Extrapolated out a million times would read: 120 million people would need to be treated to prevent a million heart attacks, strokes or deaths!
Sounds a bit more impressive that way, no?

“nearly 120 people would need to be on Crestor for a period of two years to prevent a single heart attack, stroke or death”

Extrapolated out a million times would read: 120 million people would need to be treated to prevent a million heart attacks, strokes or deaths!<br

Elevated cholesterol is GOOD – In the MRFIT and Framingham studies, follow up papers concluded that the people with elevated cholesterol levels lived the longest.. In the Framingham study, which is supposed to be the golden goose for low fat diets, the results were embarrassing for the AHA to say the least..
For those participants who were over age 50, lower cholesterol rates were associated with a higher risk of death from CHD and all causes. In fact, for every 1 mg/dl drop in cholesterol levels, there was a 14% increase in heart related death, and an 11% increase in overall mortality. Other studies have shown that cholesterol is protective, especially against infection and INFLAMMATION. I get so made at the medical community.. it is their job to know these facts, to read these studies, and instead they rely on pharmaceutical reps and the medical journal articles whose authors have financial ties to big pharma. ARGGGH! If you want to read about just how damaging statins are, visit Duane Graveline’s site www.spacedoc.net or read his book “Lipitor, Thief of Memory.”
<i>THANKS Ellen! I'll see if Duane Graveline would like to do an interview for my podcast show.

The actual statistics are buried in the hype. Remember all the studies that DON'T make it to the publishers because they don't give the results that the pharma company wanted. Check it out. Leg and hip pain? Almost killed me before stopping this drug. My cholesterol is 191.

Believe me, after 35 years in the pharmaceutical sales business this study isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. isPermaLink="false">http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/?p=2918#comment-12150

Just thought this might be interesting as related to the (over)use of statins ...
just received the following results from recent blood work.
TC 210 (target: below 200)
Triglycerides 75 (target: below 150)
LDL 122 (target: below 100)
HDL 73 (target: above 40)
ratio 2.9 (target: below 4.4)
CRP low (did not get a numerical measurment)
Now, get this -- the doctor recomended that I start taking a statin drug!!! It took A LOT of self control for me to politely suggest we wait a few months before considering that, as opposed to saying "what's the matter with you???"
And this was from a doc who is normally somewhat conservative about not over-treating.
<i>And yet this happens every single day. Sad really, isn't it?

I heard one news story that didn't even mention CRP and just left you with the idea that everyone should be on statins. The study results show that 2.8% of the control group had a cardiovascular event vs. 2% in the treatment group. Yet the spinmeisters call this "dramatic." GET REAL!!!!!!
If you read the current fine print on Crestor ads, it says that Crestor has not been shown to prevent heart attacks. Sadly, I'm sure that will go away with this hyped data.

Great article. The media accounts are pure hype.
