Fun-Filled Friday: Facebook, Twitter, AMRBC, SwapTree, Louis CK, FATHEAD, And Clooney-Flavored Tofu?

By now you know the drill for “Fun-Filled Friday,” so let’s just dive right in!

I don’t know about you, but the social networking sites are an outstanding way to get reconnected with old friends you haven’t seen in years. I’ll be celebrating my 20-year high school reunion this summer in both Pensacola, Florida where I grew up and lived until halfway through my sophomore year in high school as well as Bolivar, Tennessee where I graduated. On Facebook, I’ve found countless friends and familiar faces in ways that would have been unheard of just a few years back. I’d love to add you to my network of friends, so feel free to click on my Facebook page.

While you’re on Facebook, be sure to check out and join the official “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show Fan Group” that my podcast producer Kevin Kennedy-Spaien created, a Good Calories, Bad Calories support group, and one of my latest favorite groups, The Burger Brigade. It’s so much fun on Facebook, although this very clever and entertaining YouTube video from Julian Smith discusses some of the pitfalls of the common features on the site in his “25 Things I Hate About Facebook”:

Speaking of social networking, I just joined the Twitter generation, although I’m not as gung ho about it as I am Facebook. Maybe that will change with time, but Twitter just looks like a big waste of time to me. There’s plenty for me to do throughout the day without adding Twitter updates periodically. Anyone reading this who actually LIKES Twitter and can offer some compelling reasons for doing it? I’d love to hear what you think and feel free to subscribe to my Twitter updates.

Last Sunday morning was a very special day in the history of my local church in South Carolina. After exploding at the seams in attendance under the leadership of our senior pastor D.J. Horton, Anderson Mill Road Baptist Church needed a new building to accommodate the crowd. Sunday, March 8, 2009 was the first official Sunday service in the new building and I had my FLIP camera with me to document this AWESOME event:

In this recessed economy, there are plenty of reasons to look for ways to save money while still living your life. That’s why I was happy to find the web site SwapTree.com. This is an innovative new web site where you can instantly trade books, CDs, DVDs, and video games you no longer want for FREE. Simply list them on the SwapTree web site and their trade algorithms will instantly find everyone who wants those items and show you everything they are willing to trade. The best part is, you only pay for shipping, which using SwapTree’s label service means you never have to go to the Post Office. It looks like a really cool service, so CHECK IT OUT!

Speaking of the economy, I was encouraged by what comedian Louis CK had to say on The Conan O’Brien Show recently about the state of our country, perspective on what we consider “hard” times, and just how spoiled so many of us have gotten. If you missed this very funny rant and don’t mind getting a few of your toes stepped on, then watch the segment for yourself–it’ll have you rolling in laughter and make you think, too!

If you’re one of the few people on the planet who HASN’T seen the fabulously entertaining documentary film about low-carb nutrition called FATHEAD, then get yourself a copy ASAP! Anyone who has complained that Gary Taubes’ Good Calories, Bad Calories was too complex to understand will find this film explains it all very clearly in language and visualization that anyone can understand. Here’s a brand new clip from the DVD to illustrate this point:

And finally, we all know the members of the animal right, meat-hating group PETA love to come up with some really kooky ideas to get attention (remember this?), but now they’ve REALLY done it with their proposal to create George Clooney-flavored tofu. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk wrote a letter to Clooney (who I was able to work with as an extra in the film Leatherheads in 2007) wanting to use his sweat from a gym towel to flavor tofu. She wrote, “What would make tofu more attractive to people? I can see people having parties to try CloFu.” OH MY! And people wonder why PETA doesn’t get any respect anymore.

That about does it for this week’s “Fun-Filled Friday.” Have a SUPER DUPER weekend and send me something funny, quirky or downright weird for a future FFF post anytime by writing to livinlowcarbman@charter.net. SEE YA!

Jimmy, I’ve never had this happen before but I literally just spit coffee all over the place watching the conan clip. I am in shock, I always thought that was a saying but now I’ve got to find a towel. Thanks lol

Happy to make you spew, Maya!

    Jimmy,
Twitter is a great way to spread the lowcarb message.
I link to many of your posts and podcasts as a service to my followers. It sends 10-25 visitors to your site. My Twitter strategy is to give and then occasionally ask. The law of reciprocity says that if what I give is good, I will receive in return.
I am a PA and a wellness coach and work with patients who wish to improve their health. Weight management and improved fitness are keys to this.
Twitter will allow you to reach many more people who want what you have. use it to guide them to low carb sites that are beneficial to them and to some of your affiliates and sponsors that are beneficialt to you and them.
I am a new “big Fan” of yours and will continue to send you traffic as I believe you have an important message they need to hear.

THANKS so much, Bruce! I’ll be checking out your site often as well. :)

I couldn’t love Louis CK more if I were twins! I’ve been a big fan of his for a few years now. so funny.

Cheers to Louis CK! The average person today lives better than the “rich” did 100 years ago. My wife spent two years in Africa and told me that if people from her village were air-dropped into the poor section of Los Angeles, they would think they were looking at rich people.

And yet to listen to all the complaints, you’d think we were all on the verge of falling into a level of poverty straight from Dickens.

There’s a good book written by a French author titled “Anti-Americanism,” in which he examines the reasons people in so many countries don’t like Americans. One of the biggest: we are the richest, freest, most powerful country ever … and yet our media are constantly running stories about how tough life is here.

When you put things in the proper perspective, Tom, NOBODY in America should be complaining about their wonderful lives. But we all DESERVE more, right? HA!
