Dr. Kevin Weiland advocates a “good fat” hunter-gatherer diet
Most of us are abundantly aware of the tremendous health benefits of eating a diet like our early ancestors consumed. For those Plains Indians in the Dakotas, that meant a nutrient-dense diet rich in grass-fed buffalo, elk, lamb, deer and other foods such as free-range chicken eggs, salmon, flax seed, as well as other omega-3-rich essential fatty acids. Today’s podcast interview guest is a practicing family doctor who became so frustrated with seeing his patients struggling with preventable diseases that could have been avoided with simple changes in nutrition.
In Episode 284 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear directly from Dr. Kevin Weiland, author of The Dakota Diet: Health Secrets from the Great Plains. As you listen to him speaking about his paleo-like nutritional plan, you’ll still hear Dr. Weiland allow conventional wisdom creep in focusing on the perils of saturated fat and the idea of calories in, calories out, for example. But he also recognizes the importance of balancing the omega-6 and omega-3 ratio, the superior quality of grass-fed meats, and finding a cure for childhood obesity. We discuss the future of healthcare in America, the impact that President Obama could make on the issue of diet, and other related topics that came up during our enjoyable conversation.
