run by atheists or something? Do a Google search on the Church of Iron Oak. They were a Wiccan church in the mid-90s who were harassed by Brevard for holding services in the home of the high priestess. It’s almost like Brevard’s government is severely allergic to any form of religious expression not occurring in a building set aside for that purpose only. They need to get over themselves.

Jack LaLanne is famous for touting a mostly vegetarian diet. He ate tons of fruits and vegetables (emphasizing raw), whole grains, fish and egg whites. His diet was low fat.

Here’s a direct quote from him: “Look at the average American diet: ice cream, butter, cheese, whole milk, all this fat. People don’t realize how much of this stuff you get by the end of the day. High blood pressure is from all this high-fat eating.”

  • Christina

I haven’t seen this particular Jack LaLanne’s quote on diet, but this YouTube video suggests that he had a bigger problem with sugar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJVEPB_l8FU.

He also was a proponent of fresh food and not processed foods. Breakfast and dinner recommendations included proteins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuW3RfWJ1H0&NR=1

What does your sex life have to do with your eternal soul? What if I go home and my sex life is still rotten, even two, three, four years past the time I hear this “sermon-ar”? I’m still a poor, miserable sinner who needs to repent and hear the good news of the Gospel. It is all I need.

Or what if I’m single? Or a parent who actually wants to have my child with me in the worship service? How do these sex sermons benefit those people? We came to worship, to hear God’s word and receive the promise of his forgiveness.

Support for Godly living is definitely something that is needed, but these sermons on how to live a better life and how “giving myself over to Jesus” is going to make everything in my life better is misleading to even the most learned Christian, not to mention those in whom the Holy Spirit is still working.

What we need on Sunday week after week is the Gospel. These sermon-ars are just a way of enticing people (tickling ears!) and they mask the real word of God. If people aren’t coming because they know they need the Gospel, then the church is wasting its time.

    GREAT COMMENTS, LB!

    Hi Jimmy!

Thank you so much for posting my vlog to your famous blog site. Yes I am a vegan and I do enjoy vegetarian food. You might be surprised to know that I have nothing against the low carb movement especially in the maintenance phase. I am against processed junk food & meat that is injected with fillers etc . If someone is eating organic meat, veggies, fruit , organic dairy and a small amount of whole grains they are eating better than most Americans. I am against fake food and I am pro-real food. If the low carb life style works I say do it! Health is more important the diet dogma! Different Diets work well for for different folks. I am glad you like my video. You might enjoy my latest “They want you fat” Much love to you and continue to educate the public about real food!

    Christina

FINALLY! We have a sense of sanity from someone who disagrees with low-carb. Your philosophy is so refreshing Christina and it mirrors mine when it comes to diet. Find what works for you and then do it! CONGRATS on your success and I’ll keep watching your YouTube videos. My wife Christine and I love making some of our own at http://www.youtube.com/livinlowcarbman. SEE YA!
