Dr. Barnet Meltzer transformed his traditional medical focus to wellness

Modern medicine is quite literally changing right before our eyes as more and more frustrated physicians are moving away from their conventional training and education towards a more natural nutrition and exercise approach to health. The failure of what has always been heavily promoted by the medical industry, including the abundant use of risky pharmaceutical drugs over natural cures, has doctors turning in more of an integrative medicine direction with their patients. Today’s podcast interview guest is one such example of an “old guard” physician who is setting a new trend that I believe is the future of medicine.

In Episode 304 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from a pioneer and well-known expert in the field of Preventive Medicine, Integrative Medicine, and Clinical Nutrition named Dr. Barnet Meltzer who has authored a book entitled The Best Kept Secret to Permanent Weight Loss. His Del Mar, CA-based Meltzer Wellness Institute is yet another one of these revolutionary clinical practices popping up around the nation designed to help people achieve long-term vitality, wellness, and happiness. Although he’s been practicing medicine for four decades, Dr. Meltzer now realizes that there is a better way to help people attain the highest level of wellness possible.

During this interview, you’ll hear Dr. Meltzer share about why medical school is more about teaching disease instead of health, why nutrition and fitness is virtually ignored by the medical establishment, what the future of medical training will be, why natural cures are better than drugs, how the healthcare debate is actually about chronic disease care, how upwards of 60-70% do some form of alternative medicine behind their doctor’s back, why his philosophy is to “make time for wellness,” how it only takes about two hours daily to attain the best health, the purpose of reflection in overall health, how you can get the “metabolic fire,” the difference between appetite and hunger, the detrimental impact of a condition he refers to as “appetitus,” the social connection to food, why people who have tried and failed on diets over and over again have a harder time attaining permanent weight loss success, and so much more! Feed off the energy that Dr. Meltzer has in this enthusiastic interview.

haha… Dr Meltzer use to come in the jimbo’s naturally healthfood store i worked at in Del Mar. This guys was by no means healthy looking to me. He wasn’t very courteous, polite, and seemed to have some form of OCD when he came through my Checkout Counter. He was rude to alot of us there. I would never take his advice or buy his book.

    THANKS for sharing, Troy!

Troy inspired me to write about Dr. Meltzer, too. I was a patient of his 30 years ago! He had been specializing in holistic medicine for at least several years before I went to see him, so that is nothing new. He wrote a diet book in the early 80′s called “The 21-Day Del Mar Diet”, which was a compilation of what all his patients were put on – a Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian diet. I followed his advice for nearly 25 years. At least I didn’t ruin my health with a vegan diet like Lierra Keith. All the same, he can be an engaging and persuasive man, if misguided now that we all know about the Low-Carb/Primal/Paleo lifestyle. I doubt he’s changed his mind as far as diet goes, and I don’t want to spend the money to read the book to confirm. Jimmy, have you read his book? Other advice he has given is basically very good and follows along the lines of Mark Sisson – have fun, enjoy life, meditate, etc. I’m just glad the Eades came along and changed my dietary life for the better!

I appreciate your comments, Jeanie, and YES I have read his book! I know Dr. Meltzer’s philosophy on health HAS changed from just a few years back, so you might be surprised by what you read in his book. Absolutely he is on a much better path with his advice than before. :)

I didn’t like how Dr. Meltzer basically blamed fat people for having “appetitis” and kept talking about willpower was necessary to prevent weight regain. It sounded very smug. I think Gary Taubes had it right when he said that getting fat is a result of a metabolism dysfunction and people are driven to overeat because their cells aren’t actually getting fed.
