Celebrity Drew Carey Whacks Off 80 Pounds, Beats His Diabetes On A Low-Carb Diet With Exercise

It’s no real secret about how most of Hollywood gets themselves into shape when they have an important movie role coming up that requires them to shed the excess weight off their body. According to Jim actress Courtney Thorne-Smith revealed in a September 2009 interview that low-carb is how people in the industry eat and that it’s pretty common knowledge amongst industry insiders what you need to do to slim down is restrict your carbohydrate intake to primarily nuts, cheeses, meats, and non-starchy veggies. The problem is that while this way of eating is considered normal within the inner circles of the celebrity world, very few of them are out there talking about how the low-carb lifestyle changed their life. High-profile celebs like Brad Pitt, Jennifer Anniston, Angelina Jolie, LL Cool J, Cameron Diaz, Dolly Parton, and others all swear by low-carb, but haven’t really taken up the mantle for this cause. Earlier this year, celebrity chef Alton Brown shed 50 pounds on a semi-low-carb diet with great fanfare and notoriety. But this week People magazine is reporting that 52-year old funnyman-turned-actor-turned-game show host Drew Carey has slimmed down a total of 80 pounds and come off of all of his diabetes medications thanks to “shaving his diet of carbohydrates” and exercising “religiously.”

Carey’s career has been marked by his propensity for dibble-dabbling in a little of this and a little of that within television circles for the past two decades. As a stand-up comedian, he got his national television debut appearing on the talent show Star Search in 1988 and then later on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1991. After appearances on an HBO young comedians special and then on Late Night with David Letterman, this sudden influx of publicity catapulted Carey to superstar status in the stand-up comedy world in 1994 when he hosted his own special on Showtime called “Drew Carey: Human Cartoon.” Over the next few years he accepted a few minor supporting acting gigs on the silver screen and television until ABC gave Carey a chance to develop his own comedy television show named after him called “The Drew Carey Show” which lasted nine seasons. He also hosted the improv comedy program called “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” from 1998 to 2006. His foray into game show hosting started with a short-lived CBS-inspired one called “Power of 10” in 2007 until CBS offered him the gig to replace Bob Barker on “The Price Is Right” later that year where he remains host today. But just like fellow rotund actors Jason Alexander, Danny DeVito, Rosanne Barr, Jack Black and many others, Carey’s weight has been as much a part of who he is as his entertainment value. Well, that is, until now!

Carey admits his obesity has always wreaked havoc on both his personal and professional life and that the time was right for him to make permanent, healthy lifestyle changes for the sake of his weight and health. He talked quite openly about it at the CBS, Showtime and The CW TCA Party in Beverly Hills, California on Wednesday.

“It sucks being fat, you know,” Carey exclaimed.

Even worse than carrying around excessive weight, Carey has also dealt with having Type 2 diabetes which is a condition made worse by excessive consumption of carbohydrates. But after implementing a strict low-carb diet into his life, all the medications he was taking to control his blood sugar and insulin levels became unnecessary.

“I’m not diabetic anymore,” Carey revealed.

Technically, there is no cure for diabetes, but this Duke University study reveals that you can can thwart the metabolic effects of the disease through proper nutrition which includes the implementation of a reduced-carbohydrate lifestyle change. And when asked what he did to take off the weight and return his blood sugars to normal, the answer was obvious.

“No carbs,” Carey noted. “I have cheated a couple times, but basically no carbs, not even a cracker. No bread at all. No pizza, nothing. No corn, no beans, no starches of any kind. Egg whites in the morning or like, Greek yogurt, cut some fruit.”

While a low-carb diet is not necessarily “no carbs” as Carey describes (it’s more accurately described as controlled carb), he’s certainly cut out the culprit carbs that lead to weight gain and blood sugar abnormalities–namely crackers, bread, pizza, corn, beans, starchy carbs and more! Eliminating these foods from your diet is absolutely necessary for people with a sensitivity to carbohydrate like him. And he even realizes that certain high-sugar fruits like bananas are off limits and instead opts for low-glycemic ones such as blueberries and strawberries. And his dinner meals consist of grilled chicken and steamed non-starchy vegetables while his beverage choice is water alone.

“No coffee, no tea, no soda,” Carey expressed.

The final element in Drew Carey’s low-carb weight loss success story is the role of exercise which he said was a critical companion to his new and improved eating pattern. He said he engaged in “lots of cardio,” upwards of 45 minutes a day, six days a week to help him drop from a size 44 waist down to a 33-34. Ultimately he’d like to lose another 10 pounds to fit into size 32 pants to get back to where he was when he served in the United States Marine Corps prior to getting into stand-up comedy nearly a quarter century ago.

This newfound “skinny” body Carey finds himself in at the moment has him excited about staying motivated to never go back to the way he was ever again.

“I was sick of being fat on the camera. Really, I just got sick of it,” he confided. “Once I started losing weight, again, like once I started dropping a couple pant sizes, then it was easy ’cause once you see the results, then you don’t wanna stop.”

Now he’s incredibly motivated by this 80-pound low-carb weight loss success along with beating the effects of Type 2 diabetes. I am criminal defense attorney and they are talking about televising in the near future – things are bad enough without being on tv! I will be unbelievably anxious and paralyzed if I have to do that.   • Carey has a lot of talent, obviously. We should be able to enjoy that talent for a lot longer now that he’s slimmed down and controlled (cured?) his diabetes.

    Oh my goodness, he actually did it. Drew really made some amazing progress. Low carb and exercise makes it even better. Since exercise was actually part of the method this big loss just may stick around. Great article featuring that it CAN be done.

    I wonder if he’s going low-carb AND low-fat, though… mentioning egg whites like that. I could see that making it difficult for him to stay healthy and maintain his loss if he’s basically just eating a lot of protein and little else…

    • Greg, I agree. But we all must take this journey for ourselves and at least Drew has the carbohydrate-restriction part right. Maybe the more he learns about healthy low-carb living, he’ll realize that the fat is not going to harm him if he eats it. This is a journey, a process that hopefully he learns along the way.

  • These are pretty intelligent people as a whole. All of the arts, including writing attract intelligent people for the most part. It’s stands to reason that with the commonality of low carb for weight loss being so well understood within the community that somebody is going to figure out that it is that and a whole lot more than that besides. — Like natures perfection for pure and perfect health. They will need to understand “The Hybrid Factor” first, in order to understand what has happened with carbohydrates and sugar in our fruits and vegetables and grains. Then it all makes sense. Sugar and hybrid carbohydrate addiction will also need to be understood. — When “Hollywood” understands these simple facts our troubles are over. — Then of course the doing of something about it, becomes greater than ever.

    guess this means he won’t be funny anymore. Fat comedians always stop being funny when they lose weight! Maybe its partly due to how he looks, with the weight, you just have to look at him and you feel like laughing, now he’s kinda weird and creepy loooking.

    Anyway, it’s great to hear a bonafide celebrity talking low carb! those bits about egg whites and excessive exercise have me concerned tho…

      Give Drew a chance to be funny as a skinny guy. 🙂 I do wish he got the part about increasing your fat when you cut the carbs, but he’s certainly further along in the process than most people.

    I remember it took me awhile starting out to really get over years of fat phobia. But I’m way over it now! Thinking about grilling up some sausage wrapped in bacon for breakfast…

    • Yeah, I know! Just like ribbing you buddy. Lipophobia is a STRONG thing to overcome and I’m willing to give Drew a chance. He’ll find any lingering hunger he may have will go away and that most of the foods he consumes will naturally have a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb composition sooner or later. Cook me up some of that bacon-wrapped sausage while you’re at it! 😀

  • I don’t know that I ever *had* lipophobia. Sure, I believed for a while that saturated fats were harmful but I don’t think I ever really got into the notion that you had to cut them *all* out. Not sure why that notion didn’t take.

    But when I found the Weston A. Price Foundation and read what they had to say and went “duh! Of COURSE you need to eat fat with fat-soluble vitamin sources!”, I was so over the saturated fat avoidance it wasn’t funny.

    Good thing too. It’s made low-carbing so much easier and I *feel* better.

    • I would be willing to venture a guess that upwards of 80-90% of the population thinks consuming dietary fat is harmful to them in some form or fashion. I sure thought that at one time, but I’m making up for lost time now. 😀

    Hey Jimmy, can you share how you know Angelina Jolie swears by low-carb? I just read an article (granted who knows if that source is reliable) about her getting in shape for Salt and her trainer had her eating about 60% carbs.

    • THANKS Jen! That reference is in regards to the media reports about the celebrities who have been on Atkins/low-carb in the past. Maybe she’s changed her tune now, but Jolie has been a believer in carbohydrate-restriction in the past.

    Egg WHITES !! tsk tsk I lost 70 lbs and the thing I am proud of is not looking like a lost 70 lbs or having people ask me if I have Cancer or something ( seems a lot of me vegetarian friends at work [due to wife] fought with cancer, so the question is very common. Eat the yoke Drew. its LOWCARB/HIGHFAT.
