KFC Giving Away FREE Samples Of Their New Kentucky Grilled Chicken On April 27

Get yourself some free low-carb grilled chicken at KFC on Monday

FREE?! Did somebody say FREE?! Yeppers, they sure did and pulling a page out of the Denny’s marketing playbook this year we’ve got good ole Kentucky Fried Chicken–er, I mean, KFC–to thank. I know, I know…what can you eat at KFC that’s worth being free? After all, don’t they put all that high-carb breading crap on their chicken which totally ruins an otherwise wonderfully low-carb food? Ahhhh, that was so pre-2009 because now they have introduced a brand new product to their menu–it’s Kentucky GRILLED Chicken, baby!!!

All I can say is “well, it’s about time!” Grilled chicken done right is as delicious as it comes and KFC has sweetened the pot some more by offering anyone and everyone a chance to sink their teeth into this wonderful new product. See the nutritional info on this carb-free menu option at KFC now. My fellow low-carb blogger and recipe queen Dana Carpender is also super-excited about this promotion which you’ve probably seen on television. Check out the nifty ad below:

KFC has attempted to sell non-fried chicken before, but sales have always been lackluster at best. Maybe if those of us who are livin’ la vida low-carb all show up on Monday, April 27, 2009 for this special FREE promotional giveaway and give the new Kentucky Grilled Chicken a try that they’ll see the benefit of offering a much healthier low-carb option to their customers. This could be a small, but highly effective way for us to show our support for a company willing to cater to our unique nutritional needs. CLICK HERE to find the KFC nearest to you.

While you’re there, be sure to grab yourself a side of healthy low-carb green beans and a diet soda or unsweet tea for a fantastic low-carb lunch. When you’re done, be sure to mosey on over to the KFC Contact page to let them know what you think! Of course, you can leave your feedback in the comments section below as well. I’m anxious to hear what you think about the new Kentucky Grilled Chicken. And did I mention it’s FREE on Monday? Just checking.

4-27-09 UPDATE: The verdict is in on the Kentucky Grilled Chicken and here’s the instant YouTube video review Christine and I recorded today:

“Salt, Sodium Phosphate, and Monosodium Glutamate Seasoned with: Maltodextrin, Salt, Bleached Wheat Flour, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and Cottonseed Oil, Monosodium Glutamate, Spices, Palm Oil, Natural Flavor, Garlic Powder, Soy Sauce (Soybean, Wheat, Salt), Chicken Fat, Chicken Broth, Autolyzed Yeast, Beef Powder, Rendered Beef Fat, Extractives of Turmeric, Dehydrated Carrot, Onion Powder, and Not More Than 2% Each of Calcium Silicate and Silicon Dioxide Added as Anticaking Agents.”

Just to be fair, this is what the chicken is marinated in. There’s at least trace carbs and trans fats in the final product, although I’m sure much of it gets cooked out. It’s not a substitute for buying and cooking your own, although if it’s free and you’re on the road…I just wouldn’t be so giddy about promoting it.

THANKS Sean! I wouldn’t say I’m “giddy about promoting it,” but it is an option for people who are livin’ la vida low-carb. And if it is a FREE promotion like this, then I think it serves their interests to tell them about it. I appreciate the added information about the cooking process you provided which will help people determine if this is something they want to partake in or not.

    It smells good..

I think there will be lots of people who are on diet will break there program on that day if there is a free tasting of Kentucky Fried Chicken..
    Even me.

    Just waiting for that day!

I bought a six-piece bucket on Friday afternoon because I did not feel like cooking. It is okay. Nothing really to call home about. Personally, I prefer the rotisserrie chicken from Wholefoods, Costco, or Sam’s Club.

Thanks Jimmy for your wonderful blog. I have been following you since September 2008 and have dropped 11 pounds eating way less carbs than I use to.

Michelle, THANKS for your feedback and I agree with you about Rotisserie from Sam’s…AMAZING! Congratulations on your low-carb success so far…KEEP IT UP, my friend. :)

Thanks Jimmy!!! I went and got a piece of the grilled chicken on my lunchbreak and I found it to be very good. The piece I got was juicy and had a good taste. I brought some broccoli fried in coconut oil to go with it and had a good lunch at work today. I appreciate the heads up about this so I knew to go by there.

    Glad you enjoyed it, Shannon!

    Jimmy,

Chicken breast is, of course, notorious for being dry. I wonder if a thigh would have been better. Though it may not have been any better “flavor” wise. As you pointed out, it is lacking in that department.

If this does well, then this will provide another choice for us LC’ers when we have to eat out and make a fast food choice. Let’s hope the sales are good for our sake. And perhaps with a little feedback from the public KFC will tweak the spices and kick up the flavor a notch or two.

Any word if the chicken is marinated in sugary things or anything like that?

Several people have written to me with the ingredients they put in the marinade for this chicken (which didn’t help, obviously!) and it does have some sugar and even trace amounts of trans fat in it. EEEEK! Like I said in the video, we’re not getting it again.

  • Sue

That didn’t look like a breast that you were eating – more like a thigh or rib. Shame it was too dry.

    What was Christine drinking?

You might be right…it was VERY dry, though. I don’t eat a lot of chicken, so it’s possible this wasn’t a breast. Christine had unsweet iced tea. :)

  • I tried it and liked the flavor, but since my KFC only was giving away tiny little chick wings, it was almost all “skin” with the flavors concentrated. Not too dry, but not as fatty as I’d like either.

I thought they’d be giving away real pieces like you got. Matter of fact for our party of five, even though there were 5 listed on the receipt, they only gave us three. And had a problem refunding the charge for the drink when I discovered there was not a non-sugar, non-artificially-sweetened drink option on the menu, and when I refused a bottled water (because I wanted a cup with ice) they wouldn’t even give me a water cup like my kids have!

I agree with your assessment that the big companies have been ignoring low-carb. I’ve been bringing it up whenever I have the opportunity on MahaloAnswers.com, which is an up-and-coming answers website with a pleasant community atmosphere, where people get paid if their answer is picked as best. People will come on asking about the best way to loose weight, and what do I tell them? And guess who wins those tips for best answer? (Yes, it’s me!)

I really cannot understand why you think eating this crap is Paleo.
These are not free ranging chickens, they are factory farmed on corn and grains with zero Omega-3. Pumped full of growth hormones and anti-biotics.

I’m not on a Paleo diet, Bill.

    Jimmy,

I’m sure your opinion will affect many people. Go back and wait on some chicken right as it finishes cooking. Give it one more try.

I had a breast/thigh/wing and they were all moist with plenty of flavor. Unless your KFC overcooked it or reheated it, it should be moist.

But don’t do the chicken sound there, you may get the crap kicked out of you!

Actually, they wouldn’t be able to hear my chicken sounds because an off-duty employee talking on her cell phone would be so freakin’ loud. Yes, that was annoying. :)

  • Sarah

I love this chicken and I’ve gotten it three different times starting on the day they began serving! It’s very juicy and flavorful. My parents, who are super picky about food, love it as well.

I definitely think KFC’s are different from location to location.
