In Episode 8 of “Jimmy Moore Presents: Ask The Low-Carb Experts,” we are pleased to welcome famed low-carb clinician named Dr. Mary Vernon discussing a topic I’m frequently e-mailed and asked about: “What Questions Should I Ask My (Non-Low-Carb Friendly) Doc?” Dr. Vernon is the co-author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution with Jackie Eberstein, RN (who was our very first guest in Episode 1 of ATLCX) and is a Past President of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. She is well-known amongst her medical professional peers as an expert on the therapeutic use of low-carb ketogenic diets on patients to treat a variety of health issues, including diabetes and metabolic syndrome. She is the CEO of Innovative Metabolic Solutions which seeks to educate her fellow physicians and medical professionals on how to use science-based modalities with patients. Dr. Vernon has a heart for arming doctors with practical ways to implement low-carb diets where they are necessary for improving key health markers in their patients. What better expert could we have invited on to the show to address what questions you should be asking your (non-low-carb friendly) doctor than her! We were so privileged to have the always-enthusiastic Dr. Vernon join us on ATLCX answering listener questions about the kind of questions you should be asking your ambivalent-towards-carbohydrate-restriction doctor in EPISODE 8 on March 1, 2012.

Listen to Dr. Mary Vernon on “What Questions Should I Ask My (Non-Low-Carb Friendly) Doc?”:

  • It would be wonderful if every doctor was up on the latest science
  • We need changes to happen in the national nutritional recommendations
  • Doctors are sincerely there to help their patients get better
  • Why giving your physician a lecture or a book is too “energy intensive”
  • Patients can let their good health results speak for themselves
  • How low-carb nutrition is spreading to physicians because of patients
  • Physicians have been told to tell patients things that don’t work
  • Doctors are just as frustrated that their patients aren’t getting better
  • Insurance companies determine “quality medical care” by drugs prescribed
  • The “larger political spectrum” that impacts medical care in America
  • The real fear of “personal punishment” for not prescribing medications
  • Ask your insurance company if they demand specific drug protocols
  • Jimmy Moore’s “List Of Low-Carb Doctors” blog
  • Why doctors keep promoting low-fat diets if they’re not effective
  • If low-carb works for you through n=1 experiments, then you should do it
  • Only 10% of the population tends to do well on low-fat, high-carb
  • 75-90% of the population should start off with low-carb and then tweak
  • Her $100 challenge to anyone who can provide scientific proof of low-fat
  • Most physicians don’t have the “interest or drive” to talk science
  • They really only want to make sure they meet the test/drug guidelines
  • A doctor is your personal health consultant and not the final arbiter
  • When you are in a conflictual relationship with your doc, nobody benefits
  • Patients can say NO to a statin, but still take the prescription
  • Ask your physician to monitor you on your “lifestyle intervention”
  • Triglycerides will drop “very rapidly” on a low-carb diet within days
  • Your cholesterol may go up for some time as fat cells are “liberated”
  • Cholesterol could be on its way out but it takes time to leave the body
  • VAP and NMR Lipoprofile tests are discussed greatly by vocal physicians
  • What questions you can ask a prospective doc to see if low-carb friendly
  • Take the prescription from your doctor, but chunk it when you get home
  • The NMR test is through LabCorp and the VAP test is through Quest
  • The most important number in your lipid panel is your triglycerides
  • Insulin is elevated when triglycerides are up and HDL is down
  • Intermediate lipoproteins get lumped in with the wrong lipoproteins
  • Go to PubMed.gov to find the scientific research
  • The cardiologist she showed link between triglycerides and heart disease
  • Abnormal blood sugar is the driver of the cascade of blood vessel damage
  • Ask your doctor about getting a cardiac calcium scan
  • Christine getting a heart scan done in 2011
  • Don’t fight with your doctor over the dietary recommendations they push
  • Work with your doctor by letting him do his protocol, but do low-carb
  • About one-third of all prescriptions written are never filled
  • Complain to your Congressmen and insurance companies about low-fat diets
  • Gary Taubes’ “The Soft Science of Dietary Fat” column
  • National nutritional policies are about dogma not data
  • Dr. Atkins took his own money to pay for research of low-carb diets
  • Within two years of first low-carb study, ADA abandoned an official diet
  • The American Diabetes Association promotes “an individualized approach”
  • If a Type 1 diabetic can alter insulin dosage, then do it with low-carb
  • Your body makes about one unit of insulin per hour
  • Type 1 diabetics are becoming Type 2 from “over-insulinizing them”
  • Type 2 diabetics become more like Type 1s when their pancreas tires out
  • Canadian low-carb physician and researcher Dr. Jay Wortman
  • What tests are most effective to run and how to have them run
  • Patients only need to see a physician once and then consult over phone
  • The West Coast is a little more challenging finding a low-carb doctor
  • Doctors don’t like talking on the telephone because they can’t charge
  • There’s no need to disclose anything and “be the low-carb advocate”
  • Many insurance companies need a diagnosis in order to pay for the tests
  • There are biological reasons why low-carb reduces inflammation
  • What book she would recommend for a physician (Why We Get Fat)
  • Whether there’s such a thing as too much of a low-carb friendly doctor
  • Dr. Duane Graveline getting transient global amnesia from statins
  • Let’s try to educate the doctors who want to be educated
  • The patient gets “to make the choices” about your health, not the doctor
  • Doctors aren’t so interested in information until they see good outcomes
  • You should try to look for a physician who has “scientific curiosity”
  • Patient life changes are “hardly arguable” to a physician
  • If you can’t find a low-carb friendly doc, at least find a friendly one
  • Find out who your low-carb friends go to see for their physician
  • It is possible that over time hormones can possibly still be off kilter
  • Why you shouldn’t fill the prescription, just take the piece of paper
  • Don’t go see your doctor and say “I’m going to leave you” (don’t fight!)
  • How to handle a doctor who is pushy about promoting statins for high-LDL
  • What can be done to convince a doctor of the HDL/triglyceride ratio
  • A physician is only reflecting back to patients what they’ve been told
  • It’s important to investigate whatever intervention is recommended
