NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: http://cmp.ly/3

In Episode 386 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from nutritionist Dr. Kaayla Daniel who promotes herself as “The Naughty Nutritionist” because she debunks many of the most common health myths that exist out there, including the claim that soy is a health food. She’s written a bestselling book on this subject called The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food to warn people about why eating soy-based foods is not the way to go. Listen to Dr. Daniel share about how she transitioned from a plant-based diet to an omnivorous eating plan thanks to the influence of The Weston A. Price Foundation, the growing new trend of high-fat nutrition education, why animal fat is so vilified, why a low-fat, high-carb diet is more about profit than health, the myths supporting vegetarianism and why they are so misguided and unhealthy, how a raw vegan is ruining their health, the influence of vegetarians like The China Study author Dr. T. Colin Campbell on the discussion regarding animal-based foods, the raw milk debate, why we should support the Farm-To-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, the curiously ironic story behind how she became involved with The Weston A. Price Foundation, how soy became considered a health food, the subtle way soy is being marketed now in light of the negative health consequences that have appeared in published studies, what foods containing soy are people completely unaware of, the response she’s received about The Whole Soy Story, what the deal is with her new moniker “The Naughty Nutritionist,” the infertility issues that are becoming more prominent, and the use of grain-based meats vs. plant-based foods. After listening to her speak about the health dangers associated with consuming soy, hopefully you’ll run for the hills when you see it in the foods you eat.

      THANKS Joe! Kaayla is amazing!

Thanks for this show, Jimmy! I don’t have time to listen yet, but I found out the hard way that ingesting soy can cause women horrendous breast pain! It look me years to figure it out, finally ran into a post googling about the problem: http://potentialandexpectations.wordpress.com/2008/02/02/soy-milk-is-evil/

Scroll down and see all the comments on that post. So many have been in pain for years w/o knowing it was soy, all along. Indeed, soy is evil. lol

Lemme know what you think of the episode when you’ve listened Ailu!

I’ve never been a vegetarian, but in my generation (I’m 67) it was the vegetarian movement and people like Ornish, Pritikan, MacDougall, etc who taught millions of us that refined carbs were bad for us. They didn’t lay it out as coherently as Gary Taubes has, but they said it over and over and we listened, and we left the supermarkets for the stores that sold unprocessed food. While in some ways those guys are your opponents, regarding your message about the damage done by refined carbs they are your forebears.

    • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

Peter, I would agree with you except I’ve interviewed Ornish twice and in my second interview he said that refined carbohydrates as long as they are cloaked in fiber are completely fine in your diet. Go back and listen to the interview because I asked him about his book The Spectrum where he has a scale of 1-5 about which foods are healthiest (5) and which are the least healthy (1). He puts meat and fat at the lower end while veggies and fruit are at the high end. But right smack dab in the middle at 3 are refined carbohydrates. I know what he and others have said, but read what they’re writing…it doesn’t match up!

Awesome topic, Jimmy! I think many low-carbers unfortunately make the mistake of taking in a lot of soy protein. Heck, most of the low carb bars and shakes out there have mostly soy protein in them! Ugh. Glad to hear the message is getting out there!

    • http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com Jimmy Moore

I consumed a lot more soy than I’d like to ever remember, Elizabeth. But not anymore. There are good companies realizing this and yanking the soy from their products.

    Jimmy,
Here are some quotes from Ornish’s writing:
“On The Spectrum plan, you can eat anything you want — to a degree. If you want to lose weight, LOWER BLOOD SUGAR, or prevent chronic diseases, you’ll need to choose more healthy foods and fewer less healthy ones.”

[Words in caps done by me]

“Foods are ranked from the healthiest (group 1), to the least healthy (group 5).”
    “Here are some examples:
Group 1: Fruits, fresh vegetables, WHOLE GRAINS, legumes, nonfat dairy, egg whites, soy products.”

Please tell me which of these the things above actually help you have a lower blood sugar?(besides the eggs and soy products, and even that’s not 100% given that some soy products is packaged with sugars)

    Fruit: higher blood sugar
Vegetables: pending the carb load it will spike blood sugar, perhaps not so much with green leafy varieties
    Whole grains: (http://www.thepaleogarden.com/2010/04/23/dr-bernstein-bread-is-like-sugar-on-the-tongue/)
Legumes: heck yes, blood sugar spiked
Nonfat dairy: yes, blood sugar spiked

So, Ornish offers a plan to LOWER BLOOD SUGAR but on his list of Group One foods, practically everything spikes blood sugar. I don’t get it.

That’s what we call a conundrum, my friend. And why low-fat, high-carb Ornish living makes no sense at all.
