Fun-Filled Friday: Best Beatboxer, Another Taubes Video, CPSIA Hurts Kids, Smokey Snowball, And Old People Fun

Hey all you low-carb lovers of life out there, it’s time again for yet another thrill-packed edition of “Fun-Filled Friday” where I feature some things that have caught my attention that don’t necessarily fit within the mold of a low-carb blog–but I find them too interesting NOT to share with you my readers! I really have enjoyed adding this segment to my blog because it gives me a chance to share a little more about what interests me besides low-carb (although all things low-carb will ALWAYS pique my curiosity, too!). Enjoy this week’s post!

Back in the 1980′s, beatboxing took on a life of its own and I even dibble dabbled in it (and still do sometimes now) a little for the entertainment value. But nothing I’ve ever seen from anyone comes even close to matching the mindboggling talents that Dante Knight puts on full display in this video:

AMAZING! While he probably couldn’t beatbox “Mary Had A Little Lamb” for his life, Gary Taubes is certainly an excellent orator of the reasons why livin’ la vida low-carb is such a healthy way of eating. Here he is sharing about his amazing book Good Calories, Bad Calories on the “Getting Your Money’s Worth” program with Judith West:

You may or may not have heard about a piece of legislation called the Child Product Safety Improvement Act, aka CPSIA. It was passed into law on August 14, 2008 and the provisions took effect on February 10, 2009. According to my low-carb friend, mother of 11 kids, and children’s bookseller Valerie Jacobsen at her Bookroom Blog, the new law does not allow any product for children to be legally marketed or sold unless it can be verifiably proven that the product is lead-free and phthalate-free, including older children’s books. Even very trace amounts which do not cause harm to anyone are illegal to sell now that this law is in place.

Valerie is now leading a campaign called CPSIA Hurts Kids stating that this legislation harms the parents of kids who rely on the bookselling business to make a living and deprives kids from expanding their cultural horizons by reading these older children’s books. Jacobsen Books has been hit hard by this law and it impacts many other areas of the American economy because of the following provisions:

- children’s books, with conditional illegality for every children’s book printed before 1985
- pens, pencils and art supplies, with absolute illegality for every Snoopy and Mickey Mouse pen made for children
- dance, ice-skating and dressage costumes of all kinds, with absolute illegality for using crystal beads or rhinestones
- children’s clothing from socks to winter coats, with conditional illegality for all used and hand-me-down clothing
- toys and games, with especially heavy regulatory burdens for homemade toymakers and thrift stores
- educational supplies and equipment, with conditional illegality for most science supplies
- adaptive and special needs devices for disabled children
- bicycles and minibikes, with absolute illegality for many parts, most repair, for necessary features like tire valves–and for necessary safety equipment for children’s welfare

This means anything you sell in a yard sale is subject to the parameters of this law. There’s a lot more to this law than the members of Congress who voted on it even realize, so go visit CPSIAHurtsKids.com and show your support for the efforts Valerie is investing in getting this legislation revisited. I know she’ll appreciate any assistance you can give her.

Speaking of controversy, I had one happen earlier this week when I posted a video of my second to youngest of four cats named Smokey on YouTube. We had a big snowstorm roll through the South last Sunday and we got five inches of snow on the ground. In the midst of having some fun with the neighbor’s kid, my wife Christine took a video shot of Smokey who got outside in the snow on our deck. Little did we know she was in the right place at the right time to get one of the most hilarious video clips we’ve ever taped. I’ll share the video I made with slow motion and looping first so you can see what happened:

As you can see, she got right up after the snowball hit her and walked away. So we decided to have some fun with the video editing software with this clip.

While I thought this little incident that happened to Smokey was hilarious, not everyone did when I posted it at my menus blog. One reader wrote, “The cat video is horrible. I have a great sense of humor but Jimmy, it’s not funny. I don’t pick on you about your food or anything else. To each his own. But when a little defenseless cat gets pelted with a snowball it’s just not cool.” Okay, fair enough. I responding stating, “Sorry you feel that way about a 1/2 second video shot that I made dramatic with the slow motion. Smokey is fine…really, she is! It was funny.”

After thinking about my response, the reader wrote back, “You’re right. I guess I overreacted about the kitty! I have a big black cat who is always gets in trouble! The stinker is always tearing up or getting into something! She could handle a snowball or two.” Yep, that’s our Smokey, too–the #1 troublemaker in the house. Just to show everyone that our little Smokey was okay, I did a quick follow-up video showing she’s perfectly fine:

Finally, let’s end with a VERY funny video featuring what old people do for fun. This is part of an “anti-boredom campaign” for people looking for something to do. HILARIOUS!

That’s all I’ve got for you this week, but send me your “Fun-Filled Friday” material anytime to livinlowcarbman@charter.net. Have an outstanding weekend!
