Fun-Filled Friday: Halloween, Pumpkin, Big Fat Fiasco, Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons, Fan Club, Gospel Ship

BOO! Yes, this is a special Halloween edition of “Fun-Filled Friday” today with the sugar-filled holiday coming up this Sunday. My church is having an event called “Trunk or Treat” on Saturday night where upwards of 2000 kids will walking around from car to car (trunk to trunk) to get candy in a safe environment. This is always a double-edged sword for me every year because I support the outreach efforts of my church but the idea of all those kids getting loaded up with high-fructose corn syrup infested candy is just disgusting to me. In the end, it’s the responsibility of the parents of those kids to determine what their dietary choices should be and not mine. They’re probably not going to eat a healthy diet at home anyway whether we have this event or not. It still sickens me to no end. Maybe we could cast a low-carb spell on Halloween this year. Couldn’t hurt!

Oh, for all of you witches who have cell phones, you have been fairly warned:

Somebody had just a little too much creative fun with that one. GOOD STUFF! One of my favorite things related to Halloween is pumpkin carving because there are some remarkable works of art like these:

Love it! This is just absolutely amazing. Speaking of AMAZING, my low-carb blogging buddy and funnyman Tom Naughton, whose FAT HEAD documentary is one of the most entertaining and informative films on healthy low-carb living ever made, had gone on the speaking circuit with a fabulous speech called “Big Fat Fiasco.” This is well worth your time to watch from start to finish because Tom infuses his trademark humor and ability to make the complex understandable. You’re gonna enjoy this!

WOW, go Tom! This is the kind of information that needs to get out to a highly misinformed public ASAP. Something tells me this could be the groundwork for a FAT HEAD 2 at some point. Keep spreading the truth, Tom! Can’t wait to have you share more with us on The 4th Annual Low-Carb Cruise to Jamaica in May 2011. I can’t wait!

One of my favorite television shows is the CBS comedy Big Bang Theory about a bunch of geeky science nerds and a ditzy blonde. You just have to watch the show to see the chemistry between the characters Penny, Leonard and the star of the show Sheldon. One of the catch phrases of Sheldon is a simple one-word exclamation “BAZINGA!”:

Jim Parsons is the actor who plays Sheldon and he does such a fantastic job that he won an Emmy for his performance. Here’s an appearance he made on Sesame Street talking about the word “arachnid”:

Can you imagine if he did this segment in his Sheldon character? HA! And here’s one more video of Jim Parson playing 30 different characters in this cute video for Stand Up To Cancer:

“Carb-o-phobics who always avoid noodles…all you nerds who worship Captain James T. Kirk!” Hee hee! That hits everyone in the Moore household! Ahhhhhh, good times.

This week I introduced a brand new addition to my podcast for the biggest fans of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” and I’ve been grateful for the support of my fellow bloggers to get the word out about it:

- Dr. William Davis: “The Great Low-Carb Connector”
- Laura Dolson: “Jimmy Moore’s New Fan Club”
- Jennifer Eloff: “Become A Charter Member Of ‘The LLVLC Show Fan Club’ With This Special Offer By October 31″
- Kevin Brown: “Become A Charter Member Of ‘The LLVLC Show Fan Club’ With This Special Offer By October 31″
- Vaughn Sanders: “Interested in Health and Nutrition? This is the Best Podcast on the Subject”
- Nell Stephenson: “Check Out Jimmy Moore’s Podcast Fan Club!!”
- Brent Pottenger: Tweet about it
- Jolene Park: Tweet about it
- Mark Sisson: Tweet about it
- Stanley Fishman: Tweet about it

THANK YOU so much for all the support for my “Fan Club” and the response has been sensational so far! Remember, to get the special introductory charter member price of just $39.99 for 13 months, you need to sign up by 11:59PM this Sunday, October 31, 2010. There will be no new memberships accepted during the month of November when my podcast recording schedule kicks back into high gear and YOU will have the chance to ask questions of my guests slated for early 2011. Additionally, there are transcripts of popular past interviews, regular behind-the-scenes news updates about the podcast, and snippets of not-yet-aired interviews all awaiting you when you join the “Fan Club.” If we miss you after the deadline passes this weekend, then you’ll have another opportunity to sign up beginning December 1, 2010 when the site officially launches in full force. Thanks for supporting the work of my podcast.

Here are a few news items of interest that I wanted to pass along:

- The USDA has still not posted the transcript of the meeting where testimony was given by special interest groups and people like me. They promised at the July 2010 meeting that the transcripts of our remarks would be available in the coming weeks, but it’s approaching four MONTHS! With the official release of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines coming in December, it makes you wonder if they’re withholding the testimony details on purpose. Just sayin’!

- What if candy wasn’t as bad for you as people think? That’s what the New York Times would have us believe…tell that to soaring blood sugar and insulin that’s wreaking havoc on the health of the American people!

- Okay all you fat-phobics out there (and you know who you are!), you need to read Stanley Fishman’s column entitled “The Joy of Fat, Why We Lost It, and How to Get It Back” to see the error of your ways. You can thank me later!

- Wanna hear from a couple of average, everyday low-carbers? Well my friend and fellow low-carb podcaster Dr. Robert Su recently had Misty Humphrey and Mary Titus on for a Listeners’ Low Carb Health Roundtable on his “Carbohydrates Can Kill” podcast. I know both of these ladies quite well since they are fans of my blog and podcast, too, so it was neat to hear them speak about their low-carb experiences. I’ll be appearing on an upcoming episode with Dr. Su and a couple more of your fellow low-carb enthusiasts soon.

- Watch out! The first trans fat citations were handed out in Baltimore this week and the slippery slope has begun. How soon will they apply this same measure to saturated fat? They’ll be in for the fight of a lifetime if they ever try that!

- Wanna see the “50 Best Blogs for the Low-Carb Lifestyle” that was published earlier this week? Check out who made it at #1?

- USA Book News announced the winners of their “Best Books 2010″ Awards this week and look who came out as the winner in the “Health: Diet & Weight Loss” category? It’s none other than the low-carb book The Stubborn Fat Fix by registered dietitian Valerie Berkowitz who along with her husband Dr. Keith Berkowitz will also be joining us on the Low-Carb Cruise next year. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

- This column published in Shine exposes the double-standard that happens against women with curves and their career. It’s terrible that a perception like this still exists, but it does.

- U.S. News And World Report laments the failure of an obesity/diabetes drug leaving fewer options for those afflicted with these conditions. Ummm, I have a bright idea, why not choose a NON-drug therapy like livin’ la vida low-carb to control these issues? Are we really so dependent on a pill being the answer for all of our problems now?

- You think Dr. Mehmet Oz doesn’t know about the work I’m doing here at my blog? Check out the first paragraph of this recent column he wrote where he uses my famous catch phrase for low-carb living. HA! And to think he and his people act like they don’t know who I am when I contact them requesting a podcast interview. Yeah right!

And finally today, I thought I’d take you back in time to a rare recording featuring lots of classic voices–most notably Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Michael Murphy, and others–singing an inspiring song called “Gospel Ship”:

Good times! That’s it for this edition of “Fun-Filled Friday” and I hope you have a fun and safe weekend. ENJOY your Halloween activities and don’t forget to vote in next Tuesday’s elections which looks to be quite interesting in American history. We’ll see what happens. THANK YOU for reading and we’ll be back again soon. SEE YA!

Jimmy, I want to thank you for posting the youtube presentation by Tom Naughton. It was so informative and I wish everyone could see it! By the end, I was almost in tears when he was asking what the world would be like now if not for… everything!

I posted it to my blog, the Atkins Community Forum and to Facebook.

Congratulations on #1, Jimmy. It’s 10/31 so I better sign up for that fan club tonight. Your podcasts have kept me company through many commutes to work.

What I love about this blog are the thorough, good-natured interviws with a whole range of experts, and how it’s led me to many areas of exploration that I never knew existed.

What I don’t love is how every bit of research supporting the low carb hypothesis is supported enthusiastically, while any kind of opposing ideas are trashed and there is little attention to the black swans that might lead to more light on nutrition. For instance, in the traditional Japanese diet people ate rice all day long and didn’t get fat or diabetic or heart disease. This isn’t a study of twenty people whose blood markers went a little up or down, but an experiment with 100 million people who turned out to live longer than any other culture. I don’t know why, but I wonder why. I still avoid rice among other carbs, but I think it would be good to ask why those rice eaters (and the other eaters of high carbs in healthy high carb cultures.) stay healthy. If we low carbers don’t look carefully at these cultures we’re making the same mistake that the low fat believers make in ignoring the Inuit and other healthy cultures that eat lots of saturated fats.

    • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

LOL! I appreciate your honesty, Peter, but I’ve never discarded anything that runs counter to low-carb…in fact, you know I’ve embraced it and questioned just as you have why it exists. I think most of this goes back to metabolic individuality where some people (and cultures) are better able to consume carbohydrates while others cannot. That’s why this nutrition subject is so darned complicated to figure out for many people.

Thanks Jimmy for the Tom Naughton links to his presentation “The Big Fat Fiasco” on YouTube. This presentation is a good fairly short way to get others to listen to the Low Carb benefits and how the American public has been bamboozled into believing that low fat is good for us. My son is taking these to his health professor at college. We are trying to convince her to read GCBC and this might break the ice for that. – David
