Fun-Filled Friday: Creepy Cat, MyWebWill, Taubes, Knock Knock, 700-Pounder, Sleeper, Shovel Snow, And Photo Game

I’m running late on this edition of “Fun-Filled Friday” (yes, I know it’s Saturday now!), but I couldn’t start off a brand new year without doing one of my favorite segments of the week sharing some fun and interesting stuff that may or may not be related to diet, health, and fitness. It’s an eclectic blend of this, that, and everything in between, so let’s start off 2010 with a bang! Here goes!

As the owner of four cats, I can certainly relate to the reaction of this creepy black feline:

You don’t mess with kitty when she’s acting like this. This guy obviously had her claws clipped because my hand would be a bloody pulp if I had done that. In fact, if my Muffin, Ginger, Smokey, or Peaches clawed me in just the right place, then I may need to use the services of MyWebWill:

It’s an interesting concept I’m surprised nobody else has thought of before now. Speaking of interesting, someone who is ALWAYS on point and tells the truth about high-fat, low-carb diets is Gary Taubes who was recently on ABC-TV’s Good Morning America with Robin Roberts:

I’m so happy to hear that the message of Good Calories, Bad Calories is still getting out there more than two years after the book was released. My favorite part is when he said, “I think saturated fat is probably harmless.” Robin reacted with a shocked “it’s HARMLESS?!” The AHA response was so typical…”living in the 1970s” as Gary said. Classic! Wanna see somebody who’s just a wee bit too enthusiastic about the role exercise and “burning calories” is to healthy living:

I admire his tenacity! Passion for what you believe in is something I highly respect. You can’t help but be moved by this dramatic reading of poem entitled “KNOCK KNOCK”:

WOW! That’s somebody who has dealt with life’s blows and overcome. Way to go man! How about the story of a woman who weighed in at 700 pounds and went on to lose over 500 pounds? Inspiring to say the least:

Awesome stuff! I hope and pray she continues this journey she has begun and redeems all those years she lost to morbid obesity. I recently received an e-mail from a reader who asked if I had seen the 1973 Woody Allen movie called Sleeper and I replied that I had not. I was born in late 1971 and never saw a movie until Star Wars came out in the late 1970s. My reader noted that there was a scene towards the beginning of the film that was relevant to low-carb, so I found it. This was utterly incredible!

How about that? Woody Allen was trying to be facetious I’m sure, but he hit the nail almost on the head (sans the hot fudge or cream pies). Maybe he should watch this video clip from Tom Naughton’s FAT HEAD documentary featuring Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades about sugar and starch:

Amen and amen! The truth speaks for itself! Now that we’re in the winter months and people across the nation are dealing with the “white stuff” (except for those of us in the South!), here’s an excellent video about the proper way to shovel snow:

Great stuff! Finally, I’m gonna leave you with a guessing game photo. Who is this?

(Several of you answered it correctly: President Barack Hussein Obama — looks like that first year in office has really aged him!)

The first person to e-mail me at livinlowcarbman@charter.net the full name of the person in the photo above will receive a FREE e-book copy of both of my books: Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb and 21 Life Lessons From Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb. GOOD LUCK and THANK YOU for reading my blog. HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and may 2010 be the best year ever!

That Knock Knock poem was powerful. Makes me appreciate having a good father figure (my stepfather) in the home during my teenage years. I also lliked the father’s message from prison to his son to not engage in victimhood, but to stand tall and claim his place in the world.

The 700-lb woman struck a chord with me. I have spent the past several years taking care of my mother at home. She was diabetic, super-morbidly obese, and bedridden. We don’t have many blood relatives and none in our city of residence, so the only real help I had was from ANGELIC neighbors and family friends. Keep in mind that I was working a full-time job during this whole period. I’d wake up to about 2 hrs worh of chores (in addition to getting myself ready for work) before leaving the house, and I’d have to leave my mother’s lunch in a cooler next to her hospital bed in our living room.

She went into kidney failure in October and on dialysis immediately. I finally decided to put her in a nursing home for much-needed rehab. Her bedridden-ness was detrimental to her. Keeping her at home did NOT benefit her at all, and it seriously wore me to the core. It was the overruling factor is sending my weight back out of control.

The dialysis has brought her weight from about 414 down to under 360. She’s still too caught up in her own feelings to appreciate what Im doing, but I told her that I intend her to stay in the facility until she’s walking and can do some things for herself at home, including getting into a car to go to dialysis. (She had planned to have me do it for her at home, but I declined.)

My mother’s health/mobility has been declining for some years, and after 2 hospital stays in 2007, the social worker at the hospital adamantly demanded that Ma go to a nursing home for rehab, b/c she could not see how I’d manage to singlehandedly care for a bedridden woman of my mother’s size. My mother was deadset against it. In retrospect, I’m glad I made the wrong decision back in 2007. The nightmare of the past 2 yrs (and the yrs before that, that lead up to the nightmare) have clarified my path and position. Everything worked out as it should.

Perhaps too much detail, but the lesson I learned from all this is enabling is a two-pronged problem – for both the addict and for the supplier. I had to stand up and take corrective action. Unlike the 700-lb woman’s son, I’m an adult, so I could take action he could not. I refuse to allow my mother to get worse, b/c other than the dialysis and her mobility problems (from the obesity), she could be living a relatively normal life. I hope, when she’s done being angry and blaming me for all of her problems, and when she’s back up moving around again, that she appreciates this as necessary for her and my wellbeing.

THANKS for sharing your story, OnPoint! I think in the end you will be thanked mightily.

I’m an avid fan of GMA and I did not see that interview! I can’t believe I missed it! I soooo hope that Robin and the others read Gary’s book. I am tickled to pieces to see him on the show and pray that it inspires many to check out his book.

    Thanks, Jimmy!

LOVED the Taubes Video! He is awesome!

Wow. I just linked here from Marks Daily Apple this is amazing. Those videos are great and really make me feel better after getting the bizarre stares from my relatives when I explain that butter and steak are not what kill me or make you fat! Thank you so much this is totally going in my favorites:)

That woman who lost the five hundred man, that is insane! And to think she lost a ton of it just my a change in diet. She didn’t exactly get much activity typing in chat rooms! I hope the rest of her life isn’t as attached to the computer.

That poem was amazing too. The African American community has really suffered over the last several years from a culture that accepts terrible father figures. It is so amazing to see a man stand up for the better of his brothers. I hope this kind of passion will spark among Americans and Europeans in general who too often diminish the harmful impact of divorce or even praise it. Think of Lance Armstrong. Everyone admires his achievements on a bike, no one docks him for trading in his wife for a newer, prettier model. And Tiger Woods, I’m sure will suffer from his idiocy for a year and then write a book, make millions, remarry and be totally ‘redeemed’ without ever coming to a place of mourning not just over getting caught but cheating in the first place.

I totally love the way Gary moves the fruit juice to ‘The American Heart Association’ side!

That was TOO FUNNY and totally appropriate!
