I went on low carb before I discovered Dr. Bernstein, but was happy to see someone else in the medical community advocating low carb for diabetes. You can't argue with his experience. His book, the Diabetes Solution is a must read for all diabetics, even if you don't follow his diet to the letter. His appearances on dLife were great, but cut too short in my opinion. I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all for treating diabetes, but low carb should be an option and more diabetics would benefit from it.

Great interview. Cheers!

When Dr. Bernstein says: "I read the Atkins' diet and found that it usually works initially, but when he backs off and permits the re-institution of high carbohydrate foods, such as bread, he is just reigniting the addiction to carbohydrates that has spawned the epidemic of obesity and diabetes. In my experience, any diet that permits carbohydrates other than vegetables and perhaps a few bran products is doomed to failure."

I 100% agree with him!

I've come to the conclusion that I cannot increase my carbs at maintenance.

Thanks okay, small price to pay for normal sugars and excellent health!

Jimmy,

This is probably your best interview to day! It is fascinating to hear his take on low-carb and even his criticisms of Atkins, which I was not aware of, and perhaps explains why he has kept so aloof from the rest of the movement. He basically says Atkins is too soft! That's hard core! You can't fault someone who is such a strong believer.

Thanks for not forgetting Dr. B and his very important message and voice. Maybe he could recommend for people getting into the dietary field as to how we could be most effective most affordably.

Speaking of forgotten voices, I don't know if you remember Jack LaLanne, who was a very famous exercise promoter in the US during the 50's and 60's. We grew up watching him on TV. He also has a low-carb story to tell of how he was converted as a boy to a no-sugar-flour-starch lifestyle. His life was so transformed by it, that he opened the first chain of public gyms in the US and almost single-handedly promoted the exercise movement in the US against a great deal of scientific pressure against him. Scientists felt that exercise was too dangerous and harsh for people to handle. He could be a great interview, before he is no longer with us. He lives somewhere in California, his website is (of course) "www.jacklalanne.com". He loves to speak, and is another true American health classic. Many older people will remember him fondly, even if the younger do not.

Be sure to read his bio page for his anti-sugar story: "http://www.jacklalanne.com/biograph.html"

What a great interview with one of the long-term but almost forgotten giant personalities behind low-carb.
