‘Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show’ Episode 199: Konstantin Monastyrsky Shows Fiber Isn’t The Only ‘Menace’

Konstantin Monastyrsky goes absolutely ballistic about Dr. Atkins

You can always tell about a man’s true character when they are challenged on what they believe. After posting my recent book reviews on Amazon earlier this week, one of the authors did something rather surprising–he left a 1-star review of MY book Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb: My Journey From Flabby Fat to Sensationally Skinny in One Year. HUH?! My rating of his book was a 3-star, but this obviously set him off and he retaliated against me and my book as a result. The author who did this is the subject of my second interview as part of this special “Wacky Week” of podcasts.

In Episode 199 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we are graced with the presence of a Ukraine-born author named Konstantin Monastyrsky, author of a book several of my readers have told me about called Fiber Menace: The Truth About the Leading Role of Fiber in Diet Failure, Constipation, Hemorrhoids, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, and Colon Cancer. As you listen to the interview today, it won’t take very long to learn why this guy’s just a few fries short of a Happy Meal–bashing the cream of the crop low-carb authors Dr. Richard Bernstein, the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins, Dr. Mike Eades, Dr. Arthur Agatston, and others. Although I attempted to steer the conversation to talk about his book, Konstantin wasn’t interested in discussing why fiber is a “menace” but instead showed why HE is the real menace. You just gotta hear it to believe it–YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT COMES OUT OF HIS MOUTH!

There are FOUR ways you can listen to Episode 199:

I think you have done a terrible injustice to both Dr. Betty Martini and Mr. Konstantin Monastyrsky! — Neither is “Waco”. In fact both are serious minded, intelligent individuals that took the time and effort to be interviewed by you Jimmy.

Dr. Ornish said you made a strawman or pincushion out of him. — I disagree with Dr. Ornish the same as you do but to slander and ridicule these people because of there views Jimmy I believe is beneath you. — I don’t think you fully realise what you are doing.

Ornish I would say is dead wrong.

Konstantin Monastyrsky and Dr. Betty Martini, far from being “Wacko’s” are dealing with very important issues that differ from the established norm, that;s all.

Little different than Dr. Atkins did in the early seventies with his different point of .view. A huge segment of the medical community still scoff at his views.

Dr. Atkins had a big piece of the pie and I respect him fully the same as you do but I too, believe he missed some very important points and I also think he caved in somewhat to all of the public pressure at times.

None of us is perfect, we very much included.

So you think both of them were quite lucid, huh Tom? I never said they didn’t have good points to make at times, but their methodology for communicating their message is what is highly suspect. THANKS for sharing your opinion, Tom.

Maybe the author just didn’t like your book? Why do you assume he retaliated? You think because you rated his book 3 stars, he has to do the same for you?

Jimmy, think about what you’re posting publicly.

Sometimes you turn your articles into attack mode.

Well, of course it was retaliation in relation to my review of his book, Joyce. I posted the 3-star review of his book (an honest one after reading it) on Tuesday this week and by Wednesday morning Konstantin had already responded with a 1-star review of my book.

The crux of his comments about my book were centered around how he thinks I have lied about my weight loss here at my blog just to make a buck. I’m definitely not getting rich doing what I’m doing.

The truth of the matter is I really did lose the weight, but Konstatin didn’t like my review of his book. The sad part is that he never actually read my book at all and was merely retaliating against me.

I’ve definitely thought through this very clearly, Joyce. Konstantin expected a positive, glowing 5-star review of his book and it didn’t happen. So he lashed out at me because of it. Did I miss something?

Sorry you feel I was in “attack mode,” but I would more accurately describe it as “truth mode.” :)

    THANK YOU for your comments!

Jimmy, I think you are misunderstanding what Tom and many of us have said. It is not that we think Dr Martini or Konstantin are new mossiahs and will carryt the torch toi save the world, and neither is Obama. But just because you disagree with a man’s or woman’s point of view doesnt give you a right to call them name. I am quite a conservative guy in many views, and working in main stream university, I am used to peoples calling me al kind of names. As you know I work at Suny Downstate, and believe me I heard it all from wacko to naive to suicidal for believing obama is not the amswer to this great country economic debackle. I believe in free market and capitalism, not wealth distribution and goverment control. Thats why I escaped socialist Russia and came here! I know a lot of wealthy investors personally who are taking money off the stock market becuase they do not trust Obama and his team of advisors. Wall street is loosing points at almost scary rate. Investors are puzzled as to what will come next as far as taxes and other economic changes. So my point in all of this is just because I disagree with Obama I dont call him names. These people agreed to come on your show and be interviewed by you without financial compnesation or any other profit for that matter. It is beneath you, it really is, you are much better then that, I believe, to take a cheap shot at these people why they are gone and call them few fries short of happy meal. I wrote a big opinion but you brushed it off before. I hope you do comment now. I was really suprised to hear it from you. I dont want to be redundant, but you can attack the message all you want, and disagreeing is fine, but attacking the mesenger is really cheap, especially when you didnt do it to these people faces when you interviewed them. You can go back to Dr Eades blog and check his back and forth debate with Konstantin. And Konstantin did call Dr Eades names and insulted his work just because Dr Mike critisized his book, not the content, but the editing and such. But Dr Mike stayed class act and intelligently calmed him down. There is just no need for that, really isnt. I am glad I wasnt alone in my opinion. You are just better better then that!

Vadim, THANK YOU again for sharing your opinions. I will happily respond to you again just as I did with Betty Martini. Anyone who listens to Konstantin in this interview will conclude that he’s just not all there. Sure, he may have some merit in the specifics of the subject matter he is discussing, but his methodology for getting there and explaining it is severely lacking. When he started attacking Dr. Atkins personally, I don’t have any respect for someone like that. Dr. Atkins was a good man who has helped a lot of people overcome weight and health problems. As one of those people, I think it is quite arrogant and conceited of somebody like this character to come along and claim that Atkins, Eades, Bernstein, and the like all made mistakes in their books and that HE is the only one who is right. I call a spade a spade and always have, Vadim. I apologize if that offends you, but Konstantin Monastyrsky is deserving of the descriptions coming his way. THANKS again for telling me what you think. :)

Saying “author X is wrong and you should read my book to see why” is one of the methods used by un- or little known authors to appear in the sphere.

Any difference that they start do magnify and make a target to challenge the established authors may be some minute thing but the message goes “Dr. X was challenged by Y” – which puts them on the same level, giving the challenger free publicity.
See Colpo vs. Eades and now this…
Not that I think establishment should always pretend not to see newcomers but it’s nice if they realize that someone might just want to use their names as a trampoline and then act appropriately – agree, disagree, ignore, whatever

  • Vadim

Jimmy, I have to go along with you as far as Konstantin retaliating against you in his book review on Amazon. How do I know it? Very simple, Joyce! Konstantin went absolutely bazurk when Dr Eades critisized his book. Dr Eades then intelligently explained to Konstantin that it wasnt the content he had problems with, but the editing of the book. Konstantin threatened to attack Dr Eades all over the net and to discredit him. Dr Eades lauphed it off and told him that he did it himself on few occasion, meaning he did revised some of the content as new information become available. After few exchange on Dr Eades blog, Konstantin calmed down and appologized to Dr Eades saying he was wrong and simply snapped because he believes there is some kind of conspiracy in the publishing world agaisnt him. So I do agree with Jimmy 100 percent that this man attacked him personally, just a day after the Jimmy reviewed his book. And knowing Konstantin’s history it is just full proof. Like one famous sport annalyst used to proclaim ”Lets go to the videotape”‘. So, joyce if you want some proof of Jimmy assertion just go to Dr Eades blog or ask Dr Eades and he will direct you to it, and you will see for yourself first hand that Jimmy is correct. Ok, saying that , I still think there is no need to go on Konstantin level and start calling him or nay other who we completely disagree with names. Jimmy, I am with you when it comes to his or her antics and sensationalism and delivery, we are just on other side of the ocean when it comes to attacking the messenger, thats all and others feel the same way. You can easily say that he or she is dead wrong in your opinion and explain why, but going after them personally and saying he or she is missing a screw or few fries is just a bit amature and childish, really is. I love Dr Atkin work just as much as anyone else. I didnt knwo him personally, but I know few people who did, and they all describe him as a wonderful human being and a caring doctor. His wife and I come from the same town, and Veronika is a nice girl too. And noone suffered more from name callig then Dr Atkin himself. So doing the same toward other people, no matter how wrong they are is just beneath us! I am sure , if Dr Atkin was here he would agree with few of us who think so. I hate to speculate, but again lets go to the videotape. I have never seen or heard Dr Atkin or Dr Eades call anyone names who disagree with them, they would argue and engage in intelligent debate with all who disagree but never went as far as personal insults. I appreciate you defend Dr Eades and Atkins and Bernstein, but when you cross a line, you become Konstantin version of low carb community, and again I know you are not. I dont know you personally, but judging from you months I had a chance to follow your work and seing you on youtube along with your lovely wife, I have a feeling that you are a good man! I am usually a good judge of character! I have been with people in one capacity or another all my life. It is just my opinion, and few others, and you can totally ignore it off course. And I am saying it because I really care about you and your work. I trullybelieve you can turn people off by personal attacks, and you are a great voice in low carb community and these people need you. Ok, lol, I think enouph said, at least by me. By the way, how is Christine doing o her follow up visit?

THANKS again, Vadim! Christine is doing marginally better now since her 2nd round of chelation therapy, but we’re hopeful she’ll continue to improve.

Jimmy, another thing. You are wrong when you assume that ( in your own words) anyone who listens to Konstin will conclude that he is not all there. Obviously a lot of people didnt conclude that, otherwise you wouldnt have to respond to Toms and Joyce of the world. My best friend is a good defense lawyer, and I am too by association, so I have to point it out to you.

    Fair enough, Vadim. :)

Zbiggy I absolutely agree with you 100 percent! When Konstantin wrote a book in Russian why Dr Atkin is dead and you are still sick I absolutely let him know about it. I did call him on a local Russian radio staiton and tried to engage him in a debate but he told me he had no time for anyone like me on his show. I did contact him personally and we did discuss it, not to my satisfaction. But he did say he is willing to debate anyone on this subject. I had my reservations about his sincerity, but I cant question another men sicerety or not, I am not in his head. It just looked to me like it was a cheap shot to take and beliitel Dr Atkin memory by writing a book right after his passign. It just urked me and I do question Konstantin character a lot! But it doesnt mean I will call him name. Wether or not he has some legit merit or not, we need to hear from people like him. He has got a big voice in Russian community and trying to gain a voice in American community too. Thats why I believe it is important to hear him out to have an opinio about what he is doing. I for one do not take him seriously at all! And Jimmy I will agree with you, he doesnt desrve respect by attscking work and life journey of another human being in such demeaning work, But do you see my point that when we attack him, we become liewise!

I’m gonna go ahead and quote a fantastic blogger by the name of John Chow:

“I actually look forward to negative comments in my blog because it’s an indication of growth. This is a general rule to keep in mind: as your blog gets bigger, the number of negative comments increases. Therefore, don’t look at negative comments in a blog as a bad thing. It’s really a good thing – your blog is growing! Evil rule to remember: if you’re not pissing somebody off, you’re not doing it right.”

Congratulations on all of your success Jimmy… rock on brother!

    All the Best,

    Andrew R

THANKS Andrew! I must be REALLY successful at blogging, then. :D

    Wow…interesting comments…
I have to say, I found Konstantine to be quite boring and hard to understand. But I admire you for giving him a shot at an interview! :)

  • Angela

All I have to say is that I think you handled the interview very well. Mr. Monastyrsky commented that diabetes could make people very irritable, something that he went on to say that he experienced himself. When he began “overheating” about all the problems with Atkins book, I began to wonder if he might not have gotten his diabetes under control.
Again, all things considered, I think you handled it courteously.
    Keep up the good work!

THANKS Angela! Although I disagreed with what he was saying about Dr. Atkins, it was best to just let his words speak for themselves without stooping to his level. I appreciate your comments.
