Emerging Superfood Supplement: Açaí Berry Juice

The açaí berry is world-renowned for its amazing health properties

We’ve all heard of the so-called “superfood” claims that are out there, but what exactly makes them so “super” for you? Well, the fact is most of these foods and derivative supplements come from mostly naturally-grown fruits and plants that are especially nutrient-dense compared with other foods. They’re power-packed with disease-fighting vitamins, minerals, and other essentials to health that it only makes sense to do what you can to add them to your diet. One such superfood I want to tell you about today is açaí.

No doubt by now you’ve heard about açaí (pronounced “AHH-SIGH-EEE”) on shows like Oprah and in health magazine articles over the past couple of years. It’s still a relatively emerging superfood supplement, but even low-carb anti-aging pioneer Dr. Nicholas Perricone has written quite extensively on the benefits of adding more açaí to your diet. He named açaí as his #1 superfood above all others on a list of other foods you’d easily recognize in his bestselling book The Perricone Promise. Now that’s quite an endorsement!

This “crown jewel” energy fruit from the fertile Amazon rainforest in Brazil has one of the most unique flavors of any berry you’ve ever put in your mouth–it’s like having chocolate and berries mixed together. OOO LA LA! Behind the plump purple pigment of the açaí berry are healthy antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Let’s take a closer look at each of these:

ANTIOXIDANTS
Concentrated antioxidant vitamins which fight free radicals and premature aging are in doses ten times more potent than red grapes and up to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine. Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is a method used by the USDA of measuring antioxidant capacities of different foods and nothing else comes close to the açaí berry–15 times higher than blueberries and 20 times higher than raspberries! This will help you fight off all kinds of diseases and get energized like you’ve never experienced before.

AMINO ACIDS
A naturally perfect blend of essential amino acid complex along with valuable trace mineral properties that are vital to muscle contraction and regeneration–the perfect companion to your healthy resistance training routine.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS
The essential fatty acid content (omega 3,6, and 9) in açaí is similar to olive oil and is rich in oleic acid–which helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane to become more supple and keeps your hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors functioning more efficiently to cut down on inflammation from high-insulin levels. Unlike other berries, açaí has an exceptional content of fats, including the aforementioned oleic acid as well as palmitic acid and linoleic acid. Additionally, there is a high amount of beta-sitosterol in the açaí berries. The positive impact on your heart health from these fats cannot be overstated.

Other known health benefits of adding açaí to your diet include:
- Leads to a healthy immune system
- Effective weight loss aid
- Improves digestion from the fiber content
- Reduces pain and soreness
- Promotes healthy sleep patterns
- Increases energy and stamina
- Enhances your sex life
- Fights cancer and other diseases
- Lowers blood pressure
- Fights aging and inflammation
- Protects against heart disease

In a recent clinical study, just four ounces of a special açaí berry juice blend daily provided the antioxidant equivalent to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. For those people who think you are missing out on your fruits and veggies on your healthy low-carb lifestyle, taking this supplement daily would blow that notion to smithereens! And you can feel confident that you are getting all the nutrition your body needs without all the carbohydrates it doesn’t.

Unfortunately, you can’t just go down to your local supermarket and conveniently pick this stuff up, but there is a very delicious açaí berry juice blend that I’ve personally tried myself and LOVE IT! The taste is so good and it only has 4g carbs per 1-ounce serving. Take 1-2 ounces in the morning and 1-2 ounces and night and you’re good to go. It also comes in a gel option for those who wish to take it with their supplements as an alternative to the juice.

The juice “blend” is made with açaí as well as 18 other fruits including apricot, aronia, acerola, purple grape, passion fruit, camu camu, banana, lychee fruit, nashi pear, kiwi, pomegranate, prune, wolfberry, pear, bilberry, cranberry, blueberry and white grape. This gives you all the nutrition of these fruits without needlessly adding up the carb counts. The incredible synergy between these fruits make this açaí berry juice blend far superior to any singular fruit you could possibly eat.

If you’re ready to take your health to the next level, then consider adding the ultimate “superfood” to your diet with the açaí berry juice blend. I’d love to know what you think about this after you’ve used it for a few weeks. I’ve heard so many incredible health turnaround stories by people who started taking this stuff and I’d love to hear YOUR story, too!

  • Sonagi

The fruit with the highest antioxidant power is right here at home – aronia berries. Owing to their tannic acid content, they’re incredibly tart. Most people consume them only in sweetened jams or juices, which detracts from the healthful quality of the fruit. Aronia berries are rare in local markets as they are not popular or well-known. Lucky for me, my local farmer loves them and brings me two pints every week during the summer. I pluck them straight off the vine and pop them into my mouth like grapes.

I’ve never heard of these berries before, Sonagi! But they look very similar to the acai berries. THANKS for the info! :)

    Hi Jimmy,

Just wanted to say that my wife’s friend was all excited about MonaVie and tried to talk her into signing up and selling it. Kinda sounded like MLM to me.
Google MonaVie and read thru some of the hits before making a discission.

    Regards, John

Hey John, I suppose there are some bad apples out there who will try to aggressively market this stuff in their own self-serving manner. It happens in every area of business. But I can tell you I’ve personally tried the stuff and I’m considering becoming a part of the business for the discount as well as helping others who would like to enjoy the benefits it has to offer them. I’m not at all interested in any kind of multi-level marketing (trust me, if one more Amway idiot tries to get me to join them, I think I’m gonna scream!), but I am VERY interested in giving people information about products that will enhance their health goals. That’s what I think this stuff does. I appreciate your comments.

Good article. It is important for people concerned about health and nutrition to know the benefits of Acai.

THANKS John! I think the more people know about it and can begin feeling the positive impact of acai on their health, the better.

What recent clinical study? There are quite a few pdfs when you click on the link. Can you direct us to the study you are talking about?

    Are you a distributor?

THANKS Sue! The “recent study” I was referring to was the 5th PDF download on that link I provided in the post. This pilot and randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover study was published in the September 24, 2008 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. You can read the full study for yourself and see the conclusions the researchers made about the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the acai berry juice blend.

As for the question about whether I’m a distributor, the answer right now is no. I have great respect for what the company is doing to help people with their health and I am considering joining the business in spreading the word about their products. I stay so busy with everything I do with “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” that I don’t think I can properly invest the time into it I need to make it worthwhile. But I am happy to share good health information with my readers when I see it which is why I decided to blog about the product. THANKS for your feedback, Sue!

Tropicana has a raspberry acai juice blend which is quite good.

Interesting, Linda! Haven’t seen this in stores in my area yet.

  • Matt

I suppose the problem I have with this stuff is that you just don’t know how much of the juice contains the super food you are after. It would be nice to know the percentage, since it’s the selling point.

Also, 4g of carb per ounce is a lot, isn’t it? An 8-ounce glass of orange juice has 27g according to nutritiondata, so this is higher sugar than orange juice. Granted it has a more powerful punch of antioxidants, but the low sugar to me isn’t a huge selling point because of the very small serving size needed to generate that low sugar.

It is also very, very expensive….

I’m not sold … I’m still eating berries over drinking juice.

I hear ya, Matt! But I’ve researched this particular product quite extensively for several months now. According to a lecture by Dr. Alexander Schauss about the acai content question you have posed, in order to make a bottle of acai berry juice out of freeze dried acai you would need to take 1 part freeze dried acai and mix it with 100 parts of water. But instead of using water to hydrate their acai, MonaVie uses the acai juice to hydrate it. So you get the benifits of drinking an entire bottle of 100% acai when you drink a bottle of MonaVie.

Monavie puts as much freeze dried acai in MonaVie to equal an entire bottle of freshly squeezed acai juice! The rehydrated one-part freeze-dried acai juice and pulp to 100 parts liquid. MonaVie uses their juice to hydrate the acai instead of water. So not only are you getting the benefits of 100% acai juice, you are also getting the benefits of all those other juices I mentioned in this post.

Here’s a quote from Dr. Schauss himself about the process:

“When we now go to 1/100 (one part freeze-dried açaí powder/100 parts water), which is almost exactly what you’ve got in MonaVie by the way, and we bring that down to 1 in 100 dilution which almost brings it right back to the way it was in nature when we picked it out of the Amazon, we are lower then those cells that are untreated. It is actually now kicking in more powerful antioxidants to lower even that amount. So what we get here with the freeze-dried açaí being added rehydrated back into the MONAVIE is we’re getting potent, potent antioxidant activity in healthy human cells. And those are going to protect those cells from the free radical activity that’s occurring all around them all the time; which is one of the reasons why you get this quick recovery in a week or two that people have described.”

The overriding content of this product is the açaí berry with all the other ingredients added in miniscule amounts by comparison. As for the 4g carbs for each ounce of the juice, this isn’t really the same kind of product as orange juice. Obviously I agree drinking an 8-ounce glass of orange juice is idiotic because of the negative impact it would have on your blood sugar/insulin levels. But you’re not downing that much sugar/carbs into your body with this stuff. Just an ounce in the morning and an ounce at night is all you need. If you get all the benefits you need from just the small serving or two of the açaí berry juice, then isn’t the low-sugar aspect of it relevant? I think it is.

If you choose to eat berries, then I think that’s an excellent idea for you to do, Matt. But this açaí berry juice blend is a good choice for people who want to enjoy the benefits that this has to offer them without overloading their body with excessive amounts of sugar/carbs. THANK YOU for your comments!

  • Matt R.

    Hi Jimmy,

My wife and I went to a “juice tasting” last weekend for MonaVie. While we liked the juice, I don’t quite buy into all the health claims the presenters make, especially when they’re not educated on basic nutrition. I also think the price for this stuff is way too steep. So I did some research, and none other than Dr. Jonny Bowden has some sound answers.

THANKS for info, Matt! I am also quite skeptical of the supposed health claims that are made about this product just as I would be of any product that alleges to “cure” anything. That said, I think people should definitely be picky about what they choose to put inside their bodies for the sake of health and that includes MonaVie. If it works well within your healthy lifestyle choices, then use it. If not, then don’t. Thank you again for your comments.

    Hi again Jimmy,

I found this to be an interesting article that came out today.

‘Superfood’ Promoted on Oprah’s Site Robs Amazon Poor of Staple

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=ai8WCgSJrhmY&refer=home

Now that’s an interesting article about how the people from the Amazon where the berries come from are lacking in the protein they need from the popularity of it in America. THANKS for sharing!

  • Gracie

    Jimmy,
This might well be a great food for most, but I’m a type 2 diabetic, and to keep that under control I stick to 20-25 net carbs a day. Spending 8-16 of that allowance on juice wouldn’t leave me much for the rest of my foods. I think I’ll pass.
    Hugs,
    G

That was one of my concerns, too, Gracie! THANKS for sharing! :)

  • Livia

Well folks, here is the new wonderfood. If you are in your fifties then you will have seen a good many of them come and go. Aloe vera was just one of them and that one was – and is – also aggressively marketed by MLM-based companies. And the health benefits are enormous. Similar claims are made for OPC, Garlic, Guarana…you name it. While I am not saying that any of these things are bad for you there is no way in which a single food item can be a cure-all the way these people claim. So buy these products if you want to. But don’t let yourself be kidded by clever marketing.

Livia, I couldn’t agree with your assessment more! People should ALWAYS be skeptical of anything they hear about and do their own due diligence about it. It’s one of the central themes of what I have been doing and sharing for the past five years.

  • Maxwell Holmquist

    Hello,

Acai and Maqui are strongly unamerican.

We know Acai and Maqui berries properly processed possess on average more antioxidant kick than blueberries and cranberries.

So lets send more money out of the country to chase the next craze when blueberries, cranberries, oranges, and other antioxidant loaded foods are right here in the US?

Did anyone consider creating and concentrating these foods in marketable dietary supplements?

I am a berry producer in WI, MI, and MN. We do alright from season to season with domestic and North American sales. But it sure would be a boon to our industry if someone figured out how to produce a dietary supplement that equaled Acai and/or Maqui in antioxidant strength when properly concentrated.

Our economy continues to falter as we continue to get overly addicted on globalization.

The US is increasingly seen as a nation that makes little and consumes the rest.

So why not help American berry producers?

I think I could find hundreds of dollars for US berries over foreign ones.

    ~Max

I could not agree more with you Max. The unfortunate thing is it hasn’t happened yet.
