‘Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show’ Episode 209: Have You Tried Seabuckthorn To Get Your Omega-3s?

Seabuckthorn is a Himalayan fruit rich in omega 3, 6, 7, and 9

With omega-6 fatty acids dominating the American diet these days no thanks to all the man-made vegetable oils that show up all across the food chain, finding new sources of omega-3 fatty acids to counterbalance the overwhelming ratio of upwards of 20 to 1 in the typical diet is critical. We know about consuming fish oil, Wild Alaskan salmon and other fresh fish, walnuts, and grass-fed beef, for example. But I recently learned of another source of omega-3s that you may want to hear about.

In Episode 209 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from Peter McMullin, the marketing and promotions manager for an up-and-coming company called Sibu educates us on a fruit from the Himalayas called seabuckthorn. The oil from the seeds found in seabuckthorn contain an excellent non-fishy source of omega-3s as well as 190 other nutrients. Aside from macadamia nuts, they are the only other food that contains omega-7, a less known fatty acid. Peter tells us about his company’s Tashi Diet Care product that contains gel capsules filled with the oil from the seed of the seabuckthorn fruit.

The new goji berries? I am skeptical of claims about exotic fruits and prefer to eat locally grown real food. Aronia berries have more antioxidant power than any other fruit, and they’re grown right here in North America. Most people find them too tart to eat raw, but I nosh on them when they’re in season, chewing them slowly to release the puckering tannins. Aronia berries don’t have omega 3 fatty acids, but there is another North American plant that does – shepherd’s purse or purslane. People in the Meditteranean, Asia, and Latin America reap the rich nutrition of purslane while we North Americans view them as pesky weeds, pulling them up or spraying them to death.

The fertile lands of North America give us abundant nutritional food choices. No need to search for the elixir of life in far-flung places.
